Private There Comes a Reckoning

The hallowed halls and chambers of the Temple showed little evidence of the brutal invasion several months prior. Certainly, restoring the Temple had been a priority. Amber eyes took in the temple structure, even as he gauged it's atmosphere. While the structure seemed to have recovered, the Cathar Jedi could sense a lingering somberness in many he passed. Memory of that day exacerbated a thorn that pricked his side for, as the enemy stormed Coruscant itself, he was not there, not planetside at least.

After his devastating defeat and humiliation by a Master of Ren at Tython, a terrible darkness fell upon Taam. He had returned to Ahch-To, convinced his failure had rendered him unfit for Jonyna's love. There, among the Jadeites at the First Jedi Temple, he once again sought renewal. While Master Ike was not there at the time, friends Taam had made ministered to him. With both kindness and hard truth, Taam began to become restored. Then the call came, that barbarians were at the gates, Coruscant was under attack.

Leaving immediately, the journey from the Unknown Region was too long to arrive in time to join the defense. His ship, the Pride, was damaged attempting to penetrate the Dark Empire's blockade, but he was able to join up with the Prosperity. Manning a starfighter, he joined the ship's escort.

After the battle, Taam returned to his wandering. Jonyna had served valiantly, just as he knew she would. Her valor earned her many more accolades and promotion. He even heard rumors that she had a new love interest. Having moved on, and with much good in her life, Taam remained distant. He excised his demons, rising from his self-pity and exile renewed in strength and purpose. But his consience would not allow him peace. He had amends to make.

His boots made little sound as Taam tread the Temple halls. His formal jedi robes swayed slightly at his steady gait. Taam was to meet someone important, and he intended to present his best. It was an audience with a member of the Council he sought, a private meeting regarding private business. Stepping aside into one of the numerous meeting chambers, Taam strolled to the arched, transparasteel windows that looked out over the city. He drew in a deep breath through flared nostrils, exahaling a cleansing breath. He thought he caught a whiff of a familiar scent. The one he sought.

Master Jonyna Si, member of the Jedi Council.

It had been a long day for the Sentinel of Harmony. With the roll out of two new Venators, she had spent the day filing paperwork, and plotting the reconstruction of Iridonia after it's brutal civil war had finally come to an end, with the help of the Alliance. The cathar had often used her habit of wandering the temple halls as a way of ponder her duties, brainstorm to herself of how to solve problems. Much of the work was a matter of the right approach, as the jedi didn't necessarily have to follow the bureaucracy of the alliance government.

Today, she wandered for her own sanity. Si Tech had funded her own personal projects before, but never something of this scale. A single star destroyer could put some companies under by it's lone construction, but she wanted two. Two! Madness, and yet she had asked for it. Still, her next project promised to bring that revenue back. It had to-

She paused, middle of the hallway, standing there as...

Just down the hall, staring her in the face...

Her ex. Not one of heartbreak, but of confusion. Taam hadn't really explained why he had left, even if Jonyna had been left with her own suspicions. One day, Taam had simply...left.

It had led to many things. A closer friendship with Valery Noble Valery Noble after a drunken night letting her emotions hang bare, her confusion at Taam's disappearance eating away at her. A romance blooming between her and Jenn Kryze Jenn Kryze , partly out of Jonyna's own desperation. She had so desperately wanted to find lasting love, that she took a leap that she normally wouldn't have. And now, a place on the Council. Had Taam been there with her on Coruscant, Jonyna wasn't sure what she would've been doing. Possibly not standing in defiance of the Sith's takeover of the temple on the front steps.

And now, he was back, right in front of her.

Her face went through a myriad of emotions. Frustration, sorrow, indignation. Her tail flicked with a suddenness unlike her, as her right foot tapped in annoyance.

<Taam Moghul, where the FUCK have you been?!> Was what finally escaped her lips, spoken in the language only the two of them could understand. Their own language. <I was worried sick, and left alone in that bed for months!>

She was mad.

The scent, so familiar, stirred up sensations and sentiment. Regret, guilt and shame rose like bile in his throat. But the cathar knight, having mastered those enemies within, mentally shoved them aside. Instead, the errant knight relished his ex-mate's rich scent.

He heard her, felt her, arrive. The Council member he wished to meet with was none other than Jonyna, his business nothing to do with the Order. It was about facing his mistakes. Her voice was sharp, Taam heard the ire in that voice. It wad excepted and deserved. Inhaling again, the big cathar turned to face Jonyna. His spine was straight, shoulders square. Taam's features were not defiant, nor cowering. But in his amber gaze were deep wells of contrition.

<"After Tython...I fell into a dark place."> There was no good response, no right answer. Taam knew that, and had refrained from trying to fabricate some prepared explanation and apology. He knew Jonyna, her wrath would have to vent.

<"I laid in the dust, in my blood, as that fucking Ren kicked me. My eyes met yours. You saw my utter defeat. The worst part was, he didn't even see me worth killing."> There was no more sadness or self-pity in his voice, Taam simply offered an explanation as if reciting history. <"My past failure with Kalisha, my failure in front of you, I let it break me. I felt unworthy of your love. In time I realized, it was my leaving that made me unworthy of it. For that, I am deeply sorry.">

Jonyna's eyes stared into his, as if trying to find some answer in his pupils that wasn't coming from his mouth. Their language was often one of intent, and Jonyna wanted to know if he was lying.

