Suggestions/Advice...SJO

Hello all!

I posted a general question to the entire board here: http://starwarsrp.net/topic/101489-suggestionsadvice/, but I'd like a bit more specific advice when it comes to the SJO.

I am working on Ery's backstory, and am very much thinking she comes from a former Silver Jedi Master. I'd love to see this be her reason to seek out the SJO and even have her hunting for his old lightsaber. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice on how to do this successfully? Ultimately, I don't want to do anything that would be stupid, embarrassing, or just downright dumb when it comes to RPing on here. I'm trying to hop back on the bicycle after YEARS of not RPing and am feeling very inadequate.

I've perused the boards a bit (it's been SUPER busy at work this week) but not to the extent that I'd like. Are there any resources or guides already created that I should look into before beginning on this journey?

I just want to be the best RP partner I can and not to make a fool of myself.

Thank you for your time!

When you say "comes from a former Silver Master Jedi", do you mean that Ery is the child of that master?

If so, that would be easy to do if you write a nice back story for it. We have had (still do if she is about) a Togruta Master in the form of [member="Sochi Ru"] so there could easily be more Togruta's in the Order now and in the past.

I was leaning towards her father having been a Jedi master and having left the order to raise a family, gets drawn back in, and then...well, it's not a pretty ending for him or his family. It's good to know that there are and have been Togruta masters to back this up. Thank you!

My approach (I won't say advice as I think we all approach things differently, so all I can say is what I do) is to start with an end character in mind.

Often that's a Jedi from the books or even the movies. Sometimes it's a character from another genre. That gives me a feeling for their personality. Sometimes I blend two characters. Then I read up on that character and see where I like their back-story and then amend it to suit the character I have in my head.

But to be fair, it can take me a couple of hundred posts before I really feel in the skin of a character and know what they'll say or do in any given situation. Which is why I like a strong back-story that allows me to default to some basic information that explains motives, behaviours, personality etc.

Sorel is loosely based on Luminara Unduli. Perth Levov is loosely Darth Zannah and Darth Revan. Elmont Block is quite close to a young Qui Gon Jinn. For some their back stories are very similar. For others I crafted a brand new back story but relied on personality to fill in the blanks. For Sorel, it is her race that gave me much of her background - and the same for Perth.

Oddly, as I write this, I notice it is the two characters I conjured from thin air that I write the least. Perhaps because I have the least understanding of who they are?

But that's just me.

The one boon I have in regards to character creation is that both this and my other character are recreations of characters I used in WoW, DnD, and a generic fantasy forum. For Ery here, I'm rolling her back to her basic character from WoW since quite a few storylines took her in some interesting directions that might not fit this universe.

My other character is picking up from sort of a middle point, she's been developed some, but is not at the point she was in the other realms.

It feels a bit like cheating using them, but I loved using them in the past and feel like I have a strong connection with those characters. Right now the struggle is just adapting them to this universe.

I know what you mean about it taking 100 posts to understand how the character would react...it's the journey that makes RPing so much fun and one never knows where it's going to go.

Thank you so much for your input! I greatly appreciate it.

This is very very difficult, for two reasons neither of which are this isn't a good idea or interesting. Mostly because the silver jedi surprisingly have not had a lot of male masters that aren't human or humanoid (no male togruta that I can think of) but we could also develop them as an npc that was around or joined and left to raise a family after Iella died (the original grandmaster)

No it is not cheating using characters from elsewhere you have RPed with. This character of mine is not new to me although I RPed Coci in the Star Wars 'verse before. However, she was a NFU and ended up being very high ranking in several factions including the Galactic Alliance.

I started Coci again here, completely from scratch and wanted to try her as a Jedi and have loved every minute of it. I like this Coci better. Although the other one was pretty awesome .. even if I do say so myself. :p

That's exactly the kind of thing I needed to know! So now I will consider either changing her parentage to her mother having been to Jedi and her father being a NFU, or to developing her father as an NPC. THanks!

I figured I wasn't the only one but part of me felt a little subpar by resulting to using a "pre-made" character so to speak. So glad to hear that you have enjoyed creating a new version of Coci! Hopefully I have the same experience with these mew versions of Ery and Meyrit. <3
