Everything I'll ever love decayed over the years

Location: Canto Bright
Objective: Work Out Some Issues
Tags: -- Solo For Now --

The casino planet of Canto Bright shimmered like a jewel in the vast, black sea of space. Its orbiting city was a neon dreamscape—an electric constellation of pulsing lights, buzzing billboards, and holographic advertisements that bled into the night sky. Towering spires of chrome and glass stretched high above, their surfaces reflecting a thousand colors in a dizzying kaleidoscope. Beneath them, the streets thrummed with the hum of energy, the air thick with the scent of exotic perfumes and the low murmur of gamblers chasing fortune. From a distance, it looked like a star that had fallen to the ground, its light never dimming, always burning bright, always promising something more.

Katarine was sitting on the windowsill of her hotel room with the window open and a light breeze moving through her free hair. The Jedi Master had been staring at the lights so long her eyes were red and watery but she just couldn't seem to look away. In a way the pulsing lights and music below were almost meditation inducing as the young slender woman just sat there and soaked it all in. The green eyed woman was feeling oddly distant and felt a depression edging into her senses. Her life as an undercover agent was a lonely one and as she sat there she ruminated on the fact that she had very few real connections to this galaxy. She had precious few friends, even among her Jedi peers. In fact only really Valery Noble Valery Noble or Connel Vanagor Connel Vanagor really made the list. She knew other Jedi such as Jonyna Si Jonyna Si or Caltin Vanagor Caltin Vanagor or even Kahlil Noble Kahlil Noble but she wasn't really close enough to them to consider them friends. Kat was on the outside looking in to the Jedi Order and perhaps it was partially because of her age and the fact that centuries had past since her old life. Of course Valery was older than Kat was and the Jedi Grandmaster seemed to fit in just fine. Maybe it was the lack of a proper Jedi training that kept Katarine at arms length. After Order 66 the Order had been destroyed and the Jedi were scattered to fend for themselves. Katarine had checked the archives to read her file but there was precious little there. An account of the padwans she'd trained and a few notes about her past but most of it was blotted out to allow her the anonymity of undercover assignments. Sometimes it felt as if she wasn't supposed to exist anymore and the galaxy somehow knew that and was pushing her away from a true calling again.

She sighed at that depressing thought and pushed her long brown and white hair out of her face, the first time she'd stirred in hours. Technically she was on an assignment but the trail had gone cold and leads were hard to come by. In the nighttime air her thoughts drifted towards the pilot Zane Cameron Zane Cameron and she smirked, wondering what the flyboy was up to at this hour. There had been chemistry there between them but nothing ever came of it. That was partially Katarine's fault. The last time she'd tried to find love was one of her darkest moments. She had never quite recovered from it—the way he'd left without a word, just a cold silence where once there had been warmth. The ache had settled into her bones, a constant throb that never quite went away, no matter how many hours she buried herself in work or how many nights she drowned in drink. That night, though, it had been different. She'd slipped into the blur without hesitation, the darkside presence an old, familiar companion. Shots of whiskey and cheap tequila blurred the edges of her pain but the darkness did the heavy lifting, and for a few fleeting hours, she had almost convinced herself that nothing mattered—that she could burn it all away. Her head had spun, her heart had pounded, and the walls of the bar had felt like they were closing in as if the entire world was swirling down a drain. When the sun came up, she couldn't remember half the faces, only the lingering taste of regret and the sharp, hollow emptiness that had settled back into her chest. The days turned to months and years of this pain and she wasn't one to go chasing that experience again.

