- Description: Consisting of an Agri-world, a balanced Continental world, a sprawling industrial/militarized world and two undeveloped resource rich worlds, the Surric System has sprouted into a powerhouse of the Confederacy. Following the restoration efforts of the SLDF spearheaded by Viceroy Draconis, Surric is now home to a massive Corporation in Freebirds Industries, has a sizable internal economy and various trade deals with surrounding systems. Now a Fortress System within the CIS, Surric rises to the many challenges of being a contributing member of the CIS, very much asserting its own independence from outside influences even from other Systems in the CIS. It’s people are a hardy group, having grown up in Chattel Slavery and forcefully winning their freedom during the CIS First edict, this has sprouted intense national pride among all citizens and residents of Surric. This is why the mandatory enlistment for citizenship still remains in effect, however the terms have been adjusted so that each unit is active for two years, before going inactive for four years across various reserve divisions. This has lead to a rapid recovery and militarization of the system, becoming an industrial, research and military powerhouse when it comes to CIS politics.
For many arriving in the system, Surric is a land of opportunity. For those willing to roll up their sleeves and work, there is plenty of demand for skilled and unskilled labor, with labor protection laws and other oversight agencies protecting those who choose that life ensuring the chattel slavery never happens again. For those of intellect there are many research and development laboratories, a Surric System University (offering both technical degrees and higher learning degrees), and various positions where one can get started using their minds to make their living and greatly improve their lot in life, while also contributing to the whole. And for those wishing to serve, the SLDF is the single largest System Defense Force in the entirety of the CIS, rivalling equipment and training quality with line units in the CAF, if not exceeding them. Whatever your calling, so long as you are willing to put the work in Surric is not only willing to accept you, but will also provide you the means to get started. This has led to a massive influx of immigrants from surrounding systems, and there are two major types of people in the population, Residents and Citizens. Residents pay lower taxes, however receiving less government benefits and are allowed to live as they see fit so long as they follow Surric Law. The only requirements to become a Resident is to arrive in Surric, in process legally, and begin working and paying your taxes. Citizenship is a higher class of civilians in Surric, paying higher taxes (as they have an income tax alongside a system wide sales tax) but also receive much more for benefits (medical and college grants for advanced schooling after first term of active duty) and are the only civilians allowed to vote and/or hold public office. This ensures that a flood of outside immigrants cannot perform a hostile takeover of Surric by influencing government administration without demonstrating they are committed to the betterment of Surric as a whole.
The social structure of Surric has also evolved due to the civil war, as with the two classes of civilians being further divided castes. These castes are as follows: Artisans, Technicians / Engineers / Scientists, Workers, Merchants, Administers, and Soldiers. Artisans are the various entertainers, painters, musicians, and other types of people whose main purpose is to create works of art, music, poetry, and other pieces of culture and art for the masses to consume. They are the soul of Surric’s many societies as their contributions can inspire the masses to great joy and help cope with the immense loss, along with creation of many amenities for Surric’s natives and tourists to consume and enjoy. The Scientist Caste are the teachers, engineers, technicians, researchers, and other scientifically minded jobs within the Surric System. Their job is pretty self explanatory, to be the brain of Surric’s Societies and advance the technology, capabilities, and standard of living in the Surric System, and pass all of this knowledge onto the next generation to have them reach even greater heights. The Worker Caste is the life blood of Surric Society, as nothing could be done without the skilled and unskilled hands of the various manual labor, menial, and other hard working jobs of the Surric System. While one of the easiest castes to get into, there is also much oversight when it comes to this sector, as one thing the people of Surric wish to avoid is a resurgence of Chattel Slavery in the system. This means that there are a myriad of protections and benefits for the Worker Caste, alongside a robust healthcare system and various requirements for companies to offer advancement, pension, and other benefits and amenities to increase safety, productivity and long term health of workers. The Merchant Caste are the various traders throughout the Surric System, both those working in one of the various