Sullustan Pioneers are the Home Guard's Corps of Engineers, trained sappers and field technicians. A cave dwelling species of thriving industrialists the natives of Sullust are both talented diggers and builders. They are defensive minded creatures who excel in constructing elaborate tunnel networks and sturdy fortifications. Pioneers have a keen sense for tracking and navigation. Their wilderness survival skills are far more developed than the average infantry trooper. They are well suited for guerilla and partisan operations and have been a valuable ally of rebel forces in the past.
While they are highly adaptable soldiers their work requires that they remain lightly armed and protected so they can haul all their excess gear into and out of frontline combat. Despite their training and education being a Pioneer is an extremely dangerous assignment with all kinds of unpredictable battlefield and construction hazards that can permanently end a sapper's career through no fault of their own. Although they take precautions to mask heat signatures and dampen the sound of their work, a Pioneer's worst enemy remains the common lifeform scanner pinging at just the wrong moment.
