LORRD - HOUSE THORNE ESTATE

9d66fbbf174fcc05a3eacfbf8e8c5e91f2d24abe_low.webp

House Thorne was in celebration.

Adalee Thorne Adalee Thorne , Heiress to the Thorne noble house, had returned. Circumstances were brushed over but in true fashion of the woman returning, a grand party was being held in her honor. Guests far and wide were invited, nobility to celebrities to wealthy business owners. It was important that House Thorne be seen as a rising power, that their light was not diminishing and they would soon be a powerhouse in the Tingel Arm and beyond once again.

Makai found himself here for two reasons ; one, son of a wealthy business owner and now working on his own corporation and two, he actually knew Lady Adalee Thorne in passing. Similar in age, he had met her at a few events throughout the years, although once both had reached their late teenage years they had seem to lost touch. It was fair, he had went off to university and back to work, and it was fair to assume Adalee had went to finishing school or university herself and got busy.

Adjusting his bowtie, he was waiting patiently in the receiving line to the party. In front of him was an antsy looking sorority-girl, high society type, complaining about how long it was taking to get to the front to greet Lady Thorne Apparently, all the woman wanted was a drink and to people watch, looking for an arch rival to make fun of her dress. The half-Galan looked around a little bit, trying to spot this arch rival despite not knowing what the other woman looked like. Makai made a mental note to keep an eye on the high society girl to see if any arguments would occur tonight. He doubted it, such things were deeply frowned upon at these type of events, not wise to draw negative attention in such a manner.

Should be an interesting evening.

Outer Rim - New Territories - Lorrd - House of Thorne Estate - Event: Adalee's Return

It had been months since the sequestered halls of Thorne had the youngest back in their midst. Between conquering political negotiations to securing resources from other worlds in the outer rim, Adalee had returned. It wasn't the perfect architecture she missed as much as the smell. The lavender and vanilla scents sweeping through the halls of the estate were one that reminded her of a better youth, when the only worry was the next delicious meal from Jasper the chef had conjured up in anticipation for her arrival from school. Unfortunately, that wasn't who she was anymore, she was no longer the little girl waiting for her plate. She was the grown woman, that provided the plate, that sought out more wealth for her House and that of the benefit to Lorrd. Her efforts in establishing more hospital services to those that resided among "lesser class circles," would see the difference everyday, because of the Little Thorne, Adalee.

Ironically, her return meant one thing she hated...high class social parties. Or rather "Gala's" as her mother had taught her. It seemed so odd to be among her family and friends, when the only thing on her mind was something taboo and mysterious to her. There was understanding here that made getting through this day easier. It was one simple truth. A truth, that while seemed egotistical to consider, would make enduring the occasion much more enjoyable.

That fact was that it was her day.

The things she wanted or didn't want, would be immediate. Except for the dress, which was mandatory, but her wardrobe named
"Victoria" would supply everything she needed. Her house colors wouldn't dictate her choice though and while many expected her to wear something red or green, Adalee chose black. She didn't care for statements, not when it came to attire. Although, she understood first appearances made for better representation of her house. She stood staring aimlessly at herself, hair done and necklaces of the Thorne House sitting perfectly against her pale skin.

She felt like a Thorne, but in her mind she still held reluctance. The lies that had been held behind her back made her less of a Thorne and more of an enemy, at least that's how she felt. Adalee knew she wasn't prefect, no one was...except maybe her mother, who in retrospect was truly an admirable woman. Of course, neither her mother or father would be here. Instead, it would be the House Masters, servants that weren't really treated as such, but rather family. They served the House of Thorne over decades and over time they too, had become wealthy from integrating themselves among an established house. Some chose to work for the Thornes given their reputation for making Lorrd a
"better place, with better people, for a better future." Adalee knew the saying like a song on repeat, if only that banner spoke of the lies her family held from her.

