Jedi Temple Hangar
Coruscant

Tension grew within the command structures of the Alliance.

Alicio could practically taste it in the air, the bonds between worlds growing taut and strained. With some dark successor to the Maw growing within it's borders, it seemed all it would take was the slightest graze of a knife to snap the connections, and undo decades of progress.

They all had to do their part, to keep the Alliance together. Today, that task fell to him.

The Gift of Peace touched down within the Hangar of the Jedi Temple, alighting like a graceful waterfowl. It's exit ramp kissed the ground, letting the crew disembark, and refuel one last time before their mission. Alicio was last down the steps, his movements calm, his face severe.

As usual, the Senator was expected to have a Jedi escort, especially since this meeting would bring him close to Dark Empire space. He trusted his own guards, of course, but Alicio always appreciated having an extra warrior, and an extra diplomat, along for negotiations. Usually, he was given a heads up as to which Jedi would be accompanying him, usually one of the Nobles, or Amani, if he was lucky. But not today. And when he tried to peek ahead, the Future was vague at best, though it was... weighted with meaning.

Whatever that meant.

The King of Alderaan, dressed in simple, elegant blacks, tossed his cape over his shoulder, and observed the hangar. He supposed his Jedi attaché would simply have to be a surprise.

- Ran Serys Ran Serys -

A return to Galactic Alliance space meant a return to the duties of a Jedi Knight, so when Ran was assigned to be the Jedi Security Escort to the Senator of Alderaan she wasn't all that surprised. Her experience as a soldier and as a Jedi made her a good choice for security detail, especially one that would so closely brush up against non-friendly territory, but Ran did have her detractors. Her absence from core space was a big one. Two years was a long time to be out of the information loop and for someone with such a glaring gap in knowledge of worlds affairs and because of the delicacy of this mission Ran's debriefing was extensive. Her debriefing was so extensive that she had to engage in her own independent research, so she engaged in that research until she had reached the threshold of the Hanger.

She stopped her reading and stowed her datapad as the crew deboarded The Gift of Peace. "That is one fine starship." She said to a nearby technician that only half heard her words before he was off to some other task. She grimaced and shifted trying to shrug the awkward encounter from her synth-leathers. Once she recovered she could see the man she was to secure, Senator and King of Alderaan, Alicio Organa.

Ran approached intently. The crew watched her. She glanced at them with a small smile. They seemed a loyal and capable group. "Senator. Your Majesty," She greeted Alicio formally. "I am Ran Serys, Jedi Knight, and I have been assigned to your detail." She said in a matter-of-fact way.

The senator saw a flash of green skin from the future, and tasted a vaguely familiar presence. Alicio smiled warmly, turning his head to the side, fully prepared to greet Amani.

Instead, he saw a different Mirialan. Alicio blinked once, then found a small, but warm smile as she approached. He offered her a short bow as she used his titles. "Master Jedi. Alicio is fine."

He could have sworn he'd sensed...

"I am Ran Serys, Jedi Knight, and I have been assigned to your detail."

Well, there was no masking that shock. The nobleman's usually-restless mind went blank as he processed the collection of words, the familiar presence. But, with all the grace of a politician, he somehow managed to claw himself from his stupor, his grey eyes suddenly alighting with understanding. "Ah, thank you... Knight Serys. Your help is greatly appreciated."

"We're almost ready to embark."
Alicio nodded towards the ship, inviting the Jedi aboard. He turned, and began to walk back up the ramp, careful to keep step with Ran. "I can brief you about the mission inside." The walkways in the vessel were swooping and elegant, the small crew preparing for take-off.

"First, I have to ask... do you happen to know an Amani?" Alicio studied the Serys, looking for recognition, as they walked side-by-side.

- Ran Serys Ran Serys -

Ran blinked at the Senator. She thought him polite, helpful, and not immediately haughty or cavalier. Her thoughts on the galaxy's dignitaries were not favorable. Ran thought Alicio may be able to change that.

"Excellent." She responded as she walked beside the man and into the Gift of Peace. The starship was just as magnificent on the inside as it was out. Ran was immediately taken with it but she still preferred her Voidhuntress-Class Elite. Compact and Lethal was and would always be more her speed.

As he guided her through the elegant craft she could feel a curious thought from Alicio before he spoke.