companies that have sprouted up in system, or those that offer other services to the people of Surric such as food vendors, imported goods, and many other items in Surric’s economy. These people are the movers and shakers of the economy of the Surric System. It is here you’ll find a variety of entrepreneurs, sales people, small business owners, bankers, and even stock brokers/managers. Next is the Administer Caste. This is where most of the bureaucrats, administrative workers, and government employees that deal with managing data, accounting, or other aspects of administration. These are the bookkeepers of Surric Society, as their duty is to ensure that everything is documented, from ensuring that benefits are being properly distributed, to tax collection, to even counting the votes during every election. And finally there is the Soldier Caste. The Soldier Caste is unique in that it has two distinct sections, with the police forces, and Active Duty military forces. The difference between the two is that while police forces can be reservists from the military, the only members of the Surric Local Defense Force Expeditionary Forces are considered Active Duty. So while the police are out performing everyday duties of policing, securing, and otherwise shepherding the populations of the Surric System, the Active Duty military forces constantly prepare for all out war. Their training is incessant, their devotion and extremely competitive nature mean that only the best of the SLDF gets in. These form the shield and sword of Surric Society, with the police forces being the protective shepherd, while the SLDF Active Forces form the wrath of a vengeful god should they be provoked. Assignment to a caste is based on an individual’s skills and knowledge, and while it is meant to better suit their skills, assignments can be changed should an individual show the willingness to apply themselves to make themselves better suited to another caste. This means that soldiers can become merchants, workers become administrators, and whatever the individual wishes can be achieved. They just have to apply themselves and then go through necessary training.
This is a relatively brief description of all of the aspects of Surric, its society, and other key points of information.
- Size: Medium
- Wealth: High - After several years of reconstruction and significant reinvestment into the system, the economy is now burgeoning and better than ever.
- Major Imports: Technological components, construction materials/metals, raw metals and ores for refinement into advanced components/materials (Durasteel, Alusteel, and plasteel).
- Major Exports: Foodstuffs, medicinal products, civilian and military technologies, vehicles, personal/capital starships, advanced metals/materials (these are either refined/created alloys using various plants and factories or metals/materials generated by molecular furnaces)
- Unexploited Resources:
- Massive tracts of land on Teyr and Surric
- Large areas of development for military support complexes on Atin (production, maintenance and research)
- A large sea of Deuterium exists on Surric-3 below the ice.
- Large deposits of iron, bronzium, titanium, and other ores on Surric-2 that are dangerously close to the star in system.
- Hyperlanes: Correlian Spine
- Population: High
- System Traffic: High - Due to it's location off of the Correlian Spine Hyperlane it receives a lot of through traffic from people passing just into CIS space, outside of this Surric has become a production and technological hub, leading in areas of research, development and construction of various technologies in both the civilian and military markets.
- Demographics: Current population for the system is three settled worlds with approximately 11 million souls with 8 million citizens and 3 million residents.
- Native Species: Humans, various species of dogs, livestock, and marine life. Various undocumented species on jungle moon of Surric include: Tee-muss, Ruping, Drexl, Pikobi, Crasna, Orbalisk, Boma, Cannok, Zakkeg, Gharzr, Maalraas
- Immigrated Species: Nerfs, Shaak, Banthas
5 planet solar system with Teyr, Surric, and Atin (named after the colonies' founder John Atin), with two uninhabitable planets designated Surric-2, and Surric-3. New points of interest are an orbital shipyard over Teyr with the restoration of the many stations, an oceanic shipyard in Surric’s oceans, a Bastion class station with a nearby drydock facility, and two Orion battlestations covering both major entrance/exit points in the system.
Surric-2 of these planets is a veritable goldmine (see unexploited resources) of resources, however is extremely close to the system's yellow star, having stripped the world of all environmental protections making the surface a rocky nightmare with a firestorm on the side exposed to the sun, and a freezing nightmare on the dark side of the planet. Directly under the surface though, you'll find massive mineral and ore deposits created due to the sun's constant bombardment of the surface with extreme radiation. This forces the outer crust of the planet to be mainly consisting of obsidian, otherwise known as volcanic glass.
