People thought Tatooine could be a cruel dust-ball of a planet? Jakku could be just as worse. The heat, the people, and the fact that you had to do whatever it took to survive made it just another black spot on the galaxy that any decent people knew to avoid. But some didn't have the luxury or the choice.
Kanis finally emerged from out of the wreck of one of the old cruises left behind during the many battles that took place on Jakku. Thanks to Clunk, her faithful gonk droid, she was able to figure which pieces of scrap were more salvageable than others. Due to lack of sight she relied on him for many things. The pieces weren't as many as the last few weeks and already Kanis knew this would mean less portions for the day. Every little bit helped though. That's what her mother always reminded her. Every little bit...
Kanis eventually returned to the junction station where she had to clean the parts. Clunk stayed nearby for her when she was ready to walk, she using both him and her own personal walking stick, made from scrap metal, to maneuver. It was worse with the sandier areas of the planet, Kanis never know where anything was or how near or far she was from anything. Most of the time it was Clunk's warnings or movements that keyed her into what was going on around her.
Standing in line for more portions Kanis could hear the others around her. More people like her, trying to make a living on this rotten planet. Some however took pleasure in keeping those like her down, bullying them and showing them they were in charge; Kanis always joking about the little ones making it a height issue. While blind she could hear a lot around her. The people trying to stay quiet while their breathing was intense, the man in the junction box calling for the next in line while saying how many portions were earned, the scarps of metal as people still cleaned their parts. She could near paint a picture of all around her.
When Kanis finally came up to line the man in the box, looking at what she'd brought, said "One half portion."
"What?" she responded. "But yesterday this was worth two."
"Yesterday I didn't already have half of these parts." he sneered. "One half portion."
Even Clunk seemed to object before Kanis insisted "That's not enough. I need to trade some portion for my droid's battery charges."
"Then unless you can find someone willing to share, or who gives a Gundarks behind, get out of here!" he yelled, calling for some of his men to take her away.
Despite this Kanis began to struggle, no one jumping in to help. She didn't expect it anyways. Most people here only looked out for themselves.
