TAEGIS BATTLE SHIELD

Intent: To provide a battle shield for the Eldorai Angelii. This traditional defence is designed to be a powerful defence but not overpowered. Against ‘modern’ weaponry and lightsabres it is less effective but still offers protection.

Description: The Taegis has been the Eldorai battle shield for centuries, only slightly improved on since the Kar’zun wars brought it to prominence. Today the shield is used primarily by the Angelii and elite infantry units. The shield itself is very heavy, especially for Eldorai, and is thus only entrusted to the best warriors.
The design of the shield broadly was a kite shield with the face and rim protected by a power field generated by protectors inside the shield. This energy field enabled the user to deflect blasters, projectiles and shrapnel, but with little ability to deflect where said reflections go.
The activation of the power field is controlled by a button near the wearer’s hand grip. Due to the large size and less intense power field compared with a Sarix, the shield can be powered for up to three hours before needing recharging or replacement of the power cells. Replacing the power cells cannot be done in the field as it requires disassembly. In a long struggle this can leave the wielder in a situation where they run out of power.
The shield’s power can also be overloaded by too much firepower. Since the Eldorai are unused to blasters or lightsabres, these especially are dangerous when concentrated.
The shield’s weight and bulkiness is its greatest weakness. Whilst it is extremely hard to penetrate with anything which is not a heavy weapon, any opponent who can get to the side or behind the wielder can strike before the shield-bearer can recover. Since Eldorai armour is much lighter, flanking an Angelii will case them at the least to drop the shield or be cut down.
On the other hand the shield is bulky and strong enough for the wielder to use it as a weapon to bash an enemy or to shove them over so they can be finished off.
The shield is used primarily in three tactical uses.
First is in conjunction with the Sarzmigar, in which case the wielder acts in a defensive posture, like a pikeman or hoplite of Earth history. This method is extremely hard to overcome without flaking the Eldorai or using heavy weapons.
The second is with the Sarix, in which case the wielder acts like a swordsman or legionnaire of Earth history. This is an aggressive stance and despite the weight of the shield the Eldorai can move quickly and attack an enemy in melee combat with great ferocity. This tactic is hard to counter without flanking, heavy weapons or multiple opponents.
The last is a more modern invention to counter the raiders and slavers who beset Kaeshana in recent decades. This involves using the shield in one hand and a pistol in the other. This gives the Eldorai considerable protection and hitting power at short to medium range. The weakness of this is if an enemy closes to melee range, forcing the Eldorai to fall back on their melee weapons.
Overall the Taegis is a very strong defensive barrier hindered by its weight, bulk and weakness versus ‘modern’ galactic weapons.