Surric-3 is the polar opposite, pardon the pun, as it falls outside of the range of habitable for the sun as well, being a vast frozen wasteland day in and out, being covered by a permanent sheets of ice or several meters of snow. Temperature ranges there from -30 on the warmest of days, to negative -175 degrees at night during a blizzard or one of the many constant windstorms that rage on the planet. To many prospectors that came to these worlds looking to make a fortune from their raw materials present, the climates would be their undoing as the extremes would kill any who came unprepared for what was waiting.
Other notable features include a large debris field where the major battle of the civil war was fought in space, where you'd find two Valiant class star destroyers rammed into each other, with multiple other hulls scattered about in a debris field that stretches out for hundreds of thousands of kilometres. Recovery efforts have since finished but a large swathe of the former battlefield has been marked as memorial sites so the fallen’s sacrifices shall never be forgotten. This includes the mangled wreckage where two Star Destroyers collided in an epic struggle of the might and hope of the masses versus the corporate greed and savagery of the rich. This place is open to explorers and others who wish to see these wrecks in their glory, to look upon the posts where gunners fought to the last, dying at their stations cursing their enemies. Looting of these locations or salvaging anything without express permission is strictly forbidden, and subject to prison time.
The central Bastion Class Station in the system serves as the centermost point of the system aside from the sun. It alongside the planets of the system are immediately noticeable once entering the system. This station is a massive coordination center in times of peace, using its advanced and massive communications and control capabilities to manage, sort, and otherwise direct the various flows of traffic coming into, out of, and through the system. During times of war however, this station becomes a veritable fortress, using its thick hull and shields to provide protection to the Residents of the Surric System, and any refugees that have been otherwise screened and allowed aboard. This allows for the fighting members of the SLDF to focus on their duties at hand, which is actually combating the enemy and taking the fight to them as the residents and other civilian populations shelter in safety. The only other place in the system with similar capabilities is located on the planet of Atin, but will be covered in the Atin section. This alongside a massive Drydock facility capable of retrofitting a massive number of vessels including several Star Destroyer Class Vessels or a single Battlecruiser Class Vessel is nearby.
Surric itself has three moons, two of which are too small to actually sustain life or have an atmosphere, but the closest however is close enough to actually have its atmosphere touch with the planet. This jungle moon is home to many wild and strange species of fauna, most of which is undocumented and unexplored. The planet itself is mostly tropical with main exports being fish and other aquatic food stuffs and materials. Here you'll find many coastal villages and tropical resorts catering to tourists looking to go to the many beaches on the planet. Having vast and extremely deep oceans, there is plenty for the avid sight seer and inner adventurer to go out and explore, from the various undersea locations and caves, to the forest moon with all of their wild and untamed beauty. Be warned though as travel on the forest moon alone or without significant security details (unless you consider yourself extremely capable) is ill advised, as many of the fauna on the moon is carnivorous. Furthermore for those interested to see the new and improved undersea shipyards of Surric will find that these facilities are quite open to the public for viewing, having been modeled and improved off of the very same designs used in the famous Mon-Cala undersea ship yards. These shipyards are massive and capable of supporting capital class vessels, being able to construct up to Battlecruiser class vessels. Another development is suburbs and cities that are becoming centers of production and research are popping up all along the planet’s surface. Most are run by the most prominent corporation that actually started up in the Surric System, Freebirds Industries, however there are many smaller competing firms that have also begun sprouting up across this planet.
Teyr used to have four orbital stations for processing in tourists and for low income housing to support the civilians that worked on the stations. Following the destruction of two of these stations, and the recovery efforts there are now 3 stations, the two original stations and one larger station that was built as a monument to the lives lost during the war. These stations have all been renovated to a newer and better standard of living, allowing for not only the workers of the stations to live in comfort, but also serving as hotels and rentals for tourists and adventurers seeking to travel in the Surric System. Alongside this is an Orbital Shipyard capable of producing up to Frigate and Cruiser class vessels and serves as one of the major production points of these vessels in system. These stations remain both a grim reminder of the evils of runaway corporate greed, alongside a symbol of hope for the people, as they had survived and prospered despite detestable acts such as this. The main attraction to Teyr is the Teyr Rift, a massive canyon network that stretches on for kilometres and is quite vast. That being said otherwise on Teyr there is currently massive amounts of land devoted for farming and raising livestock. Being a massive agri-world, the planet exports mainly food and food based products, and its terrestrial climate makes it extremely viable to introduce various food based and cash crops into the local ecosystems. This alongside the introduction of many livestock species, and wildlife back onto the planet make it a veritable garden paradise world, perfect for farming, hunting, exploration, and many other pursuits.
