- Thin Blade: When the crystal is added to a lightsaber, it produces a thin, fine blade for a more graceful and fluid wielding. The blade, from the addition of the crystal, turns a smoky grey color.
- Stranger Danger: When the crystal is added to a lightsaber, and the lightsaber is in the deactivated mode, it can alert the wielder who is attuned to the crystal of impending danger; however, it cannot pinpoint the exact location of the danger.
- Caustic Smoke: When added to the construction of a lightsaber, and the weapon becomes active, it creates a light smoke screen that when engaged, it causes bouts of nausea and disorientation in those engulfed in the smoke. However, the density of the effects depends on the species, equipment worn, and the enclosures.
- Blade: Because the blade is thin and easier to wield, it can make slashes and attacks more furious and efficient; with a touch of heightened speed.
- Fragility: The crystal, a natural form of a kyber crystal, is extremely fragile. The crystal can break or shatter from the smallest vibrations or kinetic attacks; thus, if used in a lightsbaer it must be housed securely.
- Dark Side of the Force: Like some crystals that require the attuned to be fully immersed in the Dark Side or pure of heart in the Light Side, this crystal requires the attuned to be devoted to the Dark Side of the Force. If the attuned strays too toward the Light Side, the crystal will be unconnected from the attuned permanently.
Deep in volcanic mountains on Yar Togna, there are several caverns hidden from the plain views of the galaxy where a particular kyber crystal, known by the locals as the Togna Crystal, is formed. Because of the sulfur-rich, poor oxygen atmospheric quality that engulfs the entire planet, it is a dangerous trek for both local and visitor to seek out these caverns; the latter requiring the proper equipment to make the journey. Most of the caverns are protected by the flowing lava that cascades down the side of those non-dormant volcanic mountains, as well as the sulfuric ash that is spewed upwards into the planet's atmosphere.
Prior to the occupation of the Galactic Empire during the Imperial Era, the locals would use the Tonga kyber crystal to power up deigned blasters and other unique weapons known to the planet's residence. With the arrival of the Imperials, and most notably a couple of Inquisitors, the caverns became known them; the latter sensing the crystals could be utilized for lightsabers, whilst the former began to ship them to be utilized for their superweapon; the DS-1 Death Star Mobile Battle Station. However, the use of the crystals, who brought unique attributes when infused with a lightsaber, by the Inquisitors were disallowed, for the sole purpose of the superweapon, though the Tonga kyber crystal now became cataloged by the Galactic Empire.
Very few of the Tonga crystals are used by the Sith or Dark Jedi, in spite the crystals have biased standing with the Force's darker nature. It could be that the treacherous path to obtain such a crystal is plagued with dangers, or the lack of breathable oxygen deters those from seeking the out, or perhaps it's the protective nature of the locals to keep the crystals here on Yar Tonga.
From the reports of the Inquisitors: Second Sister - 14 BBY
It is of my belief, even as I write this into the Imperial logs, that the Tonga kyber crystal, aptly named by the inhabits of the planet Yar Togna, does in fact possess qualities essential to the Empire, most notably to the Inquisitors. Through testing, we have discovered that the crystal is possessed by the nature of the Dark Side, as one previous test using a Jedi Padawan has proven, and that when aid crystal becomes attuned to an individual and subsequently added to the hilt of a lightsaber; the crystals present to unique traits.
The first of the trait, which in my opinion could save many an Inquisitor's life, is how it acts as an early warning detection system. When the weapon of a lightsaber is powered down, the crystal can warn its owner that impending danger is approaching; however, try as we did, it does not give accurate details where the danger is or what manner of danger is approaching. The second trait is that when the lightsaber weapon is powered up, the blade emits a light white smoke screen with a small radius that only emcopasses the weapons wielder. However, the smoke produces a caustic and naueasous, with bouts of disoreintation, in those unfortunate to be caught in the apex of the smoke-filled screen. It has been determined that this effect bears no ill intentions to the crystal's attuned wielder. Also, it should be duly noted that the crystal can and will disconnect itself from the one it is attuned to in the event the wilder in question returns or embraces the Light Side of the Force; this has been slightly proven.
With the latter mention of the retribution curse from the crystal's ability to disconnect, I will research this further. I've been called away to the planet Bracca where we have reports of a Jedi in hiding. I believe further tests and uses of this crystal is important, but both Lord Vader and the Empire believe otherwise.
