SWRP's Creativity Corner

I want to:

1) Take all the time some of you have for complaints/harassment/bullying/general negativity

And turn it into

2) Productivity/Outlets For Creation

A good example of this is (aside from role-playing/writing/factory submissions) the Artwork forum. A lot of cool people are creating cool stuff! You can go request a sig and literally expect someone to pick up on it fairly quickly. I feel like our art generation here is pretty nifty, even if it isn't all 100% original.

So what's something we could do that could provide a new outlet like this? Does anyone have ideas?

Short films.

Krag/Vulcanus's stuff was a big hit.

I've seen people collaborate to make a "trailer" for their site before and it turned out pretty well. There are enough people with the know-how here that I'm sure it's possible.

Featured Artist?

You do member of the month? Or perhaps featured piece? Allow people to submit things and a short description, even if it's tiny alterations like this:

I think a featured spot like Member of the Month *shrugs*

She means a featured artist spot like the member of the month spot that we already have, Silver Wolf.

Essentially, you take a piece of their work and showcase it somehow.

Either by submission or by Staff/Judge pic. -NOTE- I am not getting into it with anyone about what Judges are.

So, I think that is a good idea.

I think the Factory needs a Critique Thread too. Otherwise people will continue to critique the Factory in the "Staff Critique Thread". :D

My goal: Find a whole new outlet for everyone's creativity, with maximum accessibility.

Current progress: Meh. But in my search for The Big Idea, I think I've come up with a few smaller things that might be worth considering.

  • Advice corners for people looking for beginner tips on imaging or even 3D modeling-
  • -mixed with 'show off my stuff' galleries and such. Is there some kind of a 'personal gallery' plugin feature out there that might be compatible with the board? I know for sure there's a lotta people around here that like to work with art that might not be, I dunno, easily usable on the board - abstract digital art, pencil sketches, works in progress, that kinda deal. With the right filesize limitations, it might not be too much of a burden, I dunno. Not my forte.
  • More accessibility for the factory, which is where a lot of people on the board get creative. Vanilla 'example ships' and 'example guns' and 'example armor' that new people can customize so they don't feel like they're starting from scratch.
  • What hooked me on this site was that anyone could make a faction, anyone at all. Being able to have your own little set of forums for a minor faction, and express your idea that way, is awesome. Being able to grow bigger and get your own little splotch on the map is likewise awesome. One thing that might really help people feel part of things might be an intermediate step of sorts -- a minor faction, after X time and activity, might be allowed one little world of their very own. Still vulnerable to invasion, of course, and it wouldn't make sense for minor factions to be able to Dominion and such, but that one little 'home base' dot could mean a lot to a certain subset of people, and I suspect that subset might be larger than I've thought. There's plenty of VERY creative niche interest ideas that could never go major but could give a lotta people room to...express themselves.

[member="Jorus Merrill"] YES! Give the active Minor's one smidgen dot! It's all we need, and might encourage more people to set up planetary governments since then they'd actually have worth!

But they should have to be approved, and maybe instead of listing every single Minor faction dot, just color them all the same and list them as "Independent".

Hell to the no. Sorry, but editing the map is time consuming enough as it is with only Major Factions to worry about. That map has more maintenance than anyone realizes or cares about - so long as it keeps getting updated.

Find a way to automate this process, and I'm totes down.

Edit: Not to mention this would breed new minor factions who's goal would be to achieve that single dot - then do nothing. Go inactive. Then we'd have another minor faction check in to devote Staff's limited resources to. Another huge headache to suffer - monthly.

Sorry to be so abrasive in my response to this, but the current way we do things is enough of a migraine that it won't ever see any advancing unless we technologically improve/automate our resources. Which is possible, but beyond my current motivation/skill.

I could say a bunch of creative ideas that might act as solutions to your problems in terms of the map, but I have a feeling there really is no solving them going inactive, and my ideas would only create more confusing layers that are really just unnecessary. Could permission at least be given to a Minor Faction to defend one world? Rebellions are cool and all, but that's only after a planet is occupied, and only if they can join the Major faction taking it.

However, I will ask this: would it be beneficial, or detrimental if we turned the Galaxy Map update system into a system like we have employed for the Factory Judges?

Always been my goal to start drawing characters from this site.

Possibly make a little comic strip about a part of an RP or two.

Then make longer comic strips to cover a whole RP or what not.

Cause, I like that kind of stuff. Now to find the motivation to draw again..
