  • [SIZE=9pt]The static torpedo’s data-purge charge is an upscaled version of ancient data-purge grenades. Unlike a mag-pulse torpedo, ion cannon, or brute-force electromagnetic pulse, the static torpedo’s unique technology does not overwhelm and disable all systems it strikes. It’s an elegant weapon for a more civilized age. If subjected to a barrage of static torpedoes, an unshielded, lightly-armored, and/or hull-breached vessel might find crucial computer systems completely wiped of data - navicomputers or targeting computers, for example. A more durable ship with its shields intact might find certain surface systems glitching, rebooting, or losing short-term memory. (The extent of the interference is, of course, entirely up to the defender, inversely proportional to shield strength, proportional to number of warheads, etc.)[/SIZE]

[SIZE=9pt]Imagine you attack a wealthy, rational, pacifist world, not just once but over and over. Imagine that world had exclusive access to top-flight starship engineering technologies and a galaxy-class shipyard. Imagine, furthermore, that the world in question was ready to hit back conclusively, without abrogating its principles. The world in question -- let’s call it Naboo -- might design and deploy something like the static torpedo.[/SIZE]

[SIZE=9pt]Rather than burn, wreck, melt, and perforate their enemies, Naboo might decide to attenuate or eliminate their ability to do harm, as quickly and safely as possible. A squadron of Naboo starfighters fires static torpedos, and a pirate ship loses its navigational data -- or the operating system for its hyperdrive. A Naboo flotilla deploys static torpedos, and suddenly an enemy fleet finds itself struggling to shoot down a desperate starfighter assault.[/SIZE]

[SIZE=9pt]There are downsides, of course. Malfunctioning or erased starship mainframes don’t yield much in the way of useful intelligence. Without a visible explosion, it can be difficult for fire control officers or nearby pilots to gauge where static torpedos are detonating. Overall, however, the static torpedo is a powerful less-lethal option for flummoxing and foiling attackers in a conclusive way.[/SIZE]
