- Army Name: Grand Army of the Kainate
- Classification: Standing Army
- Affiliation: The Kainate
- Army Symbol: Symbols commonly associated with the Grand Army are ones utilized by the Kainate government itself, such as the Sith Eternal crest, the Sith sunburst, and the Kainate Mortis crest. These emblems were emblazoned on fabric banners and painted onto vehicle chassis, as well as worn as articles of clothing in the form of badges and armbands. However, the Grand Army has created its own symbol that it uses more frequently than all the previous symbols combined. It consisted of a red Sith Eternal crest centered within a square white diamond with white isosceles triangles on each side of the diamond, all of which rested on a two-tone red background. The upper two-thirds of the background was a darker shade of red than the lower one-third, the former of which was the same shade as the Sith Eternal crest. All of these shapes, save for the Sith Eternal crest, were trimmed in black.
- Description: The Grand Army was the Kainate's principal surface force, used to prosecute land-based operations and to police occupied worlds. It was formed from the remnants of the Sith Empire's Imperial Legion and the strand-cast armed divisions previously employed by the Kainate, with the majority of the army's lower echelons comprised of these artificial soldiers while officers and high command were primarily naturally born men and women. Each member of the Grand Army was instructed to display total obedience to the ruling class, particularly towards Darth Carnifex and his family as part of the cult of personality which personified Eternal Rule. Adherence to this ideology was enforced through the implementation of Loyalty Commissars that proliferated through every level of the Grand Army.
At the head of the Grand Army was the Warmaster, a unique rank that was distributed to a single individual at the discretion of the Dark Lords. The current holder of the title of Warmaster was Brutus Mallear, a long-standing devotee of the Zambranos that had risen through the ranks over several decades of service. The Warmaster held complete authority over the Grand Army and served on the Kainate Ruling Council. They could grant ranks, remove them, and appoint commanders as they saw fit.
Like the military organizations that the Grand Army had been formed from, there existed a strict hierarchal system of ranks that followed thusly: Trooper, Sentinel, Corporal, Sergeant, Junior Lieutenant, Lieutenant, Senior Lieutenant, Captain, Major, Lieutenant Colonel, Colonel, Senior Colonel, Major General, Lieutenant General, General, and Lord General. Each rank was adorned with their own plaque insignia which could display what position they held at a glance, as well as armbands depending on their rank grade ranging from; Non-Commissioned Officers, Junior Officers, Senior Officers, Flag Officers, and High Command. Each rank was also in possession of the appropriate code cylinders that contained coded information about their bearers and granted them access to secure areas within the Kainate.
The majority of the Grand Army's High Command are former officers of the Sith Empire's Imperial Legion, who helped guide and shape the Legion during the seventeen years the Empire was functional. Many of the Legion's innovations and reforms played a hand in informing the composition and doctrine of the Grand Army, with the latter sharing many similarities with the former. The smallest organizational unit of the Grand Army was the Triad, comprised of two Troopers and a single Sentinel. Three Triads formed the backbone of a Squad, which was led by a Sergeant who promoted one of the Triad leaders as a Corporal to act as their second-in-command.
Two to three Squads made a section while five Squads formed a Troop. Two Troops formed an Echelon and two Echelons formed a Company. Four Companies formed a Cohort and four Cohorts formed a Regiment. Two Regiments formed a Brigade and two Brigades formed a Legion. Four Legions formed an Assault Group and four Assault Groups formed an Army. Four Armies formed an Army Group and four Army Groups formed a Command Army, which was the largest unit structure within the Grand Army.
The Grand Army followed strict adherence to refined combined arm doctrines, with all large-scale formations featuring a harmonious blend of infantry, mechanized units, and fast-moving armor. Emphasis was placed squarely on the outcome of missions and operations rather than how they were achieved, with any means of victory pursued on all tactical levels. Because of this, low-strata and mid-strata officers were allowed greater operational flexibility in the pursuit of victory and to a certain degree could operate semi-independently from larger formations.