Still, all of that aside, she was ready and as Faust accompanied her down the wooden masterpiece of the East Wing, she stepped across the threshold of the ballroom. Adalee's golden eyes lowered from the large staircase dressed in small entwined vines, thorns poking from the top of the green display. Then to the large iconic symbol at the center, the crest of her childhood home and the very reputable insignia of a red rose trapped in it's own vines. She smiled, and as she bowed at the top of the steps, glasses rose in her honor. She took a deep breath and descended from her perch, Faust leaving her to greet the guest as she made her rounds.

LORRD : HOUSE THORNE

Raising his flute of vintage champagne as the heiress of House Thorne reached the top of the grand staircase, there was an air of buzz among the guest. For nobility off all non-rival Houses it meant an injection of young blood back onto the scene.

Taking a sip of his champagne, he wouldn't be surprised if half the males invited tonight were vying for a chance at Lady Adalee Thorne Adalee Thorne 's hand.

For him, it would make excellent people watching. Such was his favorite time at these things, people watching and a little chatting about gravball or mining, a few hors d'oeuvres. Surprisingly such a presence went a long way at these types of things, even if he rarely engaged the guest of honor beyond the customary greeting.

Waiting a moment, he finally joined the throngs of guests looking for an audience with Lady Thorne. It was slow going, with those two high society sorority girls in front of him.

"Lady Thorne, a vision to see. We simply must catch up soon. Mother has arranged a high tea this weekend, I trust we will see your presence?"

Makai resisted the urge to roll his eyes, instead taking another sip of his drink. He was next after all. A moment or two of more high tea talk before the two girls moved on, now whispering between one another.

"Lady Adalee Thorne. It has been awhile, I trust you have been well?"

Hand clasped hers warmly before he leaned in to speak lower.

"Didn't think you would ever return to the Tingel Arm Thorney."

A childhood nickname? Why not? Granted they hadn't been close friends but had been tossed enough together in multiple high society functions not to have known one another.

Outer Rim - New Territories - Lorrd - House of Thorne Estate - Event: Adalee's Return

With every step, she could feel the pressure of setting the Thorne standard. She knew one thing for sure as she finally landed on the ground floor with the crowd of high "snobs" and friends from across the galaxy. Most of these people weren't the decision makers she had grown accustomed to dealing with. Put her in a room with politicians and aristocrats; Adalee flourished. She wasn't estranged to these event though, she just preferred to not partake in gatherings that stipulated the wealth around her. If she wanted their money, she would do it in a more serious and formal manner.

Even so, Adalee scanned the room before she stretched her arm outward to the young women waiting in anticipation. The first youthful face was that of Claudia, of House Bathon. An established house in the technology sector, last Adalee heard of Claudia's father, he had begun a massive manaufacturing plant for starship parts.

Admirable. Adalee's mind took note of this as something that could be used later in her favor, should the need arise. A momentary lapse of blackmail came to mind. Adalee was typically above disgusting acts that played on the same level as her opposition, but when you shared the same private rooms and taverns in Lorrd's lower sector...you end up knowing things about people you shouldn't. Claudia's father, Robert; was exactly the person that found them self in that category. Adalee, didn't care for how others spent their time outside of negotaions and signing enactments that would chart the course of history. She cared about their character though, poor Claudia, she thought as she continued to the next.

Vivinne, The Lady of Tempest. House Tempest, owned every major electrical station on Lorrd and other surrounding Outer Rim planets. They had a monoply on charging every commerical building for their sources of power. Whether it was traditional methods or other means, the Tempest Family was getting paid. Adalee had been part of a coalition to prevent the monopoly from happening, but Vivinne knew nothing of it. Instead, they were close friends and despite Adalee's involvement against her own family, they had remained in contact. The only mysterious thing about Vivinne was the absence of her involvement with her family ties. It struck a curious nerve in Adalee of late. She would get her answers in time, patience was the play here.

Reagrdless, Adalee smiled, greeted her with an inapporpriate large hug that lifted the slender Vivinne from the floor to the air. The older crowd slightly gasped in surprise, but everyone was flush with excitement when Vivinne returned with laughter and a joyous squeeze.