<...I've moved on.> She said finally, after her body language softened. <I didn't want to, but you left me without a word. No note, no midnight conversation. I wanted to punch you in the face, but...> She paused, letting a sharp breath out of the side of her mouth. <...I can't stay mad. Not at you, not at anyone. I don't like the emotion, the feeling of anger.>

She let out a huff, looking down at Taam's feet. <So what now then? We can't just go back to how things were. I've got new responsibilities, a new love...>

Sylvar, she hated feeling awkward. She was so used to being forward and just going with her gut. Right now, her gut was just as confused as her mind was.

Taam's gaze did not waver from the scrutinizing glare of his ex-mate. Jonyna's eyes were hardened azure, and he thought he saw the flicker of fire in them. She held the stare for several breaths, Taam leaving himself as open as he could to Jonyna's searching eyes. Then, the embers faded, the taut features of her beautiful face softened. Taam exhaled, having held his breath for those few tense moments.

The immediate tension gave way to the unavoidable awkwardness. The truth of her new romance did prick at Taam like a shiv between his ribs, but that too was stripped off and put away. It did no good to wallow in his mistakes, in the harm he had done. <"I cannot excuse or make up for the wrong I have done to you."> Fate and the Force were curious things. Who was to say that she would have achieved her current successes had she still been bound to him.

The ache was still there, but Taam, like Jonyna, had to let emotions wash over and past them. He still loved her. No he would respect Jonyna and allow her to pursue the path she had taken in his absence. <"But we;re surrounded by a galaxy much larger than us. The Alliance is surrounded by enemies, the Order needs every member engaged, and its leaders and champions can't affort personal distractions." His head nodded towards Jonyna as he spoke the last words, indicating her significance to the Order. <"We were good together, Jonyna, and not only in bed. We fought well together. I would like us to continue, as comrades-in-arms for now, maybe eventually as friends."> Taam proposed.

<"I have the coat and Kta Dom Lya, if you need them back."> Taam still had the armored coat and songsteel sword she had made especially for him. Taam had put them away immediately after he vanished, but had brought them out again and used them feeling it honored Jonyna.

Jonyna's eyes soften, as he spoke. He was right, they were good together. Maybe someday, she hoped, it could be the three of them, on the battlefield, Jonyna, Jenn, and Taam. The Storm, the Waves, and the Mountain.

She couldn't dare guess if they'd get along. She hoped, but she wouldn't hedge any bets.

<Keep them.> She said with a smile. <I made them for you, and they'll keep you safe. That's all I care about.>

The smile that spread across Jonyna's lips was a balm to Taam's soul. He didn't dare to consider it forgiveness, but the smile was genuine, as was the sentiment behind Jonyna's words. The gifts were made for him, and she still wished him to be protected by them. She seemed to agree, without words, that the Order, that the galaxy itself, would benefit if the two of them could put the past behind them. He didn't know Jonyna's new lover, but Taam knew his ex-mate well enough to know that person would have to be strong, capable and remarkable in some way. Jonyna didn't compromise on anything, or anyone.

<"Thank you."> The cathar male replied as a small smile touched his own muzzle. <"I was hoping you would say that."> Another deep breath was drawn in through flared nostrils, drinking in Jonyna's scent. He had missed it. <"So, who is it, this new love?"> Taam was very curious.

<Oh! Um...> That caused Jonyna to pause, blush, and take in a sharp breath. <She's uh...mandalorian. Jenn Kryze Jenn Kryze , duchess of a new group trying to oppose the Crusaders. We met on the beach, and sort of...hit it off.>

It was an odd coupling, sure. A Cathar and a Mando. A younger Jonyna would've been disgusted, horrified by the prospect.

But Jonyna had gone through a lot. Seen the galaxy. Become stronger, wiser.

Taam had caught Jonyna off guard, something truly rare. But she didn't hesitate to answer. Taam was no surprised that it was a woman, what surprised him was that it was a Mando. The cathar male chuckled softly. <"You never fail to surprise me. I hope this Mando is worthy of you." > He offered with a smirk.

To see Jonyna fight alongside her Mandalorian would be something to see, Taam admitted to himself. The resonance of jealousy was dispelled, it was unbecoming and would not color his relationship with his former mate. If she enjoyed this Mando, even loved her, then Taam would be happy for her.

Taam took a step towards Jonyna, his large fist balled up and resting on his hips. <"By the way, if you still would feel better slugging my face, I won't stop you."> a wry grin touched him muzzle.

Jonyna smirked as the taller male stepped up. <I think I'll pass. You stick around this time though, or else I might change my mind. Councilwoman's orders.>

It was a smug remark, but she meant it. She enjoyed having another one of her kind in the temple, being able to speak her native tongue.

While Jonyna and he were over, that was clear, Taam was grateful that she allowed him back into her life, in some capacity. Taam had come to the temple to make amends, and he felt he had begun to do that with Jonyna.

The cathar knight still had feelings for her, of course. Jonyna was larger than life, and she left a lasting impression on every one who knew her. But those emotions were put in their place. Perhaps, they could enjoy friendship. Perhaps, he would fight again at her side, even if that meant the Mando was on her other.

<"Yes, Master Si."> Taam replied with a grin and a small nod of his head. The title suited Jonyna. <"I won't keep you from your duties. It was good to see you."> Taam added.