Atin serves as the home of the system's defense forces, being a massive training ground for the defense forces to muster to, perform their training maneuvers, test weaponry, and anything else that might happen to support the military forces of the system. This planet, at first being the staging point for Surric’s recovery and reconstruction, has now manifested into a full fledged fortress world and massive planetary sized training and mustering ground. It is here that you’ll find various climates, terrains, and biomes to practice, train, and develop military tactics and stratagems and where the Surric Local Defense Force is constantly training. And across the entire world is an industry devoted to producing, maintaining and developing everything for the needs of this army, from the uniforms and smaller gear, to the tanks, star fighters, and munitions used by these brave men and women in uniform. Now that the recovery and reconstruction of the Surric System is complete you will find well over a million troops cycling through at any given time going through their mandatory training cycles for their active military service. And that’s just the regular army. The Surric Local Defense Force Expeditionary Units are based on this planet and are always active, going from rotations within the CDF to training operations with a variety of local, CDF and even other PDFs in the CIS. These forces are the very best of the best Surric has to offer, and are to be considered elite army forces. A new formation, or rather, a new construction that has been built on the planet is a massive 80km3 underground center for population evacuation. This includes all the necessary facilities to support and house a ridiculous number of civilian populations, including power generation, recyclers, molecular furnaces, agriculture facilities, fabrication and repair facilities, and other necessities for a population to be able to stay long term underground in times of war.
SECURITY
High - Now having finished reconstruction and recovery of the Surric System, this system’s forces are roughly 8 million souls strong (supported by various droids and automated equipment to allow for entirely self sustaining operation both within and outside the System). This is completely covering all active and reserve soldiers, sailors, pilots, support personnel, and other living people in the Surric Local Defense Forces. These forces rotate out with only roughly 1.5 - 2 million personnel remaining Active Duty permanently as part of the Surric Local Defense Forces Expeditionary Units, while another 2 million from each of the three Reservist Armies is activated at any given time to perform mandatory upkeep training, rearmament and familiarization with new armaments every two years. This allows for the home front to be constantly protected and patrolled by units that are familiar with their equipment, well trained and motivated to serve their system to the best of their ability, and allowing for four years of civilian life between each activation. And for the members of the Expeditionary Forces, they remain active duty, constantly training, rotating in to deployments with other CDF units, and otherwise being utilized as an active component to help retrain and keep the rest of the army fit for duty. And the Expeditionary Forces is a competitive posting, only taking the best and brightest from the army and navy to fill out its ranks, ensuring a highly effective, motivated and efficient military which prioritizes skill, ingenuity, and grit to allow for their forces to be the best of the best for active duty conventional forces. This combined with the ability to rapidly mobilize and deploy another 6 million personnel when the time arises for meet threats to System and Sector wide security, makes this system not something to be discounted if you threaten to invade the CIS.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
For much of recorded history, the Surric System has been otherwise not noteworthy or just a footnote as the tourist trap on Teyr exists, but otherwise, there wasn't much happening in system. A dutiful population worked in various industries around the system that essentially worked around the second biggest export of the system which was agriculture products. And while there were many barons that ran the various companies, none treated their workers with any degree of respect, treating them little better than slaves if they weren't working as part of the tourist industry. The kept the population in check by giving just enough that the people could survive, but otherwise, they weren't living just going from day to day to surviving one meal to the next.
