Star Wars Episode VIII

Yes, that 3rd I is meant to be in the title.

After seeing VII twice thus far, I am a little concerned about the next movie. The director for the next film is Rian Johnson, the director that worked on Looper and some Breaking Bad episodes. Why am I worried? Rian does not have a very large record when it comes to directing, not to mention I was not a huge fan of Looper.

I am actually quite confused why Disney chose Rian to write/direct the next Star Wars film. It seems honestly very oddball to me to choose such a 'new' director. I used to not worry about directors when it came to films, until I recently saw the trailer for the new Star Trek, which honestly looks like 2 Star 2 Trek (due to it being directed by Justin Lin, the director of 3 Fast and Furious films.)

Am I alone in this thought?

While I do have reservations about the director, I am not too worried. Here is why:
1) Disney is involved. Hate 'em all you want Disney knows what they are doing.
2) Kathleen Kennedy is still President of LucasFilms. She clearly gets Star Wars. Her oversight is sufficient for me.
3) J.J. Abrams is still somewhat involved in the project, and this guys gets Star Wars like no other.
4) The guy, from a thing I watched at Star Wars Launch Bay, loves Star Wars. I truly believe a love for Star Wars is necessary in making the movies faithful to the franchise. He won't be trying to do his own thing, he will be trying to emulate what Star Wars is.

Honestly, I'm far more worried about Rogue One, which is going to be soooo unsatisfying given my desire for VIII right now.

Random predictions:
  • There's a timeskip rather than starting the movie immediately after VII.
  • During that time, Rey and Kylo would have gone through training. Kylo finishes his. For muh parallels, Rey leaves her training early believing Finn to be in trouble.
  • Rey's family reveal will either be at the end of the movie or in Episode IX. I'm leaning toward her being Luke's daughter and was kept a secret from even Leia and Han. Or even Snoke since there's something weird with her growth in the Force when compared to Luke.
  • Rey and Kylo duel once again, but being ahead in his training as well as uninjured allows for Kylo to take victory (and Rey's hand).
  • Captain Phasma survives Episode VII and actually does something - serving as Finn's personal antagonist and besting him this movie.
  • Hux serves as Poe's personal antagonist and bests him in the space battle or whatever.
  • Luke is this film's sacrificial lion. Snoke is the killer.
