- Three firing modes
- Extremely durable and reliable in harsh environmental conditions.
- Offers three firing modes:
- Standard — grappling line remains connected to the device.
- Detached — grappling line can detach from the device and remain wrapped around the target, allowing the user to engage someone else.
- Bolas — grappling line can be thrown as a spinning bolas to entangle a target's body or legs, allowing the user to engage someone else.
- Up to three grappling lines (from the same mode or different modes) can be active at any one time.
- Can be worn as a standalone bracer or integrated into armor.
- Any connected (standard mode) grappling line can be detached as needed.
- Extremely large ammunition capacity for a grappling line launcher.
- Field-clad high-traction grappling lines cannot be damaged by lightsabers, vibroblades, fire, etc.
- Does not deal any significant damage.
- High visibility.
- Requires good judgment, and some modes can interfere with others (e.g. good luck throwing a fast, accurate bolas with the third mode while trying to control someone's movements with the first mode).
- Detached grappling lines (modes two and three) only remain active for five minutes after detachment from the device.
- As with any grappling line, the first mode puts the user in direct physical opposition to the target. The risk of getting jolted or dragged around increases massively if the wearer snares two or three targets with grappling lines simultaneously using the first mode.
- Once the whipcord's protective field deactivates, it's just synthetic rope, highly vulnerable to cutting or burning.
Bard Independent was a high-end small-batch Mandalorian workshop based on Eshan, founded circa 850 ABY. While the workshop's glory days of aggressive anti-Sith devices are long gone, the discerning collector can still acquire some of Bard Independent's rare work. One of those items is the Steel Hydra Wristgrappler, an evolution of classic grappling line technology.
The Steel Hydra can control and/or cast up to three grappling lines at a time, attached and/or detached from the device. While combat grappling is the primary purpose of the device, a skilled wearer could use it for climbing, garrotting, hanging, whipping, or swinging through the trees.