This all however changed when a call from the Viceroyalty called for a faction wide Inquisition, and while not originally leveled at the system in question, the viceroy began to enact plans to secede from the CIS. However this would be complicated when the news that the Inquisition was coming, and the population began to demand for the Viceroy to step down from his position and the government open up to a general election. The Viceroy declined, instead demanding that the population be put back in line by the various barons controlling a strangle hold on key industries in the system. When enforcers weren't enough, riots began to take place, with people protesting in the streets, and factories went cold, farms went untended, and the tourism became threatened when workers who continued to work despite this received death threats. Now Colonel of Surric's SDF Draconis Wolf was ordered by the Viceroy to enact martial law, and hunt down violent protesters to end the riots. So the SDF deployed to the planets and began to police the areas and try to enact martial law, but before long things began to turn violent. Skirmishes would begin between protesters and SDF forces, bombings would happen, and a resistance movement justified by the Viceroy's attempt to use military force to repress the population would form.
The straw that would break the camel's back however would come from the Viceroy himself, as Draconis had captured several members of the resistance and was preparing them for a formal trial, when the Viceroy ordered the members to be executed immediately. When Draconis refused, citing the various laws and regulations that governed the system, the Viceroy told him to either execute the order or be executed himself for treason. Draconis's answer was simple, and to the point. No. It would be here that the SDF would split into two factions, almost equally divided in number, with those forces loyal to the Viceroy of the system and barons, and those that were loyal to Draconis who now sided with the people of the system. All out war would rage in the system, resulting in millions dead, another million or so wounded/crippled, and with the infrastructure of the worlds in tatters. When the CAF finally responded to the calls of Draconis for aid, citing the treasonous actions of the viceroy, the damage to the system was extensive. And while the "rebels" were winning, at the rate they were advancing there wouldn't be anything left of the system by the time they had won. With the CAF's intervention however, the remainder of the viceroy's forces were stood down, and those that didn't surrender were immediately destroyed. The Viceroy himself was immediately put on trial, found guilty of treason to the CIS among various corruption charges, and was executed by firing squad.
Named an interim Viceroy elect, Draconis Sederius Wolf was selected by his peers and the CAF to personally oversee the system's reconstruction until a proper election could be had. It would be here that Draconis would enact a universal draft, forcing all able bodied men and women in the system to sign up for government or military service that would allow them to be given tests to find the work that best suited people. Schools were quickly set up for children and orphans of the war, and a standardized education system was enacted to quickly try and get things back on track. Everyone would be slotted into a "Caste" that would best suit their skills, and when enough infrastructure was repaired and reestablished, there would be elections for representatives of each Clan from each planet. If members of a certain caste didn't like their jobs or felt like they were better suited to something else, the option to switch was by joining the military or government work force pertaining to said job. If you did well you got to keep the new caste designation and could even continue working into the private sector with this. Using this system would allow for education centers to focus on teaching as many people as fast as they could while still keeping a relatively higher effectiveness for citizens to be in the workforce. And pending reconstruction, all military exercises are suspended to assist with all relief efforts, until such a time that the economy can support itself. A new ideology was born from this, a meritocracy where quality of work was the standard, and corruption was not only highly frowned upon, it was persecuted, often with violence. People became proud of their work and wanted to work because no longer were they just subsisting, the government was enforcing fair wages, universal healthcare, and an education system that was less focused on lining pockets, more focused on raising the standard of living quickly. This would lead to a rapid expansion of industry and growth in not only the public but private sectors as it would be shown to all outside investors. Either get on the train to help rebuild and profit off the projects, or don't and lose out on the biggest gold rush in the entire sector.
