Description: Founded in 1,527 BBY by Daimyo Toshirou Tanaka, the company was originally named Tanaka Zosensho (Tanaka Shipyards). The company initially designed seagoing vessels for both civilian and military use and quickly gained prominence in the shipbuilding trade from their innovative designs, durable engineering, and revolutionary construction methods. After a series of small conflicts during a change of power within the Shogunate around 1,442, Daimyo Minoru Tanaka, Toshirou's grandson, bought out a small company specializing in the construction of space-going ships, namely small freighters, couriers, and starfighters. Realizing that such a purchase would warrant immense opportunities for his family and company, he sold most of the seagoing drydocks and construction facilities and reorganized the company to the production of orbital vessels almost entirely.
For the next few hundred years, Tanaka Orbital Shipyards produced more and more of Asahi's top competitor ship models, even earning production contracts from the Shogun of the time, Hiro Mitsuhide. This period of time was determined to be a boon for the company and was viewed by many as a "golden age" for the Shipyards. Another hundred years turned by within which T.O.S. expanded in size, nearly doubling it's worth over a hundred years which was nearly six to seven times the size it had been when it was first founded as a seagoing shipyard company.
For the next several generations, Tanaka Orbital Shipyards gained more and more prowess in the ship construction industry of Asahi and was easily recognizable as a manufacturer name planet-wide. Individual Daimyo and even the Shoguns in their generational procession would often organize supply contracts with T.O.S. and occasionally would order specially designed ships from the company for specific purposes, both military and civilian.
In 418 BBY, the Emperor himself sought audience with the head of the T.O.S., then owned and headed by Daimyo Ryouta Tanaka. The meeting produced the Emperor's first, personally owned, space capable ship and brought a great deal of honor and prestige to the company and the Tanaka family. For generations afterwards, T.O.S. was known unofficially as the Emperor's first choice in ship design and orders and such prestige was well noted by the many clans and families on Asahi.
Around the time of the Clone Wars, the Tanaka family owned easily the largest shipyard on Asahi and was often the first choice when new ship construction contracts were offered. Occasionally, the Shogun (around this time the position of Shogun was held by the Nakamura family from 289 BBY - 142 ABY) would simply approach the Tanaka family before offering the contracts publicly so as to reduce the delay a squabble or an auction of sorts would bring about.
Prior to the Gulag Virus impacting Asahi's moon base in 425 ABY, the Tanaka family enjoyed a powerful position on Asahi. The ships that greeted the foreigners in 425 ABY were manufactured by Tanaka and, as many of the Tanaka family had learned the trade their family dealt in, many of the officers upon those ships were of the Tanaka family. Daimyo Kenta Tanaka, head of T.O.S. and Vice Admiral of the Asahian Planetary Defense Fleet, met with the outsiders in Sutafainda Chiku (Star Finder District), Asahi's moon base. It was he that, with the Emperor's and Shogun's backing (Then held by the Yamauchi family from 331 ABY - 428 ABY), negotiated with the outsiders to bring Asahi back to the galaxy. Upon the outsider's departure, Kenta Tanaka was also the first to develop the symptoms of the Gulag Virus.
Kenta acted quickly and used his authority to cut off the moon base from the rest of Asahi, including the fleet. Upon speaking with the Shogun and Emperor, despite his critical illness, he implored them both to quarantine the base with the Emperor's command. Understanding the necessity of the action and the dangers of the virus on the base, the Emperor decreed the base to be quarantined martially until the sickness abated. The virus eventually wiped out the entire population of Sutafainda Chiku and the tragedy was deemed to be an ill omen and struck from all records. However, a few shreds were not lost.
Before meeting with the outsiders, Kenta had ordered his ships to fully scan the foreign vessel and, in the process, gleaned a rough outline on Hyperdrive manufacture. He'd then ordered the scans to be sent directly to the Emperor, bypassing the Shogun entirely, and swearing the men who knew of the scans to never speak of it. The Emperor took the scans and locked them away underneath the Imperial Palace in Saisho no Aki where they stayed until around 700 ABY.
Shortly after the incident, the Shogun's power base fractured as Daimyo were moved from his cause. Most believed that the Shogun had done nothing during the crisis and that the true power of the Shogunate must reside not only with the most powerful family, but also with the most proactive family. The Tanaka family was easily selected and, with the support of the majority of the most powerful Daimyo on Asahi, the Shogunate fell to Kyo Tanaka, Kento Tanaka's son, in 428 ABY.
Eventually, the hyperdrive plans were rediscovered and, by decree of the Emperor, were replicated in secret. The result was a rudimentary hyperdrive that, while functional, was very slow (equivalent to a 12.0 or slower). Three courier-type craft were made, each with this crude type of hyperdrive. The Emperor then hand picked three of his most trusted men - Takeshi Yoshida, Noburo Mori, and Ichiro Masamune - to use the ships to explore the galaxy and make contact with anyone they found. The company that made these ships in secret was none other than the Tanaka Orbital Shipyards owned then by Shogun Takehiko Tanaka.
None of the men returned when the ships and hyperdrives were finally completed in 720 ABY and the men were presumed lost (for Yoshida and Mori, this was the case, as they suffered equipment failure and improper hyperspace course plotting respectively. Masamune appeared over Atrisia and crashlanded, suffering amnesia that lasted his entire life, though he later settled down and married). The venture was deemed a failure and struck from the records, fading only into myth and legend.
In 748 ABY, the Emperor removed his decree of martial quarantine from Asahi's now abandoned and derelict moon base, now turned into a mausoleum. He contracted Tanaka Orbital Yards, then owned by Shogun Sota Tanaka, and Mitsuhide Construction, then owned by Kiyoshi Mitsuhide, to cleanse, refurbish, and rebuild the moon base. The project was begun in 749 ABY and finished in 755 ABY. The Emperor financially rewarded both families handsomely for their efforts in the long project.
The Mitsuhide took the money and constructed the Mitsuhide Doraidokku (Mitsuhide Dry Docks), a sprawling, city sized industrial center designed to expand their business towards sea ship construction as such shipping methods were gaining popularity once again with recent technological advancements. Tanaka Orbital Yards took the money and constructed two satellites orbiting Asahi. Named Tanaka Kido Zosensho-A and Tanaka Kido Zosensho-B, the two, brand new, Orbital shipyards served to allow the T.O.S. to construct even the largest ships for the Asahian fleet.
Now, with the advent of galactic rediscovery on hand, Tanaka Orbital Shipyards, now owned by Shogun Juro Tanaka, looks outward and to the future for expansion, design, and construction in a galaxy frought with war, conflict, and... opportunity.
