Sonic Servodriver

Intent: To amplify existing canonical tools which have an insufficient level of detail. To incorporate several canonical sonic technologies and extrapolate their possible combination. To provide a workable tool for an elite mechanic, technician or scientist. To provide a means of solving problems without military solutions, given sufficient creativity.
Development Thread: Feasible if requested.
Hero Unit: N/A
Manufacturer: Santhe/Sienar, upon personal request of Empress Ashin Varanin
Model: Custom Tool
Affiliation: Sith Empire and others (formerly, now open market)
Modularity: No
Production: Minor
Material: Duraplast, durasteel
Description: The sonic servodriver was inspired by the canonical drinks known as 'Sonic Screwdriver' and 'Sonic Servodriver'.

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Sonic_Servodriver

Furthermore, the canonical 'Sonic Wrench', while lacking detail, is implied to use sonic effects to create mechanical repair effects. http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Sonic_wrench The sonic servodriver is a natural exploration of this concept.

The sonic servodriver is capable of interacting with machinery and other electronics using a harmonic resonance of particle disturbance. It is a moderately universal tool, not a weapon. Its primary functions involve short-range scanning, short-range systems analysis and energy flow measurement, computer interaction and the opening of locks and doors. In emergencies it can also function as an impromptu transmitter.

While the sonic screwdriver was first created in the Doctor Who franchise, versions of it have since appeared in a wide variety of science fiction franchises, such as Iron Man, Red Dwarf, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Star Trek and World of Warcraft. As such, it is within the realm of 'generic' science fiction, and so product identity is not an issue. As will be shown, the concept is a reasonable extrapolation of established Star Wars canon.

Weaknesses:

Any thing or state that would impede the creating of a harmonic resonance, such as insulation or a chaotic system, will cause difficulties for the sonic servodriver.

The sonic servodriver's normal scanning range is relatively short, a matter of metres if not centimetres.

Some electronic locks are too heavily secured for the sonic servodriver.

Although some computer interface functions are possible with skilled use of the sonic servodriver, reprogramming and slicing are impossible. Some computer security systems can be bypassed in certain ways using the sonic servodriver.

The sonic servodriver requires significant skill and education on the part of its user.

In-Universe Rationale:

From sonic jammer technology, the sonic servodriver is capable of interfering with electronic systems. http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Sonic_jammer

From sonic shower technology, sonic technology can be capable of inducing vibratory states and resonance harmonics. These resonance harmonics are, canonically, sufficient to separate dissimilar materials. http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Sonic_shower

From standard solid weapon technology, sonic technology can be capable of directing very small amounts of physical movement, as with electronic switches, using sonic waves. http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Sonic_weapon

From sonic dissipator and sonic nullifier technology, sonic technology can be capable of active response and cancellation of powerful sounds. The relevant portion of the technology is its ability to recognize and respond to vibrations, harmonics and noises. http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Sonic_damper
http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Sonic_nullifiers

From sonic probe technology, sonic technology can be capable of scanning functions.

From sonic wrench technology, sonic technology can be capable of mechanical repair functions.

I have no problem with anyone using this, so long as they somehow arrive at it through RP with someone who has one or who is involved in production. Between the limited production run and Sith having very few friends, it wouldn't be able to be the newest toy that everyone's gotta have, but if someone really wanted it, they could probably find a way. That's my thinking right now.

Well your rationale is solid, and it doesn't look like you'll do anything weird with it. My only thought though is if it's fleshing out a piece of canon tech that doesn't have much in the way of a description, what makes this unique Sith Empire tech, as opposed to everyone tech?

Honestly? It struck me as expensive and specialized, and the only character I have with access to any real tech resources (and who would want it made) is Ashin. That's why I had the SE make it. It's not me trying to keep it to myself, it's me trying to keep some sort of a natural limit on dissemination so everyone and their dog didn't just grab it because it's new and cool. Figured running it that way might make it marginally more likely to get approved. Ultimately, I have no problem with it being available to everyone. If that's the sticking point, I'll make it go away.
