Work In Progress The Tail End Legion

OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
Intent:
A belated attempt to codify a major part of Xeykard’s story and give some lore to a minor player in the Sith game.

  • Brief note -- I'm going to be putting both army and a bit of naval stuff here. Just want to keep it in one sub. I am not a codex or factory fiend.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Army Name:
Tail End Legion.
Classification: Legion/Remnant Forces.
Affiliation: The Sith Order; Inquisitor Xeykard.
Army Symbol: A grey symbol of the Sith Empire, marked by three slashes.
Description: The Tail End Legion is not a true legion of the long-defunct Sith Empire in any official capacity; instead it was the unofficial name for the remnant forces consolidated under the Inquisitor Xeykard. Originally formed from the remaining Sith Legionnaires and crew aboard Xeykard’s ship, the Red Rain, after their escape from Imperial space into the Scar Worlds, it expanded to a much greater size as a variety of forces pledged themselves to Xeykard throughout the course of his campaigns in the Scar Worlds. Now that the Inquisitor has joined the Sith Order and Darth Carnifex, the formerly rag-tag remnants have rapidly become more organized and better equipped for conflict in the current era.

SOCIAL INFORMATION
Headquarters:
The Tail-End Legion’s primary force is currently anchored above Utapau, Xeykard's nominal fief, having commissioned several defense platforms around the world. However, the true headquarters is the Crimson Terror, a Marr-class Star Destroyer that has served as the Legion's flagship for nearly two decades. It often travels to Dromund Kaas, or in orbit of Elom, where the Legion also has some presence.
Goals: Serve the Sith Order, but particularly Xeykard's interests. For a considerable period of time, that was retaking the Scar Worlds for the Sith Empire -- but that dream has long since passed. Now, the Legion is in the service of the new Grand Inquisitor, rooting out traitors, rebels, and Jedi, in defense of Sith space.
Reputation: Generally terrible; a half-step above the outright evil surrounding them. A remnant of an old order, they represent a dying breath of a fallen empire, now resurrected. Within the Order, Xeykard's reputation as a skilled commander and deadly warrior stem from his long combat record -- one built on the back of the Legion which he leads. He would not be where he is today without them, and though their praises are rarely sung, they are an experienced and competent force in all aspects.

COMPOSITION INFORMATION
Army Size: Large. The rough count puts their numbers close to a Sith army group, but the attrition of desertion, the openness of this new era in the galaxy, and constant combat thinned their numbers. However, with the addition of the Gormak irregulars from the Voss campaign, and some limited recruitment from Folende and now Utapau, the Legion is back to full strength.
Composition: Though now under new management, the Legion retains the organizational structure of the old Empire -- of course, with the exception that most still call it a legion, despite being better classified as an Army Group.