Supplementary droid and other automated battle platforms were incorporated at every operational level, their roles varying depending on the size and scope of the unit they're assigned to. Company-level units utilized droids to fulfill supply roles, act as auxiliary personnel, and serve on heavy weapon teams. Assault groups employed an entire Legion of automated troops overseen by a small cadre of organic officers for use in attritional operations. Officers routinely made use of astromechs and protocol droids to smooth inter-unit administration and bureaucracy, with more senior officers maintaining their own dedicated droid staff.
The Grand Army's tactics were based around mobility, with entire units being rapidly deployed from orbit to deliver powerful strategic blows followed up by mechanized maneuver warfare. Combat doctrine was arrayed in such a way that made it difficult for the Grand Army's enemies to react to a continually shifting front, with static tactics actively avoided and discouraged among all combat units. When conditions are preferable, the Grand Army will attempt to engage in a single battle of annihilation against the enemy. A battle of annihilation can only be waged against an enemy that is maneuvered into a position for total destruction, resulting in the loss of every enemy combatant.
If victory cannot be achieved within a certain timeframe after the initiation of the conflict, then the Grand Army will pull back into orbit rather than engage in a protracted war of attrition. Efforts will then be taken to re-analyze the battlefield for a follow-up strike with the intent to finish what the first battle could not. If conditions are ultimately unfavorable within detailed parameters, then the Grand Army will fully withdraw rather than commit more units to a battle deemed too costly.
- Headquarters: Malsheem
- Goals:
- Prosecuting atmospheric and ground-level combat operations on behalf of the Kainate.
- Garrison occupied planets.
- Enforce martial law where applicable.
- Venerate the Eternal Father.
- Reputation: Due to the hermetic nature and intrinsic secrecy of the Kainate, not many in the wider galaxy possess an awareness of the Grand Army's existence let alone its capabilities. Among the Kainate, the Grand Army is viewed as revolutionary and cutting edge in terms of doctrine and equipment. However, because the Grand Army has yet to be fully battle-tested, its exact limits and strengths have yet to be observed and quantified. Combat statistics held over from the Sith Empire give a simulated potential of what the Grand Army is capable of, but until the Kainate maneuvers its Grand Army into operational duty there is only data to speculate from.
- Army Size: Huge
- Composition:
- Standard Grand Army troopers came in an array of specializations and weather-specific variants. Each of these different classifications was crucial in diversifying the Grand Army's composition so that it was capable of tackling any challenge set before it. These troopers were ubiquitous across all levels of the Grand Army, filling every niche and performing every role that was available.
- The Grand Army also contained many ancillary sub-organizations that helped supplement the mainstream combat units and other standard organizations:
- Administration ensured that the logistics of the Grand Army were maintained and bureaucratic order was achieved, although it was viewed as less glamorous than combat duty.
- Army Air Corps was a sub-section of the Starfighter Corps that was permanently affixed under the command of the Grand Army and was primarily utilized for supplementary ground support roles.
- Army Armor Corps contained the skillfully trained personnel that operated the Grand Army's fleet of surface vehicles, such as walkers, tanks, and speeders. The Armor Corps also performed in anti-armor support roles.
- Army Artillery Corps was a sub-unit of the Grand Army that specialized in operating artillery pieces as supplements to baseline Grand Army combat units.
- Army Engineering Corps was responsible for building and maintaining infrastructure while undermining enemy fortifications wherever possible.
- Army Intelligence was a branch of the Grand Army that was charged with espionage, subterfuge, and encryption to further military objectives.
- General Maintenance ensured that every piece of equipment utilized by the Grand Army was kept in working order, and repaired those that were not.
- Maritime Division was tasked with conducting operations within aquatic and semi-aquatic environments and controlled a fleet of surface ships like aircraft carriers, waveskimmers, and submarines.
