The Deep

The beams of filtered wove a lackadaisical path through the haze. It didn't quite have the energy to reach all the way down here. Even when the air was clear - and it rarely was - nothing was ever brightly lit. A perpetual murk. Not bland, the neon saw to that. All the signs and holographic adverts splashed bright colours across the hazy air. There was a rhythm that continued despite the lack of natural sunlight. They knew it was night despite the perpetual twilight. Nearly kicking out time in the centre of district 24C, level 1313.

Trextan didn't like places like this. The dull beats from five nearly clubs struck a discordant rhythm. The streets were becoming busy and soon they would be heaving. Every place that bad life had a balance. Every place was different and that was good. Balance here had been upset. Local gangs taking to trafficking citizens to high levels where they would be drugged up and sold. He could feel it. Over the unrestrained emotions of the dancers in the megaclubs there was a note of fear, of unrest.

He waited patiently opposite the Mynock Funk. The owners were deeply involved in the traffic. Trextan wanted to find out if they were responsible or just part of something larger. He watched and waited as the revellers slowly trickled out. They stepped out into the haze of brilliant, disorienting colour and tried to choose their directions. The owners would leave with an escort. He would follow them.
