Bunker-level Normal
If you aren't aware, there are two new shows airing on Syfy right now in the US. I'm not sure about international availability, so chime in if you know.
For US-viewers, you can catch up on Hulu if you have the right cable subscription, or buy the episodes on your favorite (iTunes, Amazon, Google Play) media store. The first episode of Killjoys is available for free on Google Play right now.
The first is Dark Matter, a campy 90's style series about a crew of anti-heroes who wake up on a ship without their memories. The characters seem to draw some inspiration from the cast of Firefly (it remains to be seen if this is a true spiritual successor or not), and the show is co-produced by Stargate veteran Joseph Mallozzi.
The second is Killjoys, a bit more edgy drama that surrounds three bounty hunters in a Cowboy Bebop-esque story. The smaller cast means the stories are a bit faster paced, and the plot is tighter, though the show spares no depth in detailing its universe. The cast seems to have a good rapport already, which should help propel the series from potentially good to good.
The final series is coming in December, The Expanse, based on the book series of the same name by James S.A. Corey. This series has been likened to Game of Thrones in its expansive storytelling, and is likely going to be the biggest budget of the three. From reading the books, this series is going to be really exciting, with a cohesive story (if you hate Game of Thrones' meandering plot, THIS is the show for you) and well-written characters.
If you love space operas, or science fiction, or watching anything besides wrestling on Syfy, 2015 is the year for you. I've seen the available episodes of the first two shows, and I'm cautiously optimistic about both of them. Science Fiction is back on TV, and it is glorious!
