The Spitfire

DESCRIPTION
In the aftermath of the Incursion Crisis, Enyo Typhos was able to escape from Tartarus with some treasures of the insane Shards. One of those treasures was a case of the rare metal Orichalcum which could be processed into an item for her use.
After several proposals, Enyo settled on a radical design. Orichalcum was lightsabre resistant, great at absorbing heat but also very conductive. These properties would make a good sword, armour or shield, but it could also make a very powerful ranged weapon casing. Originally Enyo wanted to use it for a maul, since its weight and toughness would make it ideal for bashing opponents. However, the metal's kinetic resistance was in the cyborg's opinion too low to make it practical enough in a kinetic dependent role.
Enyo decided to make a minigun, and what was better than that? A hybrid railgun-minigun! By making the casing from Orichalcum the weapon was resistant to lightsabres and could ignore the massive heat buildup these weapons caused. Its conductive effects could also assist in the projecting of bolts using electromagnetic pulses down the barrel. The result was a monstrous weapon only a HRD could lift, but which could also be vehicle mounted. As a hybrid the newly named Spitfire had some advantages and compromises from both sides. For one it did not have quite the insane rate of fire of a traditional minigun, but still thousands of round a minute. Because of the rapid fire it also lacked the penetration of a true railgun’s slugs.
Regardless, the Spitfire can unleash a veritable hail of fire which can cut through infantry, light vehicles, regular buildings and Force users who cannot evade or create powerful Force shields. Being propelled at hypersonic speed, these rounds are extremely difficult to dodge and can inflict grievous injuries upon a target. It does lack against fortifications and heavy vehicle/walker armour though.
The Spitfire is also extremely heavy, and ammunition can be an issue in longer battles. Furthermore, it has a significant recoil, even for an HRD. All up though it is a fearsome weapon and downright murderous against infantry.
OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
- Intent: To make use of the Silver Incursion reward. This is a new and creative usage of the material, but not overly powerful.
- Image Source: Here. Photograph from a store selling a real minigun!
- Canon Link: N/A
- Restricted Missions: Incursion Event reward.
- Primary Source: Written by [member="Valiens Nantaris"]
- Manufacturer: Enyo Typhos with (unwitting) help from the Contingency.
- Model: N/A
- Affiliation: Enyo Typhos only.
- Modularity: No
- Production: Unique
- Material: Orichalcum (barrel, casing), durasteel (workings, handles, misc), alusteel (targeting sights, misc).
- Classification: Minigun
- Size: Double handed range weapon, vehicle mounted.
- Length: 1m long
- Weight: 60kg (including ammunition etc)
- Ammunition Type: Metallic bolts. Power pack.
- Ammunition Capacity: Belt ammunition. Usually carries 1 minute of constant firing on foot, up to 10 minutes when mounted. Power pack must be changed after 5 minutes of use.
- Effective Range: Battlefield.
- Rate of Fire: Fully automatic
- Fully automatic rail-minigun.
- Fires 1cm bolts at hypersonic speeds.
- Weapon is lightsabre resistant and naturally very heat and cold resistant.
- Requires powerpacks as well as regular ammunition.
- Storm. The Spitfire can unleash a veritable hailstorm of fire, several thousand rounds per minute. Anything caught in the way risks being shredded. Where one bolt might not penetrate, a hundred might!
- Penetration. The bolts are accelerated by the internal rail assembly so they hit extremely hard and fast, allowing them to pierce most personal and light vehicle armour.
- Automatic. The Spitfire is fully automatic, but it can be set with a burst limiter. This will allow the gun to fire in 3-5 second bursts. Usually it’s on fully automatic though.
- Resistant. The weapon itself is more resilient than a regular weapon. It is almost immune to lightsabres and personal blasters, whilst the heat absorption prevents heavy use of the weapon overheating and cracking the casing. Though unlikely to come up, it is also resistant to cold either environmental or caused by weapons like Cryoban.
- Carnage. The Spitfire can target a variety of enemies. It is of course devastating to infantry, but also light vehicles, ideal for suppression fire and against Force users.
- Weight. The Spitfire, including everything, is massively heavy, partly because of the Orichalcum, but also because of the ammo, drive units and more. Even Enyo with her superhuman strength cannot hold it indefinitely or aim it at moving targets swiftly.
- Ion. The Spitfire, especially as it’s made of Orichalcum, is vulnerable to ion or electrical attacks. A powerful enough blast with freeze the weapon up and prevent it being fired for the rest of the battle.
- Ammunition. Ammunition runs out, and especially with something which fires so fast, a long battle will see ammo become a problem.
- Hybrid. The Spitfire is neither a railgun nor a full minigun. Thus it lacks the excessive RPM of the latter and the penetration of the former. It is still a potent combination however.
- Armour. Heavy vehicle armour such as battle tanks and walkers is largely proof from the Spitfire, along with heavy reinforced defences and walls.
- Recoil: Launching a 1 cm projectile at a minimum of 3 k/s makes recoil a significant issue. This is not too difficult when firing from a fixed position provided it is sturdy, but firing from the hip is a terribly bad idea except in short bursts.