"First, I have to ask... do you happen to know an Amani?"

She looked at Senator Organa with a quizzical look. "Amani?" She questioned. "I have a cousin named Amani. I have not seen her in two years, but I hear a lot has changed for her- for the better." She said proudly. When she had last seen Amani, her younger cousin was struggling with her place in the galaxy. Now she was a member in good standing on the Jedi Council. The world had changed while Ran had been gone, and in so many amazing ways. "Do you know her?" She asked excitedly but of course he did, he had inquired about her. "What do you know of Amani, Senator Organa?" Ran beamed.

Alicio led Ran to a small briefing room in the Gift. It had a few chairs, a table, a holoprojector, and a small station for beverages. Alicio neglected all but a chair, which he eased into, a hand elegantly tossing his cape to the side as he sat, and observed Ran.

"Amani? I have a cousin named Amani. I have not seen her in two years, but I hear a lot has changed for her- for the better."

"Mmm-hmm. So I hear." Alicio couldn't keep his mischievous smile down. "She's become a Jedi Master. And she's gotten married, and has children now, I hear."

Of course, Ran wanted to know more. Alicio's grey eyes were practically sparkling. "I first met her when we were working at the same refugee camp. She was medical staff, I was managing. We met one night, and... kept meeting, after that. We're... very close." He'd probably given himself away.

Oh well. The game was fun while it lasted.

Alicio paused, his expression warm, to see if she understood.

- Ran Serys Ran Serys -

"Wait!" Ran smiled. "Is this-" She hesitated unsure if what she was about to ask was too silly. "Are you telling me that-" She paused again but it was there. There was no mistaking it. His words, the glittery but coy look in his eyes, and the brilliantly bright look on his face.

"You are! You are Amani's husband? That is correct! Yes?" She waited for his confirmation. It was a shock. What a spectacular coincidence or was it? That another Serys would be assigned as an escort to the Royal Senator who also happened to be Family. Ran wasn't used to the word. She only spent a few hours total with Amani in their few run-ins with each other. But still she felt it. She felt the bond of family. In this moment she could feel it in her excitement. "Congratulations on it all, Senator- Sorry, Alicio," She corrected herself. "Congratulations on the marriage, the children, everything." She hugged the Senator. She had not hugged many people in her life. But she would have one ready for Alicio, Amani, and their children, whenever she was lucky enough to see them.

What was once her only living relative had multiplied into relatives. It was an honor to know it. An honor and a wonder. Ran thought of her few years traveling the unknown parts of the galaxy and felt that she had some time to make up in the core. Time she would've used spending time with family and maybe throwing down some roots of her own. She committed the idea to her memory and let go of her bear-like grip on Alicio.

"I would like to meet the children, whenever possible, and see my cousin more than anything. We will arrange that soon, but I suppose now we should take heed of our assignment." Ran composed and focused herself. "We can talk more about personal matters on the quieter parts of our journey though." She snuck in just before Alicio could explain more about their appointment, and before Alicio's men had joined them.

It was equal parts hilarious and elating to see the wheels turning in Ran's head, as she pieced together exactly what he'd meant. Despite the mission they were about to embark on, Alicio couldn't keep the easy smile from steadily growing on his face.

"You are! You are Amani's husband? That is correct! Yes?"

The jig was up. Alicio's grin strengthened. "Yes, I am." The former Count stood up tall, sensing a hug in his future, and despite his usual aversions to hugging strangers- he supposed Ran wasn't really a stranger- he indulged her, feeling the air squeezed from his lungs, and wrapping his arms around her lightly in return.

"It is really good to meet you. Amani mentioned you, on one of our first dates. I imagine she'd be delighted to see you again, Ran." Alicio sat back down, producing a datapad, and tapping on it for a few moments, before displaying it's contents.

It was a photo, of a happy little family. Alicio, with his characteristic, distantly sad smile. Amani, beaming brightly. And two children in their arms, a cauldron mix of their parents' features, down to their splotched skin tone- both partially green like their mother, and fair like their father. The young boy had more prominent mixing, with Amani's clear sky blue eyes, while the girl was mostly muted green, with Alicio's rainy day grey irises.