  • Naval Element: While the Legion often works with elements of Sith naval forces, they do operate their own naval detachment. Military vessels were a rare commodity in the days following the collapse of the Empire; the warlords of the Scar Worlds learned to be careful with their naval resources, and Xeykard was no exception. Most of the ships the Legion has retained are from that time, though refitted with the latest technologies and weapons.
    • Sample Detachment: Legion Command Section, IQ-N-002, "Intergalactic Relations"
    • Sample Detachment: Legion Deployment Section, LN-D-014, "Heck Submergers"
      • Alongside naval combat forces, a significant amount of the Legion's vessels are concerned with deployment of ground forces. The "Heck Submergers" are often tasked with transporting Xeykard and his personal forces dirtside.
  • Infantry Element: Infantry make up the bulk of the Legion's forces. Their composition varies greatly, given the different environments, purposes, and levels of experience the disparate units in the Legion had originally. Xeykard, though instilling a base level of skill and discipline, has mostly cultivated that diversity and cross-pollination of tactics, leading to a number of flexible units, and a few key specialized ones.
    • Sample Detachment: 1st Legion Shock Section, IQ-P-001, "Tailnippers"
      • No amount of berating or disciplining has knocked this name out of the mouths of its legionnaires. These are the hardened veterans, the vanguard core of the Legion's primary force, often working directly with Xeykard. Many among them have been with him since the days of the old Empire. Never have they been prouder to serve. Like their commander, they are first in, last out.
        • ~5000x Legionnaires
          • Standard Equipment: Sith-Imperial Legionnaire Combat Armor Mk. III, "Judicator" Adaptive Battle Rifle
          • First Cohort, "Represcue": Veteran core with command elements attached; often carrying portable shield generators, additional communications equipment, along with two companies equipped with stealth field technology.
          • Second Cohort, "Talonted Two": Two assault companies replaced with additional heavy weapons units, flamethrowers, and mortars.
          • Third Cohort, "Battle Bus": Gravchutes, jump packs, and jetpacks. Often deployed from airborne transports.
          • Fourth Cohort, "High Rollers": Additional heavy ordnance for anti-vehicle, -starship, or -defense operations.
          • Fifth Cohort, "Swampers": Additional reconnoissance equipment and sniper teams.
    • Sample Detachment: 5th Gormak Auxiliary Legion, Second Cohort, GM-V-005-2, "Ka Krushers"
      • During the time of the Empire, Gormak auxiliary units were an occasional feature on the front lines of their many wars. The peace with the Voss was often shattered, and the Sith took advantage of that rift to bring aboard a new, energized pool of recruits. The Ka Krushers were originally the fighters of clan Nak, among the last to retreat with Xeykard from Voss. Since then, their horizons have broadened, their discipline improved, and their aggression honed to a deadly edge.
    • Sample Detachment: 8th Legion Shock Section, Third Cohort, IQ-C-008-3, "Skywalkers"
      • This Cohort of legionnaires was originally assigned to the world of Corbos, tasked with keeping down any revolts or resurgences of the leviathans that emerged from the Sith mining of the world. Their experience on fighting at high altitudes, utilizing high ground and fighting against it, earned them the tongue-in-cheek name "Skywalkers" -- they stand above the monsters they fought.
    • Sample Detachment: 9th Legion Shock Section, Second Cohort, IQ-C-009-2, "No Knockers"
      • One of the few Legion units to have been newly formed by Xeykard. Key veterans and officers of the 9th Section had seen most of their combat in the Third Imperial Civil War, specifically holding key points on Muunilist and Bastion, but ultimately suffering heavy losses. They were reassigned to recruit on the opposite side of the Empire, but the war was lost before they could complete their task. Xeykard picked up a small core of these legionnaires from a shadowport off the Sith Worlds, and inspired (and ordered) them to complete their assignment. Drawing from several disparate units under Xeykard, as well as some light recruiting in the Scar Worlds, the 9th Section returned to full strength, their veteran core raising the standard for the less experienced soldiers around them. Their specialty is urban warfare -- never again would they be crushed like they were against the New Imperials.
  • Armoured Element: Though armoured units are not uncommon within the Legion, their size and organization is minuscule compared to other formations. After the collapse of the Empire, a smart lieutenant with a couple of tanks could take and hold a sizeable town on many worlds -- armoured units by far fractured the most, leading to most of those pledging service to Xeykard to be no larger than company sized. After some retraining and joint operations, Xeykard managed to instill a certain level of coherence to his armoured units, but a spirit of independence and competition has not been quashed. The Legion's armoured units are highly motivated by intra-group morale and histories, and while so far this has allowed Xeykard some success, larger armoured actions are often more difficult to coordinate.
    • Sample Detachment: 6th Legion Armoured Section, First Cohort, First Company, AU-C-006-01-01, "Death Metal"
      • This company comprised the command section of a larger armour formation that clashed with the New Imperials during the Third Imperial Civil War. It collapsed along with the Empire, but their now-deceased commander managed to keep his key officers in line and held nearly an entire continent on Folende for a year, until joining Xeykard's forces with the promise of better supply lines and a return of order to the Scar Worlds.
        • 14x Warblade-type Medium Repulsortanks
        • Additional support vehicles
        • 1x Platoon of Legionnaire scouts, utilizing scout speeders for reconnoissance
    • Sample Detachment: 10th Legion Armoured Section, First Cohort, Second Company, AU-C-010-01-02, "Big Steppers"
      • This unit formerly served under Xeykard's rival warlord, Generalissimo Darjos Morcar. Morcar, a humanocentrist, had purged non-humans from his military forces and subjugated those under his rule. The "Big Steppers" laid low for the most part, not revealing the fact that a quarter of their number were non-human or near-human. By operating at the edge of Morcar's space and doing a few technical tricks, they managed not to face any repercussions for it, and quickly pledged to Xeykard's service when they heard he was in conflict with the other warlord. They were essential in bringing down Morcar's defenses at Chandaar.

