OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
  • Intent: A method for making semi-sentient species fully sentient and thus creating more customers. Also, expanding the available options for playable characters by a metric heckton.
  • Canon Link: N/A
  • Permissions: N/A
  • Primary Source: Uplift
PRODUCTION INFORMATION
  • Manufacturer: iBorg Prosthetic Augments
  • Affiliation: Open market (please go forth and use it as you will)
  • Model: The Moro, by iBorg
  • Modularity: No
  • Production: Minor
  • Material: Nanotechnology
SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Intelligence augmenter
  • Self-propagation
STRENGTHS
  • Can make non-sentient species semi-sentient, and semi-sentient species fully sentient/sapient.
  • Variants available for mammalian, reptilian, insectoid, crustacean, and other types of carbon-based life.
  • Transmissible by contact within species, and won't jump between species without being calibrated to do so.
  • Effects are permanent after the nanotech finishes its work.
WEAKNESSES
  • Won't turn non-sentient species fully sapient, even with time or repeated treatments. This isn't Flowers for Algernon.
  • Won't work for species that aren't carbon-based.
  • Diminishing returns for already-sentient species. This isn't about turning sapients into geniuses en masse.
  • Results variable: a given semi-sentient individual may wind up with an IQ of 85 or 140 or whatever.
DESCRIPTION
Uplift has a long history. The Arkanians uplifted the Yaka by implanting cybernetic brains, for example, and Akure Executive Interstellar uplifted the Qo'saarai Tuk'ata through medical and alchemical means. Both approaches required individual medical attention. iBorg has found a better way: the Moro nanotech treatment.

The Moro is transmissible within species by contact. Given enough time, it can increase the intelligence and self-awareness of whole communities and regional populations. Once the nanotech does its work, it becomes inert and leaves the body a bit at a time.

iBorg's overworked and underappreciated ethics department gave the Moro a pass. Compared to a hand that spews trihexalon, it didn't seem like a big deal. In fact, iBorg spun the Moro as a corporate social responsibility program, a way to give back to the galaxy.

The first large-scale trials took place in communities of the Nuknogs of Sump, the wampas of Hoth, the Epicanthix, and the Mantellian Savrips - species who are commonly believed to hover somewhere around the sapience threshold. It's now possible, if vanishingly unlikely, to meet genius-level Nuknogs, wampas, and Savrips. Quite a few of them are now enthusiastic proponents and customers of iBorg.