"Liana and August," he said, passing the datapad off to Ran, should she want to inspect it closer. "We were... blessed... with twins. Lia likes stuffed animals, and Auggie won't stop talking about starships." They were, in his opinion, the two most wonderful things in the galaxy. Of course he would take the opportunity to show them off.

Finally, Alicio's security detail entered the room. They were four dark, armored forms, moving with a fluidity and grace that seemed ethereal, unnatural. The King nodded gratefully to them, before turning his attention back to his cousin-in-law. "Alright, I suppose we should take care of business."

"Would you prefer the long version, or something more concise?"

- Ran Serys Ran Serys -

Ran took in the faces of the children. Liana and August. She committed their names to memory before she gave the datapad back. She could see how the children looked like Alicio, and still she saw Amani's face in them too. She saw her cousin's face in her memories. She wondered how Amani had changed since the last time they met. Ran didn't wonder for long though, as the sweet familial moment was soon interrupted by Alicio's personal guard.

In their armor, the guard reminded Ran of wraiths. The beings made of shadows in the dark that some cultures used to spook misbehaving children. It uneased Ran, but she thought if she knew more she would relax. She took a mental note, and would ask Alicio about his guard sometime later.

For now, she would worry about their mission. "Spare no detail, Alicio." She smiled warmly. The surprise of her family having grown in her absence still had not faded, neither had the feelings of happiness.

Alicio took back the datapad, and replaced it on his hip, a smile still shadowing his face. They would have time later to talk about their family. Family was deeply important to the nobleman, after all. By marriage or not, Ran was his kin, now.

He had so few, these days. Every one had to be cherished.

But it was time for the briefing now. Alicio gathered his thoughts. "We're going to a station, in the heart of Alliance space. We're mediating a... gathering of worlds, ringing Tython and Empress Teta. Anaxes, Foerost, Had Abaddon... Governors, senators, representatives and leaders of frightened populations. Fear threatens to break the Alliance apart from the inside, and I hope this meeting will keep us together. For just a little longer."

"The meeting is secret, invitations were only sent to a few, and the location of the ship we're docking with is heavily guarded, so... there shouldn't be trouble. But... I can't shake the feeling..."
Alicio bit his tongue, tasting ash from the Future. It could have been nothing, his vision of what was to come was hardly perfect. But, as the old adage went, it was better to be safe than sorry. "Regardless, I wanted a Jedi along to help smoothen negotiations, and make sure everyone is safe."

"And... for what it's worth, I'm glad that Jedi happened to be you, Ran."

"Questions?"
Alicio felt the rumblings of the ship beneath him. They had taken off.

- Ran Serys Ran Serys -

Ran listened intently. Despite the secrecy, she thought the mission a standard one. Jedi were often brought into the folds of political mediation and Ran noted the "we" Alicio used. Mediation and politics was not Ran's strong suit. She was good muscle and her instincts were sharper than most. That was where her strengths lied and with that she could ensure the overall safety of the gathering.

Alicio flattered Ran. The experience of being welcome was one she seldom had. But she was stuck on Alicio's feeling. He couldn't shake it, He said. It seemed, to Ran, his instincts were sharp as well. She could feel the guiding hand of the force in that moment, or at least she suspected it. So when Alicio asked any questions she could only come up with one.

"Alicio, this feeling you can't shake," She referenced. "Is it guided by the force, or is this something… simpler. A hunch?" She asked, looking for the right words.

"Alicio, this feeling you can't shake. Is it guided by the force, or is this something… simpler. A hunch?"

The senator considered the question, his hands naturally finding each other in his lap. He didn't often divulge what he was about to with someone he'd just met. But... Ran was family. "I am a seer. The future is a constant companion to me. Every... waking moment, I'm living in the now, and a few moments ahead. And... oftentimes, I receive portents of... farther." His voice had slowed with thought. It was obvious he wasn't used to speaking about his abilities. "I'm... often wrong. The Future is always in flux, and different decisions that people make affect my perception of it..."

"But I do feel something. Danger. Shadows. Heat."
He frowned. "Best to be on your guard."

After a beat of silence, Alicio sighed. "On that... grim note... Allow me to trade one question for another. Where have you been, these past years?"

