Intent: To create a strategic planning and three dimensional mapping center for use by fleet commanders.
Development Thread: N/A
Manufacturer: Ignus Industries
Model: Strategic Orrery Center (SOC)
Affiliation: Ignus Industries approved Contract Holders
Modularity: No
Production: Limited
Material: Holoprojector parts, aluminum, transparisteel

Strengths:
  • Creates a three dimensional environment for strategic fleet planning and direction
  • Allows the fleet commander to visualize all avenues rather than a single plane of space existence
Weaknesses:
  • It is susceptible to ion weaponry and electrical bursts shutting it down, just the same as most ships are.
  • Only as good as the person using it. It's just a 3D map.
  • Extremely costly as holoprojectors of this magnitude are not cheap.
  • The ship must be designed to include it. Not a late addition add-on.

Description: One of the common problems that fleet commanders face is only being able to see what's out their viewport, or what's on a two-dimensional map. However, scanner data accumulated by ships is capable of providing three dimensional information on a star system. So why do admirals and commanders rely on only what they can see or a 2D map? The simple answer is that a 3D projection system is not standard on most ships, costs a lot, and most ship manufacturers are not knowledgeable enough in the manufacturer or installation of such systems. Plus they tend to be installed within the confines of the bridge, which just creates a visual obstruction for the crew.

Enter the SOC. Rather than being installed on the bridge, it is its own module that is usually designed to be installed next to the bridge. As such, it can't be installed on existing vessels, but must be designed into the ships infrastructure from the very beginning. It's expensive and not shielded against ion and energy attacks that target electronics. And of course it does not improve the skills of a commander on the field. It just provides a better tactical vision for that commander.

It is literally just a 3D map room.