- Medical Corps was a branch of the Grand Army filled with medical personnel like nurses and surgeons who repaired injuries both on and off the battlefield.
- Military Police was a law enforcement agency within the Grand Army that was responsible for ensuring that military personnel upheld the laws of the Kainate.
- Special Forces Command was an elite branch of the Grand Army that engaged in high-risk clandestine operations.
- Warmaster Brutus Mallear - Supreme Commander of the Grand Army
- UX-0626 - Junior Lieutenant
- SF-3335 - Trooper
The genesis of the Grand Army was wreathed and mystified by conspiracy. The earliest origination point came in 844 ABY at the conclusion of the Akala Crisis, as the influence of the Force waxed and waned from Light to Dark and vice versa. Kaine Zambrano, who then was known as Darth Vornskr, Darth Prazutis, and Taeli Raaf entered into a secret alliance and endeavored to bring about the total end of the Jedi through clandestine means.
The first part of this grand plan was to infiltrate the Jedi Order from within, which was undertaken by Taeli Raaf masquerading as a Jedi Master for the better part of a decade. The second part was the creation of armed forces undyingly loyal to them, a force that knew the enlightenment of the Dark Side and nothing else. After much deliberation, both the Zambranos and Raaf concluded that in order to amass a force quickly they would need to fabricate one through scientific means.
In order to accomplish this, the trio scoured the galaxy for suitable donors. Some divulged their genetic sequences willingly, loyal allies to the cause of the Sith, while others had to be harvested forcefully. In the end, they had amassed a diverse bank of genetic strands that could lay the foundation of the Grand Army.
In 850, Kaine Zambrano, now christened as Darth Carnifex, embarked on a journey to rebuild the Sith Empire in the Tingel Arm. He surrounded himself with likeminded Sith Lords that had no inkling of the dark projects lurking beyond the border of known space, and with their consent, he made himself the sole Dark Lord of the Sith of the galaxy. As the Empire grew, so too did the resources for the Grand Army. New genetic strands were harvested from the very citizenry of the growing Empire, millions of unknowing donors used to expand the scope of the Army.
Improvements in the cloning process and refinements in their mental conditioning continued as new generations were bred and discarded every few years. With each new generation, these strand-casts became more and more fanatically loyal. Independent thought was stripped away over time, with the newest soldiers predisposed to suicidal devotion. Over time, the programming inherent in the strand-cast's creations would degrade as they experienced more of life and the galaxy. To counteract this, each batch of strand-casts would be rotated through conditioning processes that would stunt their growing independence and render them as they were when they were born.
However, there were a few strand-casts that were allowed to retain the budding personalities. These soldiers would be elevated as the first officer corps, commanding their fellow strand-casts and granted more self-autonomy. This would gradually give way to more autonomous thought as the conditioning process became more and more stable, ultimately ridding the need for reconditioning except for the most unusual of cases.
The Sith Empire would come to an end in the year 867 ABY, though the Grand Army would continue to propagate in secret. The majority of the now-defunct Empire's military was rallied together by Carnifex and Prazutis, assembled beyond the purview of the galactic powers to become part of the Kainate. The veteran soldiers and officers of the Imperial Legion now became the seasoned warriors of the Grand Army, their collective experience and expertise amalgamated to inform the new generations of strand-cast soldiers in the art of warfare. Many of the Legion's strategies and tactics were adopted by the Grand Army, which reformed itself along Legionairy lines.
With the galaxy thrown into turmoil by the unrepentant advance of the Bryn'adûl hordes, the rise of the Brotherhood of the Maw, and growing political tension between the existing governments, the Kainate remained in the shadows to watch and wait. There would come a time when the Grand Army would be unleashed. It was spoken with hushed revelry among the strand-casts whose entire existence was attributed to this eventual goal, while the battle-hardened soldiers of the former Empire carried on with the smoldering embers of bitterness and resentment in their hearts.
In time, they would correct the great error and seize their destiny.
