COMBAT INFORMATION
Availability: Unique
Deployment: Limited
Strengths & Weaknesses:
+Melee: The Epirus Guard is an entirely melee unit, with no ranged capabilities. Equipped with Force pikes and phrik shields, as well a vibrosword for secondary weapon, they excell in close quarters. The small unit will usually move in formation and use this to their advantage.
+Defense: The unit has good defensive qualities with their sturdy phrik shields. This qualifies them well for protecting VIPs, form perimeters and provide cover. Particularly in close quarters, or environments that does not lend itself to be used in long ranged fighting they are a disciplined force to be reckoned with.
+Loyalty: Every soldier has gone through extensive testing and rigorous training. They have been picked from various locations, almost many hail from the military academies on Coruscant and Glee Anselm in particular. They are elite, in the prime of their life, and with proven dedication and loyalty to the cause. This used to mean loyalty towards the One Sith empire in the past, but in recent times translate to a near absolute loyalty to Darth Pyrrhus.
- Ranged: With such a heavy focus on melee engagements, the Epirus Guard is incapable of retaliating to attackers engaging them from a distance. The best they can do in these situations is to hunker down and defend.
- Primitive: While it could’ve been an easy thing to equip them with a blaster pistol or rifle here and there, they do not even come equipped with grenades on principle, leaving their purpose rather singular. In a Galaxy filled with energy weapons, WMDs and starfighters, they can appear to be a rather archaic unit by modern standards.
- Honour Guard: This unit is not capable of independent military operations, nor is it intended as such. Rarely deploying with numbers above 100, their single purpose is to serve as a bodyguard to single individuals, almost exclusively Darth Pyrrhus. They look pretty and official, but are fairly useless if not supported by other military companies.
Description: The Epirus Guard was commission on the order of Darth Pyrrhus with the sole intent of serving as his own personal bodyguard. Pyrrhus had gone into battle many times with an army at his back in the name of the One Sith. This time however, the forces’ greater aim would not be to the benefit of the One Sith Empire, but rather Pyrrhus himself. One might have said the two were connected, and so he expected little opposition as he nitpicked the elites he deemed worthy to assemble his own personal guard. After the fall of the One Sith their loyalty to empires fell away yet their function remained.
Its manpower was initially drawn from all over the One Sith Empire. A significant portion of the unit had been pulled from the elites at the Coruscant military academy. Another large amount was filled with veterans from Pyrrhus’ own Nautolan military forces who had followed him into battle time and time again, ever since the conquest of Glee Anselm. The latter were people he knew had proven themselves, people he trusted to be both loyal and efficient. The rest of the guard’s numbers would be made up from exceptional individuals sent from across the empire, both new promising prospects and veterans with suitable temperament and track records.
The Epirus Guard was indeed a private guard and not an army. Their numbers reflected this, never going above 100 in the field and only a few being able as reserves or guardsmen in training. They were molded into becoming a small elite unit that would follow the Sith Lord into battle; an honour guard capable of getting the job done and work their way out of a pinch when required. While alone they were not a force as effective as a varied army, but when combined with other military elements and inserting them into the right situations they could become truly deadly.
Perhaps the unit’s biggest drawback was their lack of flexibility. They were, after all, intended to be a melee guard. Equipped with shields (although made from phrik), Force pikes and vibroswords, the unit was rather primitive in their make-up. Yet what they lacked in that area they make up for in fields more suitable for their specialization.
