- The Somberlane was modified specifically with performance in mind - the ability to maneuver quickly and make fast getaways. As such, the Somberlane is a nimble beast, boasting very impressive improvements to speed and maneuverability at sublight speeds. Also with an upgraded Class 0.8 hyperdrive, the vessel's hyperspace capability is nothing to sneeze at, either.
- Gren has marginally improved upon the VCX-820's already impressive offensive capabilities. In addition to the stock armament, he has installed seismic charges to aid in escape measures. The Somberlane is designed to get in and get out before anyone knows Gren is there, but if sticking around and putting up a fight is necessary, it's more than capable of punching back at an enemy.
- With a WhisperThrust engine installed, the ship has mild stealth capabilities which make it difficult to detect by sensors at low sublight speeds.
- The ship's heavy modifications to speed and agility are especially taxing on the craft's fuel consumption. In fact, the Somberlane wasn't designed at all for prolonged sublight engagements and its high-performance speed and maneuverability can't be sustained for long (>20 minutes) without needing to refuel. If it can't destroy an enemy quickly and a hasty escape is impossible, something has gone horribly wrong.
- The ship's navicomputer is a total mess. Because he can navigate space himself, Gren hardly ever uses it, instead usually preferring his access to the Paths, and as a result, never updates it. Therefore, should Gren ever find himself unable to call upon the Force (and therefore his navigating abilities) the Somberlane will effectively be unable to access hyperspace. It goes without saying that anyone else who tries to pilot the ship won't get very far with a neglected navicomputer.
- Any sort of quick maneuvering will make the ship detectable to sensors, as the WhisperThrust can't prevent this.
Once a derelict VCX-820 freighter bought from Sidra Ater 's scrapyard on Tatooine, the Somberlane is a smugglerss dream. Any self-respecting spacer would salivate over the modifications Gren Blidh has made to the ship after purchasing it, turning it into a speedy devil that maneuvers like butter. The Somberlane was designed purely with Gren's illicit smuggling and piracy operations in mind; get in and get out, before anyone is wise to his presence. If a fight must be had, the ship has certainly not slouched on its own offensive and defensive capabilities, a few notable modifications being the addition of seismic charges used primarily to cover an escape, as well as the installation of a NEEDLE remote slicing unit, which Gren often uses to disrupt the systems of victim vessels. However, the ship is highly personalized to Gren's own particular quirks, the almost complete lack of operational navicomputer being a notable drawback. Perhaps it's a point of pride that Gren never bothers to update it as a failsafe, instead preferring to rely on his own mental abilities.