Yet sitting here alone with the glowing streets reflected on her porcelean skin Katarine couldn't deny that she wanted to belong again. She fished her datapad out of her pocket and scrolled the handfull of numbres she knew, wondering if it was time to reach out to someone so she could hear a friendly voice. She'd been undercover for over six months now and hadn't so much as heard any news about the Jedi. The silence in her hotel room was suffocating, a weight she could feel pressing on her chest as she sat by the window, staring out at the bright, crowded streets. It had been centuries since she'd last seen her old friends, since laughter had filled the rooms, since the familiar warmth of their voices had brought the world into focus. Now, there was only the hum of city traffic and the occasional echo of her own footsteps, too loud in the hollow space. She missed the simple things: the way they'd argued over pizza toppings, the comfort of their company during quiet mornings, the feeling of belonging in a world that often felt too big. But it wasn't just their absence that stung. It was the ache of knowing they were out there, living in the Force without her, moving on while she remained suspended in time, caught between memories and the cold reality of a loneliness that no amount of music or distraction could fill.

Her deep green eyes traveled back to the datapad, wondering if she should make that call.

Katarine retreated from the cool breeze into the confines of her temporary living quarters. She sat on the cheaply made bed and let her fingers hover over the contact information for Valery Noble Valery Noble . What would Kat even say to the woman? Sorry to bother you but I am feeling lonely and like I have no friends? It sounded pathetic even thinking the thought let alone saying it out loud. Besides Valery had a family to raise and and entire Order to manage. There was no sense bothering the great woman with the troubles of a pitiful out of place Jedi Master.

She scrolled down to her next contact, Connel Vanagor Connel Vanagor and hesitated. Things were finally okay between them again and she didn’t want to mess it up. Besides Connel was a Shadow now and he might be undercover or in a dangerous situation himself. What if her call ruined that? Or worse what if we thought it was weird and inappropriate for a master to be calling a knight like that? Connel set a lot of store in ranks.

She kept scrolling and hovered over the name Zane Cameron Zane Cameron . She bit her lip but wouldn’t let her finger push dial. For all she knew Zane was sharing his bed with the flavor of the week and her call could ruin things for him. She hadn’t been very receptive to him on Hapes and he might have decided to drop her altogether.

She groaned and sat the data pad on the side table and lay on her back. There wasn’t one person in this entire galaxy she truly felt connected to, or at least not one close enough that she could call with something like this. The realization made her blink back tears, which only confused her more. Was this not the Jedi way? She had been taught attachments were forbidden so the fact she had none was truly a blessing right?

Her mind drifted once more towards the Noble family. They were so happy and in love and yet both were Jedi. Even Caltin had a wife and child. So many Jedi out there had significant others. Was being exposed to all of this changing her own views on attachment? Was that the cause of this consuming loneliness that was attacking her senses so tightly?

Deciding she couldn’t risk sitting here and calling another Jedi to admit how pathetic her life was she sat up and went to her closet. She dressed in a little black dress and boots that could conceal her lightsaber. She would throw herself into her work and comb every club on this planet until she found a lead. Anything to escape the crushing feeling from engulfing her.

The music pulsed through the club, a rhythmic thrum that seemed to shake the very air, yet amid the flashing lights and laughter of those around her, she felt utterly alone. She moved through the crowd, her smile a practiced mask, but her eyes betrayed her—empty, distant, as if she were standing on the edge of something she couldn't reach. Conversations blurred into background noise, and every touch, every glance, felt like a reminder that, despite being surrounded by bodies and noise, she was trapped in her own isolation. She longed for a connection that seemed just beyond her grasp, an unspoken loneliness that no amount of flashing lights or upbeat music could fill.

She wove through the crowded club, the air thick with the scent of sweat and perfume, her steps automatic as the music thrummed like a distant heartbeat. Everyone seemed lost in their own world, laughing, dancing, connecting—but she was a ghost among them, unseen and untouched. Her smile, though bright, felt like an empty gesture, her thoughts a swirl of disconnection. As she reached the back door, the cool night air greeted her like a forgotten friend, and she slipped outside into the alley, leaving behind the blinding lights and pounding bass. The city's hum was quieter here, the darkness offering a strange sense of relief. She stood there for a moment, the weight of her solitude settling in, the cold air a sharp contrast to the warmth she had left behind. It was better this way, she thought, as she pulled her jacket tighter around her shoulders. Out here, at least, no one expected anything from her. She could drop the mask and stop looking for a criminal that she now believed might not even be on the planet.

