The Pilgrim
OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
- Intent: I can't believe we never subbed these folks - a longstanding secret society of archivists and lorekeepers.

- If I remember right, the Order of the White Lotus was a major influence.
- Organization Name: The Order of the Selab
- Classification: Secret society
- Affiliation: None
- Organization Symbol: A selab tree
- Description: Nonpartisan secret society of knowledge preservers.
- Headquarters: None.
- Domain: None. Individual Selabite Keepers live in and interact with their communities and governments in any number of ways. Their identity as Selabites remains secret.
- Notable Assets: Dozens of hidden archives across the galaxy, everything from buried vaults to secret shelves in certain libraries.
- Hierarchy: The position of Grandmaster is largely responsible for helping members help each other; the organization is effectively acephalous. Among themselves, individual Selabites areknown as Keepers. There are no divisions of rank or authority.
- Membership: Around three hundred scattered Keepers. In 864 ABY, the unaffiliated Masters Sargon Vynea and Jend-Ro Quill experienced a typical Selabite initiation. After watching them for some time, the Order revealed its existence, invited them to a remote archive, and let them learn. Both Vynea and Quill had already demonstrated deep commitment to preserving and advancing knowledge in ethical ways. Note that while many Selabites are Force-sensitive, neither Force-sensitivity nor Force training is an essential qualification for membership.
- Climate: Selabite Keepers have extreme latitude and good access to colleagues and resources. The self-directed and self-motivated thrive. Others simply aren't recruited.
- Reputation: The Order is a secret. Those who've learned about its existence have typically responded with admiration or envy. Some consider the Selabites to be disengaged hoarders - despite the fact that the warrior standing next to you could be a Keeper in secret.
- Curios: Some Keepers keep a small selab tree, or wear a stylized version as jewellery - a ring, necklace, or bracelet, perhaps. One example is the bronze selab medallion that hangs from an instrument panel on the bridge of the Wretched Hive:
- Rules: The Selabites trust their carefully curated membership to work autonomously, to preserve knowledge in ethical ways, and to keep the Order's existence a secret as much as possible. They have a variety of recognition protocols and passcodes. One ancient example, never written down:
- Challenge: "Many roots and many leaves draw strength to a single tree."
- Response: "Under whose branches all may take shelter, and all may eat of its fruit."
- Goals: Secure holocrons and other key sources of knowledge, particularly pre-Gulag knowledge. Keep the Order's existence and archival efforts secret. Provide needed information and even training when needed to preserve civilization. Provide a calling and a way to contribute that does not often involve violence or war.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION
The complete origins of the Selabites are lost to history, even the Order's own deepest records. Many members believe the Order's roots are thousands of years old. However, the Order took its modern form in the Hapes Consortium during the first decades of the Gulag Plague. Archivists loyal to various rival noblewomen developed secret protocols for preserving pre-Gulag knowledge that might be helpful in preserving or restoring galactic civilization.
At great risk, some of these archivists ventured beyond the Transitory Mists in search of records and potential colleagues. Many died from the Gulag Virus or its resultant chaos. But the Order of the Selab took root on various major worlds, and hidden archives and gene banks sprang up in secret. Some endured; some did not. More than once, they found themselves competing against an avaricious, dark-aligned society called the Raskava Order - the so-called Holocron Eaters. The Selabites largely avoided conflict, keeping their existence and archives as secret as possible. Failed or fallen Selabites proved a special risk, particularly when they defected to the Raskava. Some Selabites relocated often, taking new identities. In other cases, the two rival orders engaged in bitter contests of memory erasure and recovery, sometimes with tragic results.
Galactic civilization reemerged around 830-835 ABY, and far-flung Selabites began to connect with each other. Under Grandmasters Je'gan Olra'en and Ilias Nytrau, the Selab shared archival resources, reinforced each other's collections, and actively acquired holocrons on the galactic scene. They caught the attention and enmity of a handful of Sith Lords. After one particularly bloody incident involving the holocron of Belia Darzu, much of the Order went even further underground. It has kept a low profile for over a decade at this point.