- Ran Serys Ran Serys -

Ran understood. The force was with them both, but Alicio had a natural affinity toward premonition. She was jealous, but only slightly. She had a sort of danger sense of her own but nothing as nuanced as visions of the future. The man impressed her again.

His warning of the future strengthened her resolve. She would be on alert and protect the summit from said shadows and heat. The not-usually-verbose Jedi nodded in confirmation of the senator's advice.

Ran then became the target of question. A question she hadn't felt so comfortable answering. It was hard to answer. She tried not to let her thoughts betray her face. She tried to keep even.

"I made a pilgrimage into the wilds of unknown space. To where I'm not so sure. I let the force guide me and it left me with a sizable gap in my memory," She recounted with some embarrassment. "I continue to get glimpses of that time in dreams. You see portents of the future. I think I may be seeing portents from the past." She connected. "Maybe you could help me sift through these memories?" She posited the idea. It was something she would do in the future regardless of what help she had, although it would be useful to have a seer on her side. Ran thought maybe the force was guiding her to an ally, or maybe it wasn't. She didn't think too hard.

She stopped as she detected Alicio's personal guard at the door. They had news. She wondered what they'd say.

Alicio's pleasant face sharpened into something more thoughtful as Ran told her tale, one of his hands traveling the contour of his chin, covering his mouth. He, too, had been on excursions with only the Force as his guide. He had... mixed feelings, on the subject. But he'd never lost his memories to it.

"I've looked into the past before, as well." Alicio's brow furrowed. "It's always been... harder for me. And journeys of the Force are often taken alone. But if you want my help, you have it." His brow lightened a hair. "We're family, after all."

Just then, Alicio turned his head. His guard stepped through the doorway, one of them speaking in accented basic. "Your Majesty. A holo for you. From Representative Ulalek."

The Alderaanian nodded once, standing with relative grace. "Thank you." Then, to Ran. "Someone going to the meeting. I should speak with them. In the meantime... it won't be a long trip. But you can look over my notes for the meeting all you like."

"I imagine it will be... lively."

"...And furthermore, how can the Alliance keep it's promise of free and safe trade if it can't even protect it's most insulated worlds from invasion?"
A human woman in a stark black suit addressed the room. Her words were professional, but not without a bit of fear. "My constituents joined this union to guarantee our safety. If it can't promise that, what is the use of staying?"

The wide meeting hall, fit with a ovular meeting table in the center of it, armed guards at the two doors on opposite ends, and a cadre of fifteen politicians, went silent. Eyes turned to Alicio. He was more than ready for them, standing tall where others might shrink. "The Alliance does not promise invulnerability. We all understand that there is no certainty, especially in times of war. To peddle anything else would be a bald-faced lie."

"We do, I agree. The fact of the matter remains that this 'Dark Empire' is here," said a regional governor, trying to back up the senator from Alderaan. "Running from that fact will do us no good."

"Well, yes," said a Gran junior senator, wringing his hands. "But we must think of our own populaces. Distancing ourselves from the Alliance may be the best way to save our people. Is that not the responsible thing to do?"

"Perhaps it would help in the short term, when the Empire is choosing their next target," Alicio countered, still and sure. "But if all thought the same as you, if the Galactic Alliance fractured now... where does that leave us? With an ever-expanding Dark-Side cult on our doorsteps, and nobody strong enough, or brave enough, to step up to them. It is in all of our best interests to support each other."

Alicio's eyes turned naturally toward wherever Knight Serys had found herself, whether she was at the table in the thick of it with him, or at the doorway, or with the surplus guards in the adjacent room... and resisted a tired sigh.

"We are our only hope."

The promise of Alicio's help meant a lot. At that moment Ran could see how he'd be Amani's chosen partner. He was a kind man. For all the complexities their relationship might have had, at least Ran knew that about the pair. They were both good people.

Ran watched the room as Alicio spoke. He was the leader other leaders looked to. It was an interesting and inspiring sight. He had a way with words that seemed to be unmatched by others in the small convocation. When Alicio was finished several politicians regarded Ran with a look. She wondered what the look meant.