"I missed you! Catch up later, yes!?" Vivinne said, her blue dress being sorted as the two began to part ways. But not before Adalee got the last word in response to her inquiry.

"Nothing would please me more, Viv!" The nickname slipped out, it wasn't proper, but Adalee didn't care. Friends meant friendly names.

She directed her attention to the next batch of guests. The "high tea" talk was exhausting, but she had to entertain it. She sighed and the famillar voice of an old acquaintance slid into her area of influence like a snake. The soft tone almost took her by surprise, until she heard the childish nickname.

"Lady Adalee Thorne. It has been awhile, I trust you have been well?"

She felt his hand slide onto hers, it was customary. She took note of how much smaller her hand was compared to his.

"Didn't think you would ever return to the Tingel Arm Thorney."

The sound of her old nickname made her skin crawl. It seemed no matter how grown a man got, they were still boys.

"Makai Dashiell, son of the late, great Judah Dashiell. I see we still cling to unamusing habits." Her tone was playful, but stern. He would get the message. They had known of one another for the better part of their academic childhood. It was odd that she remembered him only in her teenage years, rather than when Vivinne and her used to have play dates at the age of 6. Adalee's head tilted down toward him, she didn't want to be rude. "I'm well enough." She paused for a moment and stared at his endless blue eyes.

Trouble, is what they say. He has Pretty eyes though.

Adalee knew he was trouble, but things were always misunderstood in these high-class circles. If everyone believed half the things her opposition said about her, she'd be broke and on the street. Maybe, Makai was the same. Maybe the rumors were true. Either way, it wasn't surprising to see him here. It turned out Salacia Consolidated was part of some inner circles with her own family. The two of them standing on her household ballroom floor was inevitable.

"Forgive me, how about you Makai? Is everything well? Last I knew, you were studying Marine Geo-sciences." Adalee, couldn't remember if he ever returned to the family business. If he had, he could also be a useful resource for the future. "Or do you prefer spending your afternoon's at High Tea events these days?" Adalee smirked, her playful words hoping to reignite the boy she used to know.

Still, even as she looked at him, it was like the sun meeting the ocean for the first time. A sea of blue irises clashing against her golden, fair eyes.

HOUSE THORNE

While Adalee Thorne Adalee Thorne may not be amused, Makai very much was. To be fair, he often found his own jokes more amusing than others, his sense of humor a little odd or just plain lame. It didn't bother him that others didn't participate or appreciate the level of amusement he tried to bestow on them. Either way, there would be a broad grin on his face despite the fact her words were stern and expression looking as if he continued, she would likely deck him.

Given this was her party, Makai doubted he would be getting hit today.

"Late, great Judah Dashiell? He's not dead Thorney."

Their parents were more friends than themselves it seemed. His father lived out in the Tingel Arm even as he left for school, continuing to build the presence and reputation for Salacia Consolidated in the area. Essential, this area was their home, despite locations and work spreading across the whole of the 'verse.

He still looked extremely amused as her questioning towards what he had been doing since they last parted. That was some time ago, although they did bump into each other a few times during university at various events they had accompanied their parents to.

"Oh, I'm well, thank you. Very busy, trying to cram in as much work as possible before my wedding. Hoping not to have to work on the honeymoon but it is looking next to impossible. I'm sure there's something I'll have to respond to or handle despite having people in place. You would be surprised how slow it takes for lawyers to hash out mining rights. Governments aren't used to moving quickly I suppose."

A small pause. If given the chance, he would revert back to his overly talkative self, only this time the subject would be mining and geological surveys and the complexities of sustainable mining practices.

"How about you? Last I heard you were at University of Coruscant studying Political Theory and Negotiations. You were studying something else too, I forget. My soon-to-be wife went to University of Coruscant as well, seems all the beautiful, smart girls attended the school." A small pause and he gestured to her get up. "Looks like you've finally decided to skip the Jedi non-sense and start the process of taking over House Thorne? If so, it will be nice not to have to negotiate with all the octogenarians anymore. Might bring the average age down to seventy."

