[SUMMARY IN PROGRESS] A few questions before I begin...

In an effort for us to better organize missions and threads as a faction where we can include as many of us as possible I wanted to take some time to ask you a few questions. They mostly focus on your experiences with the different kinds of characters we have available on the site.

Since the only character I have ‘successfully’ written so far is a Jedi I find it hard to put myself in the shoes of a senator or soldier because it feels like a whole other world to me. So the point of this thread in particular is that I would like people to answer a few questions so that I – and others interested in writing stories about the Republic – have more information to go off of when coming up with scenarios to involve the Republic as a whole.

So before I get to writing the mission(s?) I will do what I learned in school and define who the 'users' are. That means you, so to optimize the things I write to you I want to ask you a few questions.

Right now the questions I have are:

1. What kind of threads do you as a Senator/Soldier/Jedi enjoy the most?
2. What kind of threads do you NOT enjoy? (Optional but still good to ask)
3. During threads do you prefer objectives that are elaborate or open for interpretation?
4. Do you prefer to have objectives be several small ones or a few big ones?
5. What is your opinion on limits? Should there be limits as to how many can join?
6. Are you in the greatest faction on the board, and why is ‘Yes’ the only applicable answer?

Oh and, if you feel like a question is left unasked or unanswered then please tell me and I will add it! Thank you in advance!

EDIT:

If you feel that you want to remain anonymous then feel free to PM me!

Very good questions and I will toss up my answer for all of my characters in just one post if that is cool.

1. What kind of threads do you as a Senator/Soldier/Jedi enjoy the most?

Senators: Thread types are really not to action packed but tend to be drawn out one. In things such as of course Senate Hearings on bill, bill revisions, declarations of war, peace agreements. You name it. Add to that list threads like meet and greet social parties types of things to strengthen existing contacts plus build new ones.

Soldiers/Pilots: The truly simplest of them all. Combat and Parties. The old adage work hard and play harder. Training threads(may just be me), dominions, skirmishes, invasions the works. Add to the group the get drunk and tell war stories threads are also good.

Jedi: This group is a little more complicated dealing with the nature of the force and trying not to step on peoples toes. There really is no thread that a Jedi can't be successful in. You just have to keep in mind of not making the Senator look bad in front of his/her friends and not telling the Soldier/Pilot how to do the one things he has been doing his whole life and in the case of all padawans and most Knights longer than said Jedi has been alive.

2. What kind of threads do you NOT enjoy? (Optional but still good to ask)

lol see question 1.

3. During threads do you prefer objectives that are elaborate or open for interpretation?

Senators: The best Senator threads are ones that bring you together for a common goal for example a bill submission and vote but are other than that open for interpretation. This is many because every Senator comes from a different background.

Soldiers/Pilots: These tend to be better worked out in a more suitable manner of providing pretty clear objectives and how they are accomplsihed. Think of a race horse in a harness kind of thing.

Jedi: Depends on the thread and the jedi has some are willing to do A while others would find doing A reprehensible. maybe have objectives but leave how to accomplish them open to interpretation.

4. Do you prefer to have objectives be several small ones or a few big ones?

Universally in threads having a series of smaller objectives is better in terms of tracking progress.

5. What is your opinion on limits? Should there be limits as to how many can join?

A thread should only have as many participants as it takes to complete the intend purpose of the thread plus or minus three participants. That way everyone feels like they have a purpose, are making an impact, and are not just fluff in the background. That goes into the planning stage of the thread ironing out how many people would it legitimately take to complete the desired outcome.

6. Are you in the greatest faction on the board, and why is ‘Yes’ the only applicable answer?

Which character are we talking about now? :p

I think Torill's pretty much spot on for the general classes, but I want to add some things about being a naval officer specifically to his comments.

1. Being a naval officer is sort of being a mix between a politician and a pilot. You need broad ideas and people skills (like a politician) but you need to able to think about and implement tactics (like a pilot). The key difference then between a typical soldier/pilot and a naval officer is less of an emphasis on the physical but more of the intellectual. In other words, while the occasional straight out bludgeoning of an opponent by brute force is enjoyably cathartic, tasks that require intellectual maneuvering and critical thinking are more enjoyable.