Ran had sat among the convocation in its most centrally located seat. The Jedi often were allowed a place among such gatherings. They were looked to for their wisdom. Ran might've been wise in her own way but she was not a Jedi well versed in matters such as this. She let the logic, the emotion, and the authority fall to those who took up the burden. She was a warrior before she was a monk, a spacer before she was a wizard, and so many other variations of words that came to mean Jedi Guardian. So when the politicians looked at her she said nothing, she only nodded in agreement. She was a protector of the Galactic Alliance and of the galaxy at large. She agreed with Alicio wholeheartedly. The tyranny and destruction the dark forces would bring needed to be met with a united force and a righteous cause.

She met Alicio's gaze, for just a brief moment, and gave him a private nod, one that showed him her support.

Ran showed him silent support. The other bureaucrats may have wanted something more from the Jedi, perhaps a heartwarming speech about camaraderie, or something about the Force to ease their minds. But there was none.

She wasn't comfortable being a diplomat, she'd told him that much. But her little nod gave Alicio the strength to continue. "Alright. I think it's time we iron out a solution. Each governing body here would benefit from..."

The King of Alderaan seemed in his element once more, as he began laying the groundwork for a mutual defense pact. Tying threads where he could, bringing their shared interests together, politicking. The others seemed receptive... mostly. A few gave baleful glares, ready to pounce as soon as his lips stopped moving. Alicio tried to defang their counter-arguments before they had the chance to bite, but there was still an exchange.

Point, counterpoint. It was like a duel.

So engrossed was Alicio in his rebuttal, he didn't sense as, in unison, the four guards ringing the table slowly pulled blasters from their belts, and aimed them at the backs of the legislators' chairs.

- Ran Serys Ran Serys -

As time went on the legislators' attention drew away from their surroundings and focused on the ideas before them. Ran’s focus was on the present. Safety and security were her top priorities. So when four beings moved in unison, she noticed. Their blasters were slowly equipped and aimed. They were quiet, trained, and disguised. The guillotine of danger was coming down on the convocation unless Ran could stop it.

In a fraction of a second she stood and drew her lightsaber. Her jedi powers propelled her body and mind to magnificent speeds. She was a blur, if only for a moment. An important one. Ran eyed the assassin behind Alicio and whipped her lightsaber across the room as fast as she could. Her only thought at that moment was one of protection. The saber arced overhead and struck its target true. As the saber’s trajectory bent across the room, Ran pulled her own blaster and left a burning crater in the chest armor of the assassin standing over the gran junior senator. Two of four were dealt with in a moment. The saber returned to her main hand.

The other two assassins were in shock. The cadre of politicians, dignitaries, and senators were shocked. Everything happened so quickly and Ran, a jedi knight, appeared the aggressor.

“You will not pull that trigger.” She ordered the remaining assassins. Her words dripped with the influence of the force. The order penetrated their minds deeply. The assassins shook their heads as if they were trying to escape a nightmare. “Get out of my head, Jedi!” One said through gritted teeth. They removed their blaster from the back of the governor’s chair, aimed at Ran, and let a bolt fly. Ran swatted the red laser beam back at them. The bolt crashed against the assassin’s shoulder and sent them skidding across the floor.

Then there was one. The remaining assassin resisted the mind trick and spoke. “This was just the first wave, Jedi.” The assassin’s voice changed mid-sentence and so did their shape. What was once a human in guard’s clothing became a clawdite disguised as one. “When will the second come?” Ran questioned before the sound of a controlled explosion, this one much closer, resounded outside the gathering room’s doors. Using the moment to their advantage, the clawdite activated their stealth tech, and disappeared from the naked eye. Ran tried to sense the shifter through the force but they fled before they were found.

Ran and Alicio’s comms came to life. It was the leader of House Organa’s personal protective force, the Abzu Honor Guard. Fighting could be heard in the background. More controlled explosions could be heard over the comm and through the walls. “Your Majesty, Master Jedi.” The leader addressed them both. “The convocation is under attack! A few hostiles engaged. No casualties as of yet. Get yourselves to safety. We will rendezvous with you as soon as we are able.”

Ran shot Alicio a look. It seemed to ask a question. The lives of your men or the lives of the convocation? Which one? As they exchanged, a groan sounded from the assassin struck by Ran’s lightsaber. She was alive and half blind due to her injury at the hands of Ran. “She comes with us.” Ran declared as she pulled the clawdite up to her feet.

For the first time in a while, Alicio was surprised.

