OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
GENERAL INFORMATION
  • Name: Age of the Three Fathers
  • Reform Type: Military, Economic, and Social Reform
  • Reform Passage: Royal Decree
  • Description: Building on their father's legacy, brothers Thyrian and Thurion divide the realm into the Four Marks; the North-, South-, East-, and Westmark territories, each governed by a Warden keeping the jarls and chieftains in line and answerable only to the High King, thereby decentralising power and establishing a clear chain of command. They also foster increased cooperation between the different marks with new trade routes and improve travel time through infrastructure such as a highway system. Clan warfare is abolished altogether. Relations with the Aelvar and Beorni are restored and formal treaties are signed, declaring the Three Kindreds as allies forevermore.
SOCIAL INFORMATION
  • Notable Figures Involved in the Reform:
  • Public Reception: Overwhelmingly positive reception, with the exception of a handful of disgruntled lords. Whilst generally distrustful of change, the results speak for themselves; a planetwide spirit of unity and cooperation replacing centuries of suspicion and hostility. Honour and brotherhood is restored to the realm, like the First Father would have wanted.

  • Participants:
  • Overview: The Vinterbound, an undead host of fallen warriors driven to carnage by a mysterious artifact exerting its will upon them, march on Tháinbroek. Thrand Dawnbringer prepares for a siege, ready to defend the ancient capital alongside his sons, Thyrian and Thurion, and their spouses. A fierce battle takes place as the undead scale the walls, and eventually break down the main gate. Thrand is buried beneath the rubble as his sons face off against a hulking creature, yet when they are overpowered the High King reemerges to land a crippling blow at the cost of his life. While Thurion cradles their dying father, Thyrian finishes off the brute and destroys the artifact controlling them, causing the undead horde to retreat. Thyrian succeeds his father, his brother being the first to swear fealty.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
Shattered by the loss of their father, eldest son Thyrian of House Heathfire is crowned the new High King despite his recent return to Midvinter and brief reunion with his kin. Sworn fealty by his younger brother Thurion — who many, including himself, agree should have been declared Thrand's successor — the two brothers begin working towards realising their father's vision of a united Midvinter, free of petty squabbles and brotherly wars. Having witnessed the old Wolf King becoming overburdened with duties and ill with work, the Phoenix recruits the Lion as Lord Commander of the Realm — second only to the High King himself, yet equals in heart and mind.

Working closely together, the Phoenix and the Lion intend to reorganise the world into four territories; the Four Marks, each with their own chain of command ending in a Warden who answers directly to the High King from his Great Hall in Tháinbroek. Gone were the long-fought over borders since days of antiquity, as clans were made to intermingle and stand together as fellow countrymen. Trade routes were drawn up, further encouraging a sense of community across the land. Never before have the Valkyri stood as one people, fighting not for land or power but for survival.

Perhaps even more an impressive a feat was Thyrian's foreign policy, for it was during his reign that the Treaty of the Three Kindreds was signed between the Valkyri, Beorni, and Aelvar. The Beorni returned to their native soil, their milennia-long exile finally ended. The Aelvar, long thought a mere fairytale, lowered the wards keeping their forest realm secret, revealing themselves and joining the defense of their world.

Thyrian would even go on to marry his eldest son to the daughter of the elven Queen Aelwen, further establishing good relations between their two peoples. This did put him in a bind, however, as Thrand was his heir apparent and had been groomed from childhood to succeed him. His second son, Theryn, was young and was spending long years offworld, and the twins Thibbi and Thebba were just toddlers at the time.

However, the issue of succession would not trouble him for long, as 20 years into his reign Midvinter would come under demonic invasion, laying waste to Tháinbroek and holding him hostage. His brother Thurion would lead the combined armies of Midvinter against the invaders and send them back to the hell they came from, but too late to save his king. Thyrian the Uniter would sacrifice himself to seal the hellspawn away, spending his final moments surrounded by his close loved ones.

Before passing, he pleaded with his beloved brother to succeed him, knowing he would otherwise refuse the Crown if offered. Saying his farewells, the King's fire finally burned out, and he was placed upon the funeral pyre alongside all those that had perished that day.

Thyrian the Uniter, the Phoenix King, was hailed and mourned by all peoples of Midvinter. His two decades of donning the crown had brought together the Three Kindreds, ending ancient prejudices and bringing to light old scars in need of healing. It was during his reign that the Beorni and Aelvar were discovered; it was he who constructed the Fortress of Dawn, home of the Dawnguard; it was he who reshaped the realm into what persists to this day.

It is with a guilty conscience and great reluctance that the Third Father succeeds the Second, wishing every day he could have his brother back.