2. Threads that I do not enjoy.

Provide transport to a bunch of rowdy padawans running on Stimcaf highs to Ossus. ;)

But seriously, I don't think that most naval officers want to play backdrop to other storylines. They may need realistically to provide transport for other groups, but more interesting missions for naval officers include an aspect that requires more presence than their ship making a straight milk-run from point A to point B.

3. Depending on the rank of the officer, you may want more fuzzy objectives (typical with higher ranks and more people managing skills, like an admiral) or very clear ones (for a low-ranking officer commanding a single ship trying to accomplish a clear objective as dictated by one of his superiors).

Personally I like explicit objectives, but flexibility in how I can accomplish them. For example, some enemy warships need to be removed so that an army transport fleet can move through. I could either outright destroy them, lead them off an a merry goose chase, hijack/capture one with the aid of a jedi or commando of some sort, etc.

4. This is situational for me, dependent on the thread and the people involved. Some people it almost seems like you have to cajole to get anything done (they work better with big open objectives in my experience), whereas a small group of hyperactively productive people probably work best doing a bunch of small objectives.

5. In terms of RPers involved, limits don't bother me. As a naval officer, ridiculous and copious amounts of ships something getting involved in a battle over a common, remote, dirt-poor world irritates me. On the other hand, fighting over a faction's populous capital with four corvettes on each side is also ridiculous to me. This ties more to realism than me than anything else.

6. I can't speak for a faction as a whole, but I'm really trying to make the Fleet one of the best at Chaos. But in my opinion, that requires more Tech and IC development first before we get there.

Jsc

Disney's Princess
1. Senator: Dramas. Soldier: Explosions. Jedi: Hogwarts.
2. This month, erm... dating threads.
3. I prefer a good solid flow were every writer feels comfortable leading.
4. n/a
5. I keep my own schedule. I'm a big boy now.
6. Because Kana is sexy.

1. What kind of threads do you as a Senator/Soldier/Jedi enjoy the most?
  • The kind without violence. Really. Typically soldiers and warriors are always fighting, standing strong against evil and tyranny, but that's not their true self. The truest version of a warrior is when he's getting ready for bed and he lays awake at night and contemplates the things he's done, the people he had to kill, and the mistakes he's made that cost others their lives. Peaceful and otherwise goofy threads make me smile more than battle ones.
2. What kind of threads do you NOT enjoy? (Optional but still good to ask)
  • Development threads. I know they're necessary, but I feel as if they lose an aspect of the story when people are just working hard enough to get what they want before dropping the thread completely.
3. During threads do you prefer objectives that are elaborate or open for interpretation?
  • Open for interpretation. In real-life military situations, operators and soldiers alike merely get the broad objective and mission parameters. Say John Doe is told "Eliminate all hostiles and secure the area," which is a simple and common mission set. It allows John and his allies to determine the best way to complete their objective without worrying about other things and ultimately preserving life whilst doing so.
4. Do you prefer to have objectives be several small ones or a few big ones?
  • Small ones. I'll give you an example. If there is a base on flatland and there's incoming soldiers and tanks that are trying to conquer it, those are bigger and more "important" objectives. But let's say there's a jamming station nearby that if the attacking forces destroy it, they'll be able to call in air support. Little things matter in war, every detail counts.
5. What is your opinion on limits? Should there be limits as to how many can join?
  • Nope. Just keep it reasonable.
6. Are you in the greatest faction on the board, and why is ‘Yes’ the only applicable answer?
  • To me, all factions are perfect because there's nothing you can compare them to so it's all relative. Asking which faction is better than the other is like asking whether someone's relationship with their girlfriend is better than someone else's

1. Smaller groups but any type of subject – as long as there’s a chance to RP. And, if I’m honest, relatively fast-paced. As a Jedi for me at least, it's not all about combat and if invited to any other threads, I'd gladly participate.