Ran's quick thinking incapacitated the assassins, but Alicio didn't pay them much mind. Instead, he dove headfirst into the Future, staring into the distance as chaos erupted around the room. There were cries and shouts of alarm, but he was deadly calm, gazing into what could be. Then, he nodded.

His response to his honor guard was clipped. "Full retreat, now! Rendevous at the Gift!" Ran's questioning gaze was barely acknowledged. There was no question in his mind. The Shi'ido warriors were extremely competent, trained and expected to battle Sith, and he wouldn't leave defenseless people to die. That being said... he hoped to save both the politicians and his guards today.

"If you can't extract, we'll be back for you. Survive."

Alicio's voice cut through the questions and yells of the room, severe and confident. "We're leaving. Everyone with us, and stay close." Alicio turned to Ran, eyes sparkling with the Future. "They catch up with us again in fifteen seconds. Be ready."

Fourteen, thirteen...

- Ran Serys Ran Serys -

"I am ready. Lead us out of here, Alicio." Ran replied. Between Alicio's future sight and Ran's combat mind, she felt confident about their chances. Everyone would be safe. No stragglers. "Stay with us! Don't fall behind." She ordered and handed the incapacitated clawdite to two dignitaries hot on the pairs heels.

Twelve, eleven, ten…

She unclipped the lightsaber from her belt once again and kept one hand on her blaster ready to draw. The sound of blaster bolts and explosions in the distance quieted. Ran wondered if it meant the resolution of conflict, and if so, how did the Honor Guard perform? Ran followed Alicio down a long metallic corridor. It was more utilitarian than the dressed up halls of the station they had walked into.

The group quickly arrived at an intersection. Every direction held a corridor like the previous. All were meant for out of the way maintenance and servicing of the station. Ran let Alicio decide their route. His future sight would set them on the right path. But what did "right" mean? The knight had been guided by visions of the force before and was almost always guaranteed an even hairier situation, but she was still here. A fact she was grateful for.

Nine, eight, seven…

While Alicio sped and led the group of dignitaries, Ran slowed and herded them from behind. Both protecting the back of the pack and watching their flank. "Where are they coming from, Alicio?" The mirialan asked with some urgency.

Alicio took the lead, something dark and sleek finding it's way to the palm of his hand as he took point. The other politicians took the attack with varying stages of panic and mortal dread, but not Alicio. His life had been in danger so many times, another fight barely fazed him. All he knew was that there were innocent people in danger, and they needed saving.

Might as well be them to do it.

"Where are they coming from, Alicio?"

Alicio checked back, then yelled out. "Keep moving, no matter what! Get on my ship, and get out of the system!" Pushing through the crowd as they broke into a sprint, the King went to stand by Ran, pointing down the corridor they were fleeing from. "There. And if we can deal with them, there won't be much time for you to get on the ship."

You. Not us.

He wasn't about to leave his guards behind while they escaped. And he wasn't about to ask Ran to jump into the fire alongside him.

"Three. Two." Alicio's blade sprang to life, cold blue and violent black coloring his side. It extended towards the empty hallway, as a challenge.

"One."

- Ran Serys Ran Serys -

"There. And if we can deal with them, there won't be much time for you to get on the ship."

"You underestimate us, Alicio. There will be plenty of time. I'm sure." Ran declared confidently as she ignited her blade, a snowy white light flashed out of a seemingly rusted and worn hilt. She angled the lightsaber's tip toward the corridor Alicio had indicated. She could feel the danger, and hear the stomping sound of boots in full sprint. "Even if there isn't, I'm not leaving your side." Family and duty were two things Ran took seriously. So seriously in fact she kept herself from asking What would Amani say? She'd joke when they were finished navigating the mess.

"Three. Two." Alicio's blade sprang to life, cold blue and violent black coloring his side. It extended towards the empty hallway, as a challenge.

"One."

"Together." She said as her lightsaber hummed softly. The blade's white color contrasted the blue and black blade Alicio presented. The rustic and worn hilt Ran held aside what she deemed to be a sleek and low-profile saber. Even their sounds were different. Introspect growled as Ran's saber purred. Ran had been surprised by the sight of Alicio's saber for just a brief moment. After she believed it suited him just as much as leadership.