She walked down the alley a bit, goosebumps appearing on her slender exposed legs as she pulled her jacket closer to her. There were others walking on the main street beyond. This planet never truly slept because greed never really went to sleep. In a way it reminded her of Zeltros.

At the thought of the party planet she closed her deep green eyes and took a deep breath. A flash of the tall darksider she'd once used as her own brand of drug flashed in her mind but she pushed it aside. Was it withdrawals she was suffering? Maybe she just needed a hit of oblivion. She fished her datapad out of her pocket again and sighed again and leaned against the brick in the alley. They didn't make sponsors for people addicted to the darkside. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She could hear the pulsing bass softly from the other side of the wall. All the club goers were oblivious to her struggle outside.

Without conscious thought her fingers fidgeted with the communication link. A moment latter she put it to her ear, eyes still closed and no true idea what she was doing.

"Hey Connel.. it's... it's Kat..."

A good night’s sleep has come in short supply lately. Connel didn’t mind as it was a good experience with all of the assignments he had, but when he was able to, he took full advantage. So there he was, sprawled out in his bed, okay maybe “sprawled” was a generous term as Buster was up there too and was sidled up next to him. So in reality it was Buster commanding most of the bed, and Connel was stretched out in about a fourth of it.

He normally did not, but had forgotten to take off his headset microphone comm-link. It was tiny and form sitting, so Connel did not feel any discomfort when he rolled over (not like that was happening with his best friend sidled RIGHT up on his back).

2pwZ0kc.jpg
The problem with the headset was that it was set for “assignment” mode so it was set to “vibrate” and when it went off…

… it startled the FRELL out of him.

Arms went flying…

Legs went kicking…

Pups went jumping…

Sitting up and pressing the “call” button he heard a familiar voice, wondering what time it was he looked around…..

Is everything okay? What’s up?

Is everything okay? What's up?

She heard the groginess in his voice and felt a sharp spike of guilt. Undebatably he was getting little sleep these days and Katarine felt wrong for taking this from him. She suddenly felt foolish, sitting here on the call like this. What had she been thinking?

"Uh, yea. I'm sorry I woke you... I...."

She what? Suddenly she didn't even know what to say. She liked Connel and she was glad they were friends again but they weren't exactly close, at least not call each other in the middle of the night close. Not that she was that close to anybody anymore.

"You know.. just on assignment and wanted to hear a friendly voice..."

She winced at the stupidity of it and pushed off the wall she had been leaning on. There was a liquor store down the road and honestly that was where she should have gone first instead of this pathetic phone call.

"I'm sorry I woke you."

Okay, she was completely lying.

There was something going on with her. Maybe she was on assignment, but this was the sober version of a “drunk dial”. While he was not going to push the issue, Connel sat up and lightly scratched Buster behind the ear.

2pwZ0kc.jpg
Don’t be sorry, I’m glad you called.

Blinking his eyes wide so that he could get the “sleep” out of them, he went on. Now… in regard to my question… is everything okay?

She felt a wave of relief when he said he was glad she called. At least she hadn't upset him. She was walking down the alley with the comm unit pressed to her ear, ignoring those walking around her. Someone was coughing in the distance and another person pulled their hat tight over their ears as a chilly wind swept through the alley. Her boots splashed through puddles as she headed towards the neon liquor sign like a moth drawn to a guiding light.

Now… in regard to my question… is everything okay?

"Uh yea... I just..." She sighed and closed her eyes, catching the lie that was about to come from her lips before it could escape.

"I've just hit a wall in the investigation and I dunno. Just..."

She stopped walking and leaned once again against the cool brick of a building in the alley.

"Do you ever just feel... alone?"

She sounded silly and groaned.

Well… ask and ye shall receive…

They had basically had this conversation before. It was not a good one as though they got a long great he actually put stock in the “Master/Knight/Padawan” dynamic. Something instilled in him by his father. Of course when they had spoken he was not “himself” so it was a different dynamic. He was too concerned about being the perfect knight and protector, rather than expressing his true feelings. He was unable to connect with her on a deeper level, and so they drifted apart at the time.