2. Ones that don’t complete. I find this really frustrating.

3. No preference. I can work with both but like variety.

4. No preference. As above, I prefer to mix it up.

5. No limits as long as it doesn’t affect either the pace of the thread or the likelihood of it completing

6. Yes

1. What kind of threads do you as a Senator/Soldier/Jedi enjoy the most?

Anything I can get my hands on, providing I can make sense of my character(s) being there. Really what I like the most is if there's a really good story woven into the thread, which can happen in any kind of thread!

Yes, even training threads.

2. What kind of threads do you NOT enjoy? (Optional but still good to ask)

Random cantina threads, whose sole purposes are drinking and socializing with a random stranger, just because they want a thread with your character. I'm not fond of this as a basis for establishing rapport, usually, either.

3. During threads do you prefer objectives that are elaborate or open for interpretation?

Either or. I can work with both. :)

4. Do you prefer to have objectives be several small ones or a few big ones?

Again, no preference.

5. What is your opinion on limits? Should there be limits as to how many can join?

I've been at this long enough to know that the likelihood of a thread stalling out and/or dying increases exponentially with the number of people involved in a thread, but it's also true that such a thing doesn't happen in 100% of cases. I don't think there should be limits on the threads, but rather that people should be aware of their own limitations, for the sake of others, and so they don't burn out.

And yes, I should probably take my own advice there, sometimes. <_<

6. Are you in the greatest faction on the board, and why is ‘Yes’ the only applicable answer?

I will never admit to such bias (because such bias does not exist in the system that is myself!). I have different reasons for liking each faction I'm in, over the spread of my characters. Hell, I'm not any more biased to the factions I admin/own, over this one. Each one has its merits, and problems. :p

1. I love training threads with our faction characters. I especially like battles though, Pilots need and crave fleet to fleet action. If there in no fleet action it really makes no sense for us to be there. Throw me into combat, I'll write you some kickass material!

2. Pointless poodoo. Like stupid meeting where everyone just talks about nothing, unless it's naval strategy or planning. I don't mind Dev threads if it make sense for me to be there. I hate diplomacy threads, sooooo boring.

3. I can write either way so it does not phase whether open or specific. Mostly prefer open ended so the thread doesn’t stall. Sit around waiting for the next order and it never comes down the pipeline? Now you just nerfed a whole squadron through too much red tape. Give us the mission let us execute.

4. As a pilot? Big objectives or small set doesn’t matter.

5. Why limits? It's ridiculous really. If someone doesn’t post for forty eight hours, disengage and move on.

6. No. We have a lot of work to do internally. We need to clean up our forums of junk and get back on the map running missions and threads. This will draw a member base. We have no fleet skirmishes at the moment and no ground skirmishes. People barley see the Republic these days and most think we are wiped out.

We have a good base of force users, but a lot of rogues are out there wandering. come up with a catch or a selling point. What makes the Jedi order better than say the Levantine or the silver Jedi?

It pays to have a thread up at all times for every character archetype. Give the senators their political thread, the fleeter's our fleet skirmishes, the army their ground missions. You have the pieces use them.

You have the power to develop our defences more IC on the closest world too the OS. Use your characters that are here in a way that makes sense.

We have almost no tech and the Pre-Factory is locked yet we have the capability to produce new models for the fleet and new weapons specifically for NFU's to counter Sith.

Whether for stories sake, or Competitive sake if you're either type of writer, wrap the wounds, refit rearm and take the enemy by surprise. Continue the plotline.

You will have the best fleet, I will make sure of it. Your pilots will at least all be some of best here.

Just to prove I truly care I will say that on Friday Evening (Timezone: CET) I will start looking all these answers over and write a summary of it. I thank those of you who have already answered and urge anyone who hasn't answered yet to do so.

Thank you guys, I love the input and it's really helped me a lot already! <3

So yeah, Friday - Evening - Summary starts.