From this, a series of small companies would be founded within the system, startups would begin sprouting up across each planet as citizens and residents of the Surric System decided to take matters into their own hands. By the strength of their backs, by the sweat of their brows, by blood shed and steel forged they would make their own future. One company in particular, having been started by a sizable donation of credits and some equipment from The Dire Wolves Mercenary Company (now The Dire Wolves Paramilitary Organization), Freebirds Industries would seize the initiative provided by the government of the Surric System and the vacuum left behind by the various major corporations that had been ousted. They would start an aggressive campaign throughout the system of training residents, accepting citizens into its workforce and building a base of production, research and development, and civil outreach programs in system. It was here that many of its first developments, initially designed for the Search and Rescue role and reclamation projects would find their roots. This would include the acclaimed TCD-series of droids, Raven class jet pack, Luft life support systems, and various smaller vessels would be designed to meet the needs of Surric, which was in the process of a long and arduous rebuild. However they would also take the experience of their current CEO and lead Engineer, Ryan Alphonse, to also begin designing, developing and selling weapons to the CAF at large to fund expansions and growth into this system. This successive development and sale of over fifty individual designs, licensing of modifications, and supplying the CAF with these designs would only serve to pack Freebirds Industries war chest, which it then threw into the reclamation and redevelopment of the Surric System. Credits earned by selling blueprints, bandages, and bullets to the greater CIS would build hospitals, schools, infrastructure and homes for the people of Surric. It was through this method of getting the rest of the CIS to unknowingly invest into Surric's recovery that Surric would once again rise to prominence within the CIS. After 8 long months of non-stop reclamation operations, of cleaning up the various horrors of their civil war, Surric began to experience a newfound influx of refugees from both outside threats in the galaxy, and attacks against the CIS itself. Unable to just house these people, the government of Surric gave them a choice. Either settle and integrate with the population of Surric, or be relegated to areas that made it easier to house, manage, and otherwise take care of these people. And while the camps the second option provided were spartan, the only difference between it and the first option was that with the former there was a chance to make things better for the families. Overwhelmingly people would begin to go through the process of integration into Surric's society, many choosing the path of Citizenship to prove their commitment and others choosing to become permanent Residents. This influx of manpower into the government of Surric's military and administration would lead to redoubled efforts to take back the worlds of the system and begin the construction of various shipyards and factories across the system. And when the time came that many of these worlds recovered from their various attacks, most of the people that decided to integrate would stay in Surric. Because they saw in the various clans, in the castes, in the government lead by people who had served and had people's interests at heart, a better future. Two years after their declaration of Independence and freedom from the previous Viceroy, two years after the vicious civil war, two years after finally ending the violence by retaking the capital, trying the Viceroy and executing him for high crimes against the people the people would come together to celebrate a new holiday. Dubbed "Confederacy First Day", this holiday celebrates the very start of their own revolution and fight for freedom, Executive Order EO 860SP2-1. Without this pivotal moment within the CIS, without the Vice Lord openly declaring the Inquisition to begin investigating the various houses for corruption, without the very fear of god put into each Viceroy at now realizing their fiefdoms were no longer above the law none of this would have transpired.
And it is a glorious day of celebration.
Firstly it is a government holiday, so all personnel deemed not essential to everyday workings of Surric are given the day off, and those that are essential are given mandatory triple overtime pay for their services. All goods "sold" during this day are given freely, and are usable as tax write offs for businesses. There is fireworks, dancing, parades, and at the main festival in the new System Capital of To'lek there is a grand speech given by the Viceroy. This speech would celebrate all of the past work, the spirit of the people, mourn the lives lost both to tyranny and revolution, and reaffirm the fateful vow of the Viceroy of Surric's first oath of office.
"Never Again. Never again will the people of this system know the invisible chains of perpetual poverty. Never again will the people who are elected to represent the people take advantage of this position to secure personal power, wealth, or personal gain. Never again will the people allow such a figure to remain in office. And most of all, never again will the people of Surric allow themselves to bow to outside influences. Never Again,"
Immediately following this reaffirmation of the oath, a display of the SLDF Expeditionary Forces will take place. The setting will be reenacting one of many pivotal battles during the revolution, this time however with the full might of whatever unit is selected for the event. This display of military strength, professionalism and discipline will show to the rest of the people of Surric that they stand together, as one always ready for whatever the galaxy throws at them. This display will include even ships battling it out in orbit, in a live fire exercise with various droids, drones and drone ships that will push each man in the exercise to their limits.
And with this celebration, the stage is set for the future of the system. With a massive, growing, and very healthy economy, a vast and terrifyingly effective system wide defense force, with a robust and efficient government administration bent on ensuring that absolutely no corruption will persist in the system any longer, the System of Surric is a vast place welcome to any either passing through, or looking to start anew.
