- Versatile material made from shells. That's it, that's the gimmick.
- General Protection: Especially from environmental factors.
- Versatility: It can be easily modified and used to make a lot of different things.
- Mass Produced: It's also pretty cheap.
- Lightsabers and Other Exotic Weapons: Don't expect it to withstand lightsabers, disruptors, space magic, etc.
- Not As Good: Versatility tends to make a material overall worse at protecting against certain factors compared to more specialized materials.
Tapia is a catch-all term for any material in which the primary ingredient is shells. Originally it referred to a type of cement made from burning shells to create lime, a synthetic analogue of coquina, a type of naturally occurring sedimentary rock derived from prehistoric fossils. Tapia in concrete form is still relatively common as a building material on less civilized worlds.
Atargatis Industries makes tapia that has been processed in various ways. It can be used in building, but also in starships, armor, weapons, tools, and so on. Atargatis has also grown shells in labs, altering their makeup to make them much stronger and more durable than shells found in nature. This tends to be mainly for aesthetic purposes, however.
