Sentinels were a type of droid used by the Galactic Empire to carry out the will of Galactic Emperor Sheev Palpatine. Manufactured on the planet Vetine, these droids primarily found use as messengers during Operation: Cinder where they issued prerecorded commands by the late Emperor Palpatine to select individuals of the Imperial Military. Other sentinels found themselves programmed to serve under the Counselor to the Empire, Gallius Rax, as bodyguards.
This particular droid of the Sentinel model platform had found use in neither of the aforementioned roles. L1-V1 was programmed to safeguard the depths of Palpatine's Observatory on the planet Pillio, beneath the safehouse into the heart of the ancient Sith ruins deep in the earth. It was intended to be destroyed along with the Observatory and all it's contents during the Contingency but was spared such a fate with the intervention of Luke Skywalker saving Del Meeko.
L1-V1 remained in the darkness, forgotten by the galaxy at large as time passed it by. Erosion by the unstoppable tide of time itself impacted it's memory core, wiping all directives from it's bank as it sat in the dust for over eight centuries. Surprisingly, it's mechanical body remains in strong shape for it's age, visibly it still sits ever still among the dust and light debris covering it from the long wait.
L1-V1 was discovered by the Antarian Ranger, Beltran Rarr and Sith Master, Laevus in 864 ABY while exploring the Emperor's Observatory. It was here that it's missing directive was 'corrected and charged with enacting Beltran Rarr's will. Ever the opportunist, Laevus ensured the droid recorded limited insights of his own into the nature of the Dark Side of the Force and how to exploit it. These recordings were deemed to only play upon fulfilling certain criteria or be deleted by the droid if tampered within its memory bank. This was done to ensure Beltran's descent further into the Dark Side and tempt him to seek Laevus out for further teachings later on.