Though there was the question.

2pwZ0kc.jpg
All the time. It was worse when I was doing the “Guardian” thing…

Though he did not feel a sense of “weakness” or anything, Connel never enjoyed being “vulnerable”, after all, though he was better than he had been in the past, he was still a loner in a manner of speaking. Which made it difficult to open up to people because he was always on guard in case someone would use his vulnerability against him. He felt guilty for not being honest with his feelings and for not being able to show her who he really was. He realized that he had missed his chance and it was too late to do anything about it. He accepted the consequences of his actions and moved on.

It sucks, but it is what it is.

Katarine could hear something in his voice, sort of a regretful understanding. She felt it too. They had danced around each other and lost what could have been but she was still hopeful she could find a true friend in Connel. Force knew she needed one.

“Well at least you have Buster. How is he? Upset I woke him I expect.”

She laughed and pictured the little wiggly dog in her mind. She was glad Connel and Buster had been reunited.

“You should both go back to sleep.”

She glanced back down the alleyway and frowned. She had felt something but saw nothing. She shook her head and pushed off the wall, pacing back and forth still clutching the comm unit.

He’s more annoyed with me right now because I’m not giving him a “T.R.E.A.T.” or going to get “F.O.O.D.” right now that we are awake and all… That is when Buster sat up, canted his head and growled. Oh man… don’t tell me you know how to spell?

That wasn’t the case, they were playing, but he could at least try and lighten her mood.
2pwZ0kc.jpg
Too late. We’re awake now and we’re going to get a snack…

Buster definitely knew that word and hopped around. You know what I said, go get your leash.

Buster wasted no time and zoomed off of the bed to the other side of the apartment to get it and back.

I’m not hanging up until I believe that you are okay.

Katarine couldn't help but smile at the interaction that was happening between Connel and Buster. She could just imagine the little doggie sitting there begging for a treat. She glanced down the alleyway again as she heard someone kick a bottle and decided she ought to keep moving before the nightly alley affairs started. She started back down the alleyway, jumping over a puddle as Buster successfully wormed his way into a midnight snack.

I'm not hanging up until I believe that you are okay.

"I'm fine. I was just ... throwing a pity party I think."
She regretted the call but she also liked that he was talking to her like a real friend and not like a Jedi Master. Maybe she should wake him up in the middle of the night more often. She looked both ways and crossed the street and entered the small convenience store. She nodded at the person behind the counter and made her way towards the back where the alcohol was stored.

"It's weird. Back in my day Jedi weren't supposed to feel a lot of emotions. I think this New Order has made me soft."

Well, this is the only day and age that I know, so I can’t speak on that… Getting dressed and grabbing Buster’s leash before hooking him up to it, he was off, his pup all too happy to trot alongside him I know what my dad would say though… he used to tell me about it.

It was an uncomfortable memory he was about to bring up as he and Buster entered the hallway headed to one of the lifts from the “Respite zone” headed down to the “Common Area” before the “Dining Hall.”

2pwZ0kc.jpg
If you ask him, one of the main reasons the “Old” Jedi Order fell was because of fear of emotions. That was the short answer, but he would go on about how even Jedi needed to be able to process emotions and feelings instead of shunning them.

Buster definitely was happy as the “Common Area” was full of Jedi and service corps either studying, meditating, or doing their job. That meant “friends” he could go say “hi” to. Bottom line, he has always believed that emotions are essential, just don’t let them control or define you.

Finally getting to the “Dining Hall” and looking around at what was available, he made his point.

In your regard, only then would you be “soft.”

Katarine had talked to Caltin about this before when she had visited the mans home so she knew Connel was right in his suggestion about what his father would say. In a way the Jedi of this day and age might be stronger because they didn't shut out emotions. Katarine wondered if she would ever be able to embrace emotions like the New Jedi Order did. She certainly wasn't suppressed and she did have a personal motto of never hide your heart, but sometimes she admitted it was hard to feel everything.

