Could work. I like your categories.

Armament: (Give your ship an armament rating. Please use a scale of 1-10, where 1 are a TIE fighter's weapons, and 10 are the batteries of a super star destroyer.)

Maneuverability: (How agile is your ship? Can it take tight turns? Please rate this from 1-10, with 1 being slower than a bantha, 10 being crazy agile like a TIE Interceptor.)

Hyperdrive Speed: (How fast is your ship in hyperspace? Max: 0.5. Links: Hyperdrive Classes)

Moved to Staff discussion. I'd like to hear everyone's opinions so far on this possible replacement for both the old Starship Template/Starship Guide.

It's not wholly finished, but mostly intact, and I will be working on it as the weekend progresses.

My thoughts so far and my mission statement in a small paragraph(s):

CREATING FACTORY SHIPS

-Everyone knows how to make a character by the time they get to the Factory, so making ships/vehicles should be more like making a character, since there is less of a learning curve.

-Most everyone that uses the Factory now has seen the templates we've had in the past, so we shouldn't deviate too heavily from the current format except in the places it is unecessarily complicated and places that do not contribute to role-play.

-Making a ship should only be complicated if you want it to be, so the idea is to make it as expansive as possible for those who wish to really dive in, but as simple as possible for those who just want to make cookie cutters.

-I want the ship guide gone. The amount of research is already high without it, it has added so much more than is needed to understand. Providing baselines that can be adjusted via the template is so much karking easier. However, incorporating the knowledge gained by the creation of the Ship Guide should be incorporated into the templates, so members can learn on the go while filling out each template.

-Focus more on restricting the more abused technologies, like Stealth Technology itself, in the Restricted Items list rather than gunning after the source of Stealth Technology like Stygium.

I like it. I feel that jumping the weapons rating up to 20 etc will eventually involve creating a comparative table listing known ships, but still.
I really like the idea of doing like an image we can link to, or a google doc, that has ships of comparative size listed on our armarament/maneuverability scales.

0-20 is quite a large range. Have you considered doing it as a 0-10 light and 0-10 heavy attack? Light meaning against starfighters and corvettes, heavy meaning against everything else.
Gives a bit more range to things and allows bombers, carriers and such which are good against one but not the other to do their thing too.

It's a large range to avoid getting caught up in the cookie cutter argument some people will throw our way. I don't wish to complicate it further by splitting it into two 0-10 scales, but I feel you are correct that we should be a bit more descriptive and possibly provide examples for the ranges.

There's nothing stopping them from expanding already. I mean, sure, you have to put a number for maneuverability, but in the description... or special features... you could definitely expand on *why* it's so maneuverable. The same goes for Armament Rating. It literally says "and/or", meaning you don't even need to adjust to the rating - it's just there for people who want to cookie cut that part of the template.

Because I'll tell ya what, sometimes I wanna make a generic transport or something that doesn't deal with gun counts/bombs/etc. Or a merchant vessel. Or a dedicated carrier. And I don't want to have to deal with gun counts. The rating allows me to go... oh okay....3! And then suddenly, it's just light weapons. Yay. Most everything is gonna beat it.

Furthermore, Ratings are a great way to weaken a submission without needing to do a development thread. A Factory Judge could easily go

"Okay, I see you have these awesome weapons you wanna add in... can I get you to roll down those Armament/Maneuverability numbers for me?"

This makes the player willingly accept that he must make his submission weaker without needing to do a role-play for it, while at the same time making it easier for a Judge to accept the entry.

And while I'm not opposed to a ranking system to put a ship on a scale of power, canon ships have their guns listed. Why shouldn't we do the same?

I'm not saying we shouldn't. I am saying it's not conducive to role-play, only to statisticians. Nobody role-plays (or even considers, really) their gun counts unless it's a major gun.

So the template meets halfway with the statement "and/or". You can choose the rating scale, or you can list them out. I've even supplied the ship guide's Standardized Load Outs in a link at the end.

And just to bring up the topic from last night, where do dropships and freighters fit into this new system?
I'm not sure. Would you rather they were added to Starfighters or Corvettes as Variants? Or we could add them to each template until Cruisers and above.

[member="Tefka"]

Well if you're not careful, you're gonna have a bunch of 90 meter "starfighters" packed into carriers.

Why not make Starfighters 1-25 meters, and make a new category called Support (or some other thing to that effect) from 25-100 meters that would include things like freighters and dropships?