MEMBERS
  • 1 Lizard.
  • Fir-Vib, Major General in command of the Gormak Irregular portion of the army, and perhaps the oldest living Gormak in the galaxy. Fir-Vib is a sharp tactical mind, and manages Xeykard's relations with his Gormak troops, advising him on their needs and expectations.
  • Admiral Topen Cemek. Originally the captain of Xeykard's ship, the Red Rain, Cemek's persistence in the Grand Inquisitor's service has seen him ascend to a much higher station -- though he often laments he might rise further still, were he to leave the Legion. Yet, he does not.
  • Major Loyitt Derrs. Another among Xeykard's initial command, Derrs' loyalty is unquestionable. He heads a cohort of hardened legionnaires who are often assigned under Xeykard's direct command in battle -- first cohort of the first Legion section, "Tailnippers".
  • Major General Vaice. Once led Derrs and his current cohort under close supervision by Xeykard; now, in his old age, has stepped back and serves a primarily advisory role for the legion.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION
WIP -- originally had this all in the description section, but this was a lot of yapping.

Because of the nascent nature of the legion and the lack of support from a larger entity -- particularly the bureaucratic infrastructure of the Sith Empire, which could both organize and supply a vast number of units at its peak -- the chain of command was, for a long time, nebulous at best. While the power of “supreme commander” was vested in Xeykard, the loyalty of the remnants was often tenuous, and he mostly refrained from ordering any major operations, leaving command of most units up to their local commander. The structure of the legion was then more comparable to the mercenary armies of the Thyrsian Sun Guard than the legions of the Sith. Individual units are often required to provide for themselves in terms of pay and resources, leading many to turn to mercenary work. Leveraging the Sith name and their superior technology and training, most Tail End soldiers earned good pay as hired guns in the Scar Worlds and the wider region of instability with the decay of the Silver Jedi Concord, the Empire, and the Ashlan Crusade.

A wide mix of remnant forces pledged themselves to Xeykard’s goals, meaning the quality and equipment of an individual soldier varies wildly. However, most units figured out how to play to their strengths, whether it was access to heavier vehicles or weapons left behind by the Sith, or merely the combat discipline and tactics instilled during training that allows them to operate on a level higher than the various rebel or mercenary units they might contend with.

In actuality there was a limited cohesion between these units. The main draw of Xeykard was that he was a warlord who gave few direct orders to his subordinates, and thus a perfect superior for Sith-Imperial soldiers who wanted to keep their small bits of power without the strict organization of the other primary warlords of the Scar Worlds. Surprisingly, this made desertion quite uncommon within the Legion; these soldiers, most conditioned for years under the Empire’s strict training regimens, found a taste of freedom quite satisfying. Most used the opportunity to abuse their power. Raiding, pillaging, and “taxing” of small communities was common.

The disconnectedness of the units served a second purpose; keeping his active military force low allowed Xeykard the freedom to appear relatively harmless in the eyes of his old Sith masters and the greater powers of the Empire, Concord, Ashlans and Alliance.

Despite the diversity of forces within the Legion, there is a distinct lack of actual Sith. The majority of Sith in the region disappeared at the Sith Empire’s fall to join one of the many offshoots, particularly the Sith Order. Those that remained almost immediately consolidated their power and started killing each other; Xeykard was no different, and now there are no rivals for him within Legion space.

Later conflicts in the Scar Worlds granted the Legion a significant new addition to its core. After the defeat of the Legion at Voss by Ashlan forces, Xeykard withdrew, and with him a significant force of Gormak soldiers, who hoped to escape retribution from the Crusade for their continued war against the Voss. The Gormak’s martial culture has given them an intense respect and loyalty for their warlord, who they refer to with the honorific Shannok – literally “great lord” in Gormak.

With Xeykard once more pledging allegiance to Darth Carnifex, and by extension the Sith Order, the Legion has once more joined Sith ranks. However, Xeykard’s station has allowed them to retain many of their freedoms, while also granting them new privileges. The greatest change in this vein has been updating their equipment to the most advanced modern weapons, ships, and vehicles.

The Legion’s name comes from an old in-joke from Xeykard’s original crew – the Sith had left them behind, and now they were at the Empire’s (and Xeykard’s) tail-end. More recently, however, the more optimistic and loyal legionnaires have taken it to mean they will follow their leader anywhere. Xeykard inspires a healthy amount of loyalty from the units closest to him, as he often leads by example, and is tactically careful enough that the legionnaires trust that he will not waste their lives – a far cry from their past Sith masters.
