HISTORICAL INFORMATION
Born out of the fires of the Surric System Civil War, the SLDF has a history founded in fire and bloodshed but has a bright future ahead of it. Reorganized from the ashes of the System Defense Forces of the Surric System, which fought and beat itself to a bloody pulp in the civil war, the SLDF is a much more streamlined, efficient and effective organization than its predecessor. The first major change to this is the division of the Defense Forces into two standards from the standard/garrison forces, and the Expeditionary Forces. With a universal draft enforced in the Surric System to help rebuild it, all citizens of the system are required to sign up for military/government service. Standard/Garrison units are composed of citizens that wish to only do their time and then move on from the military, going to civilian jobs in the system after doing their required terms and going to an inactive state. Expeditionary Forces are an all volunteer force that is composed of citizens that wish to remain in active service to the military. These forces do not go into an inactive state and are constantly training to deploy and deploying to foreign environments to assist the Confederacy of Independent Systems Defense Forces in military and police actions.
Training for each soldier begins with a basic training course on their home worlds of Surric, Teyr, or Atin, with all Advanced Specialty Training occurring on the planet Atin. This can take anywhere from 24 weeks for basic specialties such as Infantry, Tankers, Mechanics, Sailors, and Support, to two years for combat pilots and advanced specialties that require hundreds if not thousands of hours to properly teach personnel to an exceptional standard within their jobs. With that being said, all advanced specialties, especially those for combat pilots are immediately sent to the Expeditionary Forces, with the remaining specialties getting the choice during their advanced training whether they wish to go active in the Expeditionary Forces, or stay as a Reservist. This causes a natural separation with soldiers and sailors that are more gifted within their jobs to lean towards active service, as the military is a merit based promotion system where the better a soldier or sailor performs the higher rank and greater responsibility becomes available for them to choose to accept. And in the grueling double gravity of Atin, those that want to serve are quickly separated from those that wish to just do their time for citizenship.
The tactics of the SLDF are very much focused on combined arms, with all of the pieces of the military being highly specialized relying on command and leadership to mesh the highly specialized pieces into a combined fighting force that's able to smash any foe before it. This utilizes Tanks, Artillery, Close Support Craft, Space/Air Superiority Fighters all on the backbone of supporting the Infantry. The commissioned officers of the SLDF come up with the planning and give marching orders to the non-commissioned officers of the military that execute said orders and essentially run things in mission or on the field. That being said there are commissioned officers that prefer to lead from the front by example with their non-commissioned officers, these officers seeing increased results and battlefield effectiveness. And all opportunities for promotion being based on merit, this means that those whole excel in their
