- Fast and Maneuverable: The ship comes with a powerful sublight engine and high performance thrusters that allow it to move very quickly and conduct pinpoint maneuvers as needed.
- Modified: Upon taking ownership of the Dead Man's Hand, Paxton took to modifying the ship with a series of after-market upgrades. He added a rear mounted chaff launcher, replaced the standard laser cannon turrets with automated rotary laser cannons and had two additional laser cannons and two additional missile tubes installed in the front.
- Inefficient Fuel Economy: Because of the power requirements needed for the Dead Man's Hand's increased shielding and armament, the ship consumes fuel at nearly twice the rate of stock models. This makes operating it for long periods of time expensive and difficult.
- Energy Leakage: The Dead Man's Hand leaks energy rather significantly due to the high amount of power required to operate the freighter's after-market upgrades. As a result, this ship has a powerful sensor echo that is very difficult to hide, making the use of this ship in stealth situations very difficult.
Following the battle of Yurb, Paxton Reece began to question his career as an Antarian Ranger. He'd seen too many of his friends die horribly and he was tired of fighting a war that never seemed to end, so-with the blessing of his CO

-Reece decided that it was time to retire from the Rangers and go into civilian life. With the money he'd saved and a small loan from Beltran, Reece purchased a stock model OSA-16 "Cheron" Light Freighter. He then modified it, adding weaponry and a few other gadgets until he was satisfied that the ship would serve his purposes. Once finished, he dubbed the ship the Dead Man's Hand. He then said his goodbye's and headed out for parts unknown, looking for adventure and perhaps a few credits as well.
