A device fixed to the top of the nav computer hummed to life, triggered by the ships activation, acknowledging two things. The first: Someone was taking data; the second commands had not been entered to stop what happened next.
Something clicked behind Rel, a holoprojecter whirred to life.
“Su cuy’gar Rel.” The image of Mia Monroe flickered to life behind him, her voice echoing, expression full of fatigue, eyes full of emotion.
“I figured you’d come out of your hiding place at one point or another...There’s a part of me that wanted to rig the ship out of spite...though i’m not sure if that’s me or the remnants of Velok. Things started to get hazy after you disappeared, I stopped being able to tell the difference between what was me, and what was a product of his memories.”
The image blinked, tears of anger and sorrow welling in her eyes. “If you’re getting this message, likeliness is that I’m dead...or captured. If I’m captured I’ll soon be dead, so what does it matter. It’s no more than I deserve…”
A sniff, a hand came up to wipe her face. “I spent this whole time, trying to justify what I did. Trying to give reason to madness, to tell myself that convincing Ijaat to drop the bomb was necessary, that it was to clean out the rot. Worked for a while too...until Galeth. I laid eyes on our son and all the lies melted away and the truth of it all was laid out to bear.” her voice cracked. “I killed thousands...maybe even millions just because I could. I became everything I hate...everything we fought against…How do you apologise for that? How do you fix that?”
She ran a hand through her hair, sucking in a deep breath, eyes closing breifly as she tried to control her emotions.
“I’m not coming back. Not for you...not for our son.” A sad smile crossed her lips.
“He’s beautiful, by the way. Looks like you...got my eyes though.” a bitter chuckle escaped her “Feth...you should have been there. Should have seen him yourself.” Tears carved tracks down her face. “I tried to find you before all of this, but you didn’t want to be found. You ran, just like you always do when it gets too much and you left me, when i needed you most. Ten karking years of carrying that bastards memories with me, you of all people should have known how much damage it was doing.” A flash of anger crossed her face
“You left your son behind and that’s on you. Manda willing, you’ll never set eyes on him. Last thing he needs is you. He’ll be safe, loved and have a life better than you or I could ever provide him with. And that’s all you ever need to know. And if you are stupid enough to go looking for him, know that his family have been warned about you. You won’t find any trace of him here, he wasn’t born on this ship.”
A few beats passed, as Mia wrestled with her emotions, wiping angry tears from her face and trying to find the emotionless part of her that she wore into battle. “The Veil is yours, along with all its contents. There’s a case under the bunk, codes for it are the coordinates of our meteor. There’s some things in there you’ll find interesting I’ve no doubt.
“Feth, I hate you so much for leaving, things could have been so different. We could have...I could have... ” the words seemed to fail her. She shook her head.
“For what it’s worth, I’m sorry. For everything. I know why you left. And as angry as I am...” A fresh wave of tears crept from the corners of her eyes.
“Ni kar'tayl gar darasuum, Galeth. Now and always. I hope you find happiness again.”
