Description: The Stormfire-class Assault Frigate is an update of an ancient Old Republic vessel used during the Alaskan Conflicts thousands of years ago. The result is a very spartan but durable assault frigate design capable of dealing and soaking up large amounts of damage augmented by the best modern technology of Lucerne Labs.

The Stormfire utilizes a heavily constructed frame of ferrocarbon, normally used to construct skyscrapers, to form a very structurally durable frame without further depleting stocks of strategic metals used in other designs. Many of the Stormfire's awkward internal architectual features (such as A-shaped frame hallways and frequent heavy blastdoors) are because the ancient design uses a lot more framing to ensure that the starship could handle intense projectile fire and still hold up well to the stresses of combat maneuvers. This durable frame is then plated with thick slabs of quadranium steel on most areas of the ship. Lastly, the ship's viewports are made out of transparisteel, though often quadranium steel blastscreens frequently cover the viewports (as per the ancient design) to better protect the craft's occupants. The hull itself is then protected by two sets of identical shield generators and their projectors, with one set always acting as a reserve back-up if the first is destroyed, damaged, or otherwise offline.

The ship itself retains much of its original layout with a few updates as technology has progressed. While Lucerne Labs has provided much of the weaponry, most modern components are commercial off the shelf products (such as hyperdrives, engines, etc) as Lucerne Labs has little to no experience in those areas. Instead, Lucerne Labs has concentrated their improvements on direct combat systems and command. Unlike many modern vessels, the Stormfire has a normal bridge near the front for better observation., placed near the front like the Rendili dreadnaught, and a combat bridge complete with full-scale holotank is buried deep in the ship behind multiple blast doors. In order to get to the combat bridge quickly, there is a turbolift that can quickly shuttles crewmembers back and forth. The ancient design also operated with three nuclear reactors, which have now been replaced with three small solar ionization reactors. Like the original design, the Stormfire has a small ventral bay that houses support craft used for planetary missions. Because the Stormfire has heavy anti-ship armament but weak anti-fighter defenses, Stormfire is typically escorted by other vessels with ample anti-starfighter and anti-missile weaponry.

The Stormfire's primary weaponry consists of three diversified weapons sets to grant the frigate flexibility in attacking its foes. The main battery consists of six Rhongomyniad-class Mass Driver Batteries, with two batteries on the port, starboard, and front sides of the vessel. While these weapons are typically equivalent to standard turbolaser batteries in terms of normal power, they also have an unusual flexibility in terms of range and ammunition choices, which in turn is offset by having to devote more space to storage for ammunition (and consequently less troops and starships in the Stormfire's case). The next set of weaponry are a series of capital-scale ion cannon batteries, also placed in a similar arrangement to the mass driver cannon's, albeit there is only one battery facing the front. For missile weapons, the Stormfire carries a set of ten Carwennan-class Missile Launchers, arranged in two clusters somewhat recessed in the bow's armor for better protection. When these weapons are not used against to intercept larger small craft, they are frequently used to attack targets of opportunity on other capital ships. Finally, the Stormfire has a well laid out, if somewhat low-powered, web of defensive autoblasters and Quad Laser Cannons designed primarily to prevent enemy warheads from hitting the ship, but they also serve to deter normal starfighter strafing runs.

This armament combined with its durability makes the Stormfire an formidable opponent for its size, but the starship is also fairly slow compared to many frigates and lacks starfighter carrying capacity, almost ensuring that it used primarily in an anti-capital ship or assault role. Because of these setbacks, the Stormfire is typically accompanied by other ships to make up for these deficits.

A clever design, but there are some things we need to work out.

A problem that comes up first is the spaced armor employed on the ship. While the tactic would work as projected with small arms fire, there must still be connections to support the outer hull layer during ship operations or else the thin outer hull could fly apart. As well, there must be connected to protect the hull with shield projectors, and weapon emplacements will similarly bridge the two hulls. Ion energy radiates outward from the point of impact and would quickly find these areas. Since it would be naturally funneled in while following its natural tendencies, this could actually increase the effectiveness of ion weaponry. I do not believe this would reasonable afford the ship any noteworthy protect against capital ship weapons, not without the development of some manner of ion negation shielding for the hull connections.

So you could do a dev thread, 20~ posts, and develop that technology or you could change up the sub and remove the spaced armor and put in place some other defense measure.

I guess I hadn't really thought that point in regards to the ion weaponry. How would you feel if I removed all references to the spaced armor working against ion and EMP weaponry, and only referred to it lessening the effects of missile weaponry, as in the same way it works against shells/warheads in real life against the side skirt armor of tanks?

I've completely removed the spaced armor thing; I think that at one point, I'm going to make a thread developing that armor as a separate submission sometime after I do a development thread. Thanks for your time and feedback.
