Name: The Hard Roil

Rotational Period: N/A

Orbital Period: N/A

Classification
: Nebula

Diameter: The Hard Roil is a nebular region within the Roil, at the heart of the Gordian Reach in the Outer Rim. For reference, the Roil as a whole is 5,000 light-years long and 1,000 light-years across. The Hard Roil is approximately 2,000 light-years long and 400 light-years across: it represents the most dangerous portion of the Roil.

Atmosphere: The gas composition of the Hard Roil is derived from stellar nurseries, supernovas, and stranger things. Heavy elements are found in higher concentrations than normal, and pockets of rare and exotic particles can be found. The composition of the Hard Roil is such that it produces higher gains and higher attrition rates than standard nebular prospecting.

Climate: Turbulent and energetic. Entering the Hard Roil for any length of time is a serious endeavor for qualified crews and dedicated ships. Radiation spikes, accelerated particulate waves, near-dead stellar-core fragments, star nursery conditions and other anomalies make the Hard Roil lethal to the unprepared -- and, all too frequently, the well-prepared too. Hyperspace turbulence is a significant risk: stable routes are unknown unless expensive S-thread boosters are used. Travel times within the Hard Roil generally fall within the realm of weeks, and it would take months to get from end to end, with no guarantee of survival.

Gravity: N/A. The Hard Roil, as a region of the star-system-dense Roil, contains numerous planets, planetoids, and asteroids in various degrees of construction or destruction, though few are inhabited in any serious way for obvious reasons. Future planet submissions may result.

Primary Terrain: N/A

Native Species: None known.

Immigrated Species: The nebula is home to a variety of deliberately or accidentally lethal nebular critters, as well as plenty of nuisances and minor hazards.
Additionally, Clan Rekali has a significant presence in the Roil, leading to a population of mixed Mandalorian, Dathomiri, and Vahla roots.

Primary Languages: Clan Rekali generally communicates in Basic, but a creole dialect (composed of Basic, Paecean, Mando'a, and Vahla ceremonial language) is also spoken.

Government: The Hard Roil has no centralized government, though many prospecting stations and other emplacements are part of Clan Rekali.

Population: Perhaps a hundred thousand Clan Rekali or independent prospectors and patrollers live within the Hard Roil, or in the boundary regions between it and the rest of the Roil. This number does not include potential populations of worlds that may be discovered or colonized within the Hard Roil in the future.

Demonym: Roiler, Roilmutt
Major Imports: People, ships, technology, consumables
Major Exports: Rare gases and elements, not including any restricted materials
Affiliation: Mandalorians, specifically Clan Rekali
Major Locations: None yet, though further submissions may result.

Culture
: Fatalistic miners, Force-fringe loners, would-be manufacturing barons, Vahla, witches, Mandalorians -- all kept loosely in line by a distant and ageing Clan Father. The Hard Roil is a high-risk, high-reward frontier, with all that that implies. Entrepreneurism is highly valued, everyone dreams of a little core-family prospecting ship, and most mail is handled through remote waystations with HoloNet links. The Hard Roil is both cynical and ambitious. It gives grudging recognition to Jedi and other Force traditions, but waystation commanders and ship captains tend to revoke their jurisdictional privileges when knocking heads with the burlap brigade. Religiously, some follow the Vahla religion in one variation or another, though blood sacrifice is forbidden; others follow Allyan Dathomiri traditions; others follow the Manda.

Technology: Commensurate with Clan Rekali's level of technological development, which is comparable to most Major Factions.

History: The Roil and its star systems were always difficult to explore and exploit, mainly because of the region's excessive conditions and hyperspace turbulence. The Hard Roil -- the densest, most lethal part of the Roil -- compounded all of these complications. With Clan Rekali's development of S-thread technology, in combination with the traditional Rekali skill of low-level instinctive astrogation, the Hard Roil became accessible, though not in a stable way. Hyperspace routes were only good for days or weeks before they became dangerously obsolete. Hypercapable probes, S-thread boosters, hyperspace cannons and other technologies became crucial to survival in the Hard Roil. Networks of far-flung, self-sufficient waystations began to form tenuous links between stable hyperroutes and locations within the Hard Roil. The intention was to form a skeletal structure for future efforts of exploration, exploitation, and colonization.

Notable PCs: Ember Rekali, Samael Rekali, Alec Rekali

Intent: As a means of creating a deadly frontier for exploration and colonization, close to Clan Rekali territory, while leveraging and expanding upon a massive mysterious nebula in the heart of Clan territory.

Links: None as yet.

Excellent work. The Hard Roil looks like a place I might have to go poke around in at some point.

That said, there is one area of concern.

Please be a little more specific on the rare and exotic particles. If you look hard enough, just about anything can be found in space, up to and including a giant cloud of alcohol big enough to get the entire human race drunk and keep them that way until their livers give out. Not making that up, by the way.

However, if you've got restricted materials such as beskar and phrik floating around up there, that might be cause for alarm. Not because it's improbable, but because we're not exactly supposed to let that stuff through easily. So if you can clear that up for me, or at least state there's nothing restricted out there, we'll be able to figure out how to move forward.

Thanks much.
