Star Wars Rebels: Ezras's Lightsaber/Gun?

Emberlene's Daughter, The Jedi Generalist
I didn't know about it at first, seemed kind of meh but thinking about it a traditional lightsaber would have been dangerous for him to have.. plus he isn't like Ahsoka who has the formal training for constructing one. His master made one that for a time was in two pieces. See if any new saber designed get created

The weapon of a Jedi, in the words of Obi-Wan Kenobi, is 'the weapon of a Jedi Knight. Not as clumsy or random as a blaster. A more elegant weapon for a more civilized age".
As much as Disney want to create new lightsabers, I disagree with mixing a blaster and a saber. Of course the above quote may only be Obi-Wan's opinion, but it's said for a reason.
So yeah, I don't really like it.

Inquisitor lightsaber all the way though.

At the time Obi Wan said it, there were all sorts of strict standards a Jedi was held to, which all dissipated during Luke's regime. Also, the very title itself is "Rebels" and the main protagonist's aura very naturally and inevitably emanates that feel of grit and improvisation. For that reason, I can entirely agree with, from a logical perspective, the whole thrown together blaster hilt concept.

Yes, Obi-Wan commented on the traditional lightsaber being elegant. However, it is not an elegant era that Ezra was in. He wasn't taught traditionally, with the jedi robes and padawan braids. Ezra was a street rat and a rebel, making a non-traditional lightsaber. Further more, lightsabers were illegal in his age, so he added the blaster option to cover it up and use the same weapon - but still fool anyone into thinking it was just any other blaster, not a lightsaber, and keeping him and his team safe another day. with accommodations that fit with the situations he and the jedi were in, was unavoidable, had multiple advantages, and was was pretty cool!

Most Jedi, including Obi-Wan (who didn't have very nice things to say about blasters or people who wielded them) would hate Ezra's lightsaber. They would look at it as a crude, unrefined and sloppy mess that totally goes against the Jedi way.

They would be right.

It looks tacky and ugly, and the blaster component would be completely unnecessary for a fully trained Jedi. The crossguard would also be completely pointless in duels. But that being said, it seems to fit the character of Ezra himself. He's not a fully trained Jedi, and the blaster component is meant to compensate for his weaknesses in that regard. So I guess it works, from that perspective. It's a lightsaber with training wheels.

Blaster

- Great range
- Stun capability available
- Can have massive rate of fire
- Can't cut stuff open

Lightsaber

- Range of the blade and your arm.
- No stun, but you can turn down the power and beat folks with it.
- How fast can you swing?
- Can cut through nearly anything.

Put them together and you have all the pros and none of the cons. Why aren't we sticking these lightsaber things on the end of blaster rifles like bayonets anyways?

Tried that when I first came to the site. Answer I got was, " cus we don't need bayonets, and lightsaberaxes and lightsaber katanas."

Don't let folks tell you what to do. Unless its the admins or RPJ's. Break the mold @Windstrider. If Lightsaber whips are possible you can make any weapon using the same principle a Chaos reality. All you need is a dev thread and an idea!

Not really. All of the pros of having a blaster can be accomplished even more effectively if you're a good enough swordsman. You have range with the ability to deflect blaster bolts back at the attacker, stun capabilities are unnecessary if you're skilled enough to disarm or otherwise incapacitate your opponent without killing them. Plus, you don't have the drawback of having to switch between blaster/lightsaber mode constantly. Ezra's lightsaber can't do both at the same time.

I think the movies make it pretty clear that a lightsaber, in the hands of a highly trained master, generally outclasses a blaster. The wookieepedia page for Ezra's lightsaber states that he included the blaster option not because it was inherently a better design but because he wasn't a good enough swordsman and needed the fallback option.
