Darren Brunswick
Dead Senator
One dominion after another. One by one, the Galactic Republic was growing both in size and population. Since the end of the Four Hundred Year Darkness, countless worlds and star systems had joined the Republic. As the Republic continued to expand, Brunswick believed, that there had to be a law that regulated how annexation of planets were to be carried out, and how the annexed were to be treated. Upon clearing his throat, Brunswick moved his pod forward to the center of the Senate Chamber. He saw the faces of senators representing planets across the Republic. Some were gazing at him with polite interest, some others with a bit of annoyance. The Kuati senator had gotten that looked ever since his proposed anti-slavery legislation passed by a slim majority.
"My fellow senators of the Galactic Republic!" began Brunswick once the Chancellor had officially acknowledged him to speak. "I can proudly say before you that our Republic is expanding! We've conquered and annexed countless star systems into our democracy, and have successfully brought peace and prosperity upon many people in the Galaxy!" said the Senator of Kuat with a smile. "While it is absolutely delightful that so many planets are joining our goal towards peace and democracy, I believe that it is important for us to create a law that guarentees the rights and freedom of those that are annexed." The Kuati male paused to breath before continuing. "As you may see in your pod's monitor, I have drafted a legislation that I would like to propose before you here today. Please, consider it and give me your thoughts and comments on it."
The 'Rights of the Annexed' read as the following:
- noting the expansion of the Galactic Republic through dominions / annexations,
- believing that a law that guarentees the rights of those that are annexed or conquered will bring continued freedom and peace in the Republic,
- and thus this law hereby states:
- that the Galactic Republic will officially recognize the pre-existing planetary government and its authority over its planet,
- will not force upon these planets the deletion of their culture or tradition,
- and that the planet will send a senator or a representative (either chosen by the planetary authority or elected by the people) to represent their planet in the Senate
The senator gazed around the Senate Chamber, awaiting comments and questions that would surely come.
