Velok Brokentusk
A simple fortuneteller
OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
Climb P'thakar's proud height
Find the Elder's monolith
Shiver a blade from the stone
Bind its haft in your hair
Walk three nights to the place of red rocks
Let the chrysalis embrace you
Cut yourself free and consume it
- Instructions from Velok the Younger to those who wish to gain the Pelt of Gruuta in the Temorzhai Ridge.
This alchemical ritual is a rite of passage designed to fortify Whiphids against extreme cold (such as their frequent use of CryoBan in quantity) without sacrificing the mental toughness they develop in frigid environments. Beings of other mammalian species can undergo the process as well, though they may have trouble cutting their way out of the alchemical chrysalis and eating all of it.
The retired Sith scholar Velok the Younger developed the ritual as a derivative of classical chrysalide transformation. The ritual marginally fortifies the body and skin, but its dominant focus is a cold resistance so profound that subjects have been known to walk through CryoBan detonations and break free of carbon-freezing. The main point of the ritual, though, is to give Whiphids greater survivability in subzero climates and emergency situations. This is part of Velok the Younger's long-term plan for his people. He sacrificed his health permanently to create this ritual, and is largely homebound as a result.