She could hear Connel getting into a lift and imagined Buster excitedly waiting for access to the dining area. She imagined if anybody was awake the puppy would go crazy and want to say hi to them all. She grinned as she pulled a bottle of wine out of the cooler and headed towards the cash register. There was a small line so she waited.

"I like this... us... talking."
She wished she hadn't called and woke him but she had to admit it was nice just to have someone to talk to. She hopped that wasn't stepping over a line. Deep down Katarine had felt a connection with Connel right from the first moment she met him. Maybe it wasn't meant to be a romantic connection given their lack of skill in that department, but she still felt like Connel was supposed to be in her life somehow. Maybe he was meant to be a friend, a confidant, an amigo that she'd never had before. She didn't know but she knew it was something. She just hopped saying that out loud didn't upset him.

"So what is Buster getting for a snack?" She cleared her throat and handed over a credit chip to the store owner.

Well then let us not wait until someone is down, or asleep to do so. This is nice. It did catch him off guard, her saying that, but it wasn’t a bad thing. They needed each other, maybe not in the “emotional” or “physical” sense, but in the connection that many Jedi of the present and the past have had. They needed to be able to trust each other, to rely on each other. It was more important that they knew they had each other's back, no matter what. And that was something they both had.

2pwZ0kc.jpg
Buster is loved by the staff here, so he is going to get anything that they think they can sneak him. He has crazy metabolism.

He laughed openly as he took his stack of griddle cakes and nerf sausage, along with Buster’s plate of… well… everything… and sat down. Buster waited until he was given the “go ahead” which was a simple “nod” before tearing into his treat.

Now… you still haven’t answered my question…

With her bag in tow she opened the door of the mini mart and started down the neon lit street. Passerby paid her no mind as they walked, bundled against the chill or drunkenly hanging off each other. Katarine pulled her jacket closer to her as she walked through the streets towards her hotel.

Now… you still haven't answered my question…

Kat smiled at his concern but she was feeling a lot better now just from talking to him. "I am now. I was just.. frustrated I think. My leads went cold and the scum I've been tracking for months slipped through my fingers. Just gets to you sometimes."

She turned a corner and waited at a cross walk while traffic flowed. There was a lot of noise even at this hour. She wondered how anybody got any sleep on this planet. "I was also just feeling lonely but you and Buster helped so thank you." She did sound more cheerful now and she decided she'd just close this leg of the investigation and regroup. Her criminal couldn't run forever right and in the meantime at least she had a friendly person to talk to.

He was listening to her, and could tell that she did feel better, but there was something else going on. Perhaps this “drunk dial” he thought it was, was leading to one? That and Buster plowed through his snack and believed it be nowhere near enough for him.

Katarine chuckled at glanced down at the bottle of wine in her bag. Was he starting to know her that well?

"I'll behave. I'm just going back to my hotel and having a glass of wine then calling it a night. I think this investigation is officially over here. I'll pick up a new lead when one turns up. Maybe when I get back to Alliance space I'll see you and Buster."

The light flashed and she crossed the street with a few other pedestrians who were walking.

"Thanks for talking to me. I hope you have a good night. Try to get back to sleep."
She still felt bad for waking him.

Katarine giggled as Buster barked. She was happy to hear the little guy. It sounded like Buster wanted to go outside after his late night puppy meal.

We will, don't be a stranger.

"Wouldn't dream of it." She smiled and they said goodnight and she clicked off the call. Her heart felt a million times lighter than it had earlier that evening. She finally seemed to be making progress with Connel. It might not be the relationship she thought it would be but she felt like they were deepening their friendship which was really important to her. She smiled to herself as she slipped the comm unit back into her pocket.

Unfortunately Katarine had been so distracted by the conversation and giddiness that she hadn't noticed being followed from the alleyway. She felt a light prick in her neck from behind and felt the tranquilizer start immediately. She gasped and the bag fell out of her hands, the bottle of wine crashing into the street.

Canto Bright wasn't a dead end after all.
