”You’re sure this is working right Akyia?” Dextra questioned. She didn’t really think anything was going “wrong”, worry was just something that developed in her natural aura now that she was in charge of something. Project Verum was a first step in growing the usefulness of The Obscurium in the eyes of Dextra’s sister Teckla Tane Teckla Tane

”Of course it worked right. The clones are viable and I followed FAE’s directions on how to alter the process for what we were doing for the Army of the Lost. You worry too much Director Tane,” Akiya had become much more calm in her duties since the death of Velran Kilran Velran Kilran her original “employer”. There was still work to be done, but much of it for now was being done under the direction of The Quasesitorum and Teckla Tane. She demanded results just as much as the deceased Emperor, but there was a bit less of an iron grip around Akiya’s throat.

Dextra was silently nodding. She had learned that the geneticist was quite good at her work, and she knew that instructions from FAE had been painstakingly followed. The “old school” clones that had been produced under Akiya’s management had performed miraculously so it was just over-thinking that had Dextra questioning things as the clones were revealed in their full grown ready state. ”They seem to look good. Just like we asked, nothing that stands out, but at the same time not obvious copies of one another…”

”Deja vu is a hard thing to dismiss when you see three of the same people walking around your town. It pretty much means something is up.” Akiya agreed with a nod. Not such a problem when you needed millions of beings to fill an army. Discretion wasn’t the highest concern when defending or invading during large military objectives.

”That one looks a bit off from your ‘slim, anonymous’ description. I mean law of averages at least one of every batch will likely stand out in a crowd…” Another scientist, Sella Harand (known in The Quasesitorum as Mechu Deru) commented pointing out a specific clone as she was tinkering with some gauntlet she was working on.

”Akiya can you give me the reports on that one?” Dextra asked politely. She knew that each of the clones had designations, but at this point in development also likely had common unassuming names as well. Perhaps even nicknames or call signs. That being the case Dextra hadn’t bothered to learn the designations that Akiya would use to pull the requested reports. “That one” was as good as she could do.

Akiya nodded, tapped her data pad and turned it so that Dextra could view it easily. ”Hmmm. Interesting. Physical marks seemed in spec during incubation,” not long ago it would have pained Akiya to refer to another being’s attributes as specs, but the cloning work she had gone through had made it second nature. She hoped it would go away as he could hopefully work with more than just clones now that there had been a regime change.

”Surprised it couldn’t be detected prior to aging,” Dextra responded with a nod of her head. ”Shame she tests off the charts for just what we’re looking for. But she just won’t blend in like we need. I’m sure there will be uses for her elsewhere. We don’t dispose of valuable assets, do we, Doctor?” There was a smirk on Dextra’s face, but the only response was a shake of Akiya’s head.

Iellax was happy to remain in the background as the sciency folks and Dextra discussed the clones. The pale, pointy eared young woman had been a part of the training of the clones from the beginning. Her experience with Sable Dawn before following her friend to the Quasesitorum was deemed valuable in making sure that the clones would be taught the necessary talents to complete the highly specialized missions that they would be sent upon. As a carrot for her involvement in what Iellax would normally consider boring work, she was offered the opportunity to become the first Verum team leader.

The surprising thing was that Iellax seemed to enjoy molding the clones into something that would fulfill their sinister purpose. She wouldn’t go so far as to say it was a bonding experience. No, that wasn’t what Iellax enjoyed about it. It was the fact that these freshly grown beings were ripe to be twisted about her finger. That she could bend them to whatever situation she needed them in to have them ready for their future. Being a Force teacher was the boring part of things, but it was worth the time put in there to get to create dishonest situations pitting one group of the clones against another.

Now it seemed the first batch of clones was ready to be unleashed upon the galaxy. Iellax would have her pick of the clones. Three would make up Verum Prime, her squad that she would lead out to kill, abduct, and breed fear. It was a glorious day. As soon as the doctors and Dextra gave the sign off. Iellax had made her choices. One of the three was the top of the class, but that wasn’t why Iellax made that choice. The last thing that Iellax needed was to be outshined by her underlings. The other two were just middle of the road candidates. That meant six and seven out of twelve, so it wasn’t exactly like they were “normal”. The other clone that Iellax chose to be part of her team was on the top of the rankings, but was chosen for a more personal reason.

As Iellax watched the clones go through a final inspection it was the pig-tailed tech girl who pointed out the outlier of the clones. Iellax’ final choice. The one that stood out when you looked down the line of the twelve careful creations. Dextra asked for the specs and Iellax began to worry. If they didn’t let this one go would that cause the project to be delayed? Would all of them have to wait until a new clone was developed and trained? Worse yet, Iellax would be stuck with three plain Jane followers.

”Shame?” Iellax grumbled stepping forward into the conversation. ”She’s my first choice Dexy. Perhaps a reason why she scored so highly. You think I’m just going to blend in on a mission?” Iellax laughed loudly. ”She’s mine. We’ll not be disposing or repurposing her. I can complete your missions with her on my team. You know enough not to doubt my drive and will. You know you can trust me to get things done. Keep that trust and let me have her.”

The attention of Akiya and Sella both whipped instantly to Iellax. Dextra was the Director of the Obscurium and sister of the Overseer of the entire order. Neither of the young woman scientists ever imagined that someone would come into this laboratory and speak to Dextra that way. Even though the scientists had found Dextra to be willing to participate in playful teasing, neither of them got the notion that Iellax was one that would make demands of the Director.

”Technically the asset belongs to The Quasesitorum,” Akiya tried to break the tension before realizing that might make the Nagai Obscurer even more angry. Akiya, after all, had no position within The Quasesitorum. The young Atrisian scientist hoped that the Director would make sure that Iellax didn’t do any damage to her. ”I’m sure that Director Dextra will hear your arguments fairly as she decides where to deploy her. While you certainly don’t blend in as you are now…” Akiya looked over the Obscurer with long pointed ears and her robes open from neck to navel in a quite risqué manner. ”However your physique is within the ‘normal’ frame. With a cloak or other manner of dress you could easily fade into a crowd.”

Sella gave a nod and then looked into her datapad hoping that none of them would look at her. As eyes slowly shifted upwards she saw the Nagai staring at her. ”This asset sticks out no matter how we outfit her. Considerably shorter than average in a human population, or most other sentients for that matter. At her heights she could possibly be passed off as a child or one of the more diminutive species of the galaxy. But…um…well…there are other parts of her that would be more difficult to blend in… Sella’s datapad shifted towards a cloning cylinder that contained the clone that was being discussed. As was the case with all the other clones still in the final stages of “completion”, this one was completely naked and floating in the human sized liquid-filled tubes. As Sella pointed her datapad at the tube a laser pointer called attention to the size of the subject’s hips and backside, which were large to say the least.

"Hey Akiya!" Dextra strutted towards the kidnapped scientist giving her a flick to her forehead. Dextra knew that Akiya was the master mind behind the Grand Army of the Lost. Which was a nice army to have when the Empire of the Lost was a growing faction but now that it controls the Tion Cluster, what use is the Clone Army now? They're nothing more than just mindless husks. "Why don't you stop criticizing what people wear? It's not like you're any different! You're conducting experiments in a dress for crying out loud!"

Dex gave a laugh at Akiya, she thinks because the Emperor is dead she has permission to speak? How cute. The Empire is under new management and that didn't mean that Akiya can relax. If anything, the real work has just begun, no more cloning stuff, it's time for more bold action. "I sound just like the Emperor," Dex thought. "Seesh."

"Are we really sticking to the Clones?" Dextra asked out loud. "I'd say we're wasting our time but I'm sure my sister would be very interested what's cooking here."
