Born to a pair of wealthy doctors on Agamar, Tel had an easy but exciting childhood of wealth and privilege. He was a voracious learner, so he soaked up dinner table conversation about medical ethics and exotic treatments. He was an adventurous soul, so he relished the opportunities he had to travel, and to learn everything he could about new places and species. He was a dreamer, so he cherished hopes of helping to save the galaxy just like the heroes he read about from centuries ago. And from the age of eleven on, he watched the galaxy burn. From high school to university and beyond, he held onto a determination to use everything he had been given to save lives and help people.Tel's problem was being too serious. Although never judgmental and an excellent listener, he simply didn't have the same experiences as most of his peers, more at home with books and deep political discussion than drinking and dating. He formed few strong friendships, drifting from place to place often and feeling generally unmoored in life. He did his best to channel his loneliness and discontent into something productive. He worked hard, gaining a Core Worlds education that further isolated him from his backwater peers on Agamar. But that education, and the service he did while he gained it, made him into an excellent candidate to join any of the aid organizations helping the refugees of the galactic conflict.
Tel went on to work for many of those groups in the years that followed. His objection was that they never did enough - he was impossible to satisfy. He felt the pain of others keenly, showing an uncanny ability to understand the feelings and motivations of even total strangers. He wanted to take greater and greater risks to aid the oppressed, and he did, going far beyond the bounds of law and good sense to infiltrate Sith-occupied worlds. Any ordinary man would almost certainly have been arrested or killed the first time he tried something as mad as sneaking under the nose of the Sith Empire, but Tel's uncanny senses kept him one step ahead of inquisitors and police forces for a while.
When Agamar fell, with Tel's family left missing and perhaps dead, the young man refused to give up. It was all too personal evidence of the power and evil of the Sith, and that only drove him to try harder to rescue as many as he could from their clutches. When the Galactic Alliance collapsed, however, something inside Tel broke. Everything he had done, all the people he had helped, had been like a drop of rain on the windscreen of the Empire's onrushing speeder. The Core Worlds were collapsing again; the brief dream of light had been snuffed out, crushed between Sith and First Order, and all the refugees who had been resettled there were once again vulnerable, as if they'd never been rescued.
But when Tel snapped, collapsing into drunkenness and despair, something began to wake inside him. His senses, always beyond the ordinary, became almost painfully keen. He began to witness distant places and events, or to see what was about to happen moments before it did. Slowly, he began to realize what was happening - the Force was with him, just like the Jedi he had always admired. One the one hand, this put him in even more terrible danger. The Sith would surely hunt him, to turn or destroy. On the other, with that power, maybe he could do more than he ever could before. Maybe he, even alone, could fight for others, and not just help them run away.
To be a self-taught Jedi on the edge of Sith space was almost certainly a suicidal proposition. But Telran Dimmias found that he was not afraid to die for the right reasons.