Outer Rim - New Territories - Lorrd - House of Thorne Estate - Event: Adalee's Return

"Late, great Judah Dashiell? He's not dead Thorney."

He snapped back at her with his response to his father. She had heard rumors in the universities that he was ill at one point. It spoke volumes of the misinformation being spread by many outside the wealthy houses of the Outer Rim. She was almost embarrassed, until the "Thorney" hit her once again. She didn't feel so bad for assuming such things. Everyone had their bad moment, this just happened to be one of them for her. She lightly bit her lip, her golden gaze slipping to the top half of her sockets before snapping back to his sea of blue eyes.

"Forgive me, I had-" Adalee stopped, she didn't want to rub him the wrong way any longer. "Apologies, you know how rumors go, I took my shot in the dark there. Although, I am happy to hear he is still alive. My father always said he was a good man, but a better business partner." She hoped she saved the conversation, but before she could worry about the blow back. He had confirmed his marriage.

Figures he's married.

Adalee smiled, it was great news, truly. No matter how gorgeous those eyes were, she knew the other woman had a lot on their hands.

"Congratulations, to you and hers. I'm proud for you Makai. I know we never really became close in the past, but it's always a pleasure to see when things fall into place for people like us." Adalee added the last part and realized it may have been more of statement of affirmation for herself. She didn't even know what blood ran in her own veins, it was either all Thorne...or Dirge. She considered it was both, but wanted to know how. A small part of her wished she had it together enough to be wed, unfortunately, that simply wasn't the case. Everyone grew at their own pace, she guessed.

"A honeymoon to where? Surely it's no where in the Outer Rim, is it?" He spoke of work, but Adalee decided to chime in with a small peice of advice. "No woman, would be happy with a husband that cared for work on something as important as their honeymoon. Be careful Makai and I wish you both the best."

So many people had moved on since her studies on Coruscant. It was strange that Makai knew of her tenure there. Even more preplexing was she shared the same Alma Mater. Adalee was a fantastic student even when it came to lesser subjects like Rhetoric. She had learned many things in the universities, the most fascnating of which was Political Theory.

"You heard correct. I did indeed, end up at the University of Coruscant. It was almost decided by my mother, more than me. I cherished it. Your fiance' may have been in one of my classes for all I know. What is her name?" Adalee looked over to the other guests, they all seemed preoccupied by the food and entertainment on the ballroom floor. She would eventually have to get back to them. Duties as a Thorne were "duties of the highest degree." She could hear her mother's whiney voice in her head.

She listened to him speak, in a careful way as the onlookers began to whisper around them. The last thing she needed was a label with a soon to be married man.

"Looks like you've finally decided to skip the Jedi non-sense and start the process of taking over House Thorne? If so, it will be nice not to have to negotiate with all the octogenarians anymore. Might bring the average age down to seventy."

She smirked at the end of his comment. The scary thing was he was right. The old thinking wasn't working any longer, if anything; she could argue that their outdated "traditions" were causing serious damage in Lorrd's advancement. Even the closer allies of Lorrd in the Outer Rim would suffer if it continued. Everything from her time on Coruscant had taught her about the power of words and diligence. Those were great tools, but it was the courageous willing to stand up to the societal norms that would make the world change. At one point, the octogenarians were as ambitious as her, but they had thier time. The educated youth was the flaming spear needed to fix things.

Adalee looked back at Makai.

"Non-sensical demands by my father. I studied the force closely at the University, I did it in an effort to please my father. As you can see, my parents are not in attendance. To be a Jedi is to relinquish everything about me. Maybe one day, I'll feel that invisible power. Till then, I'll be a Thorne in everyone's side. There's work to be done here and even stretching to the other side of the galaxy. I plan to be part of it all. I couldn't agree more with your comments on those that have come before us. They think because we are filled with youth that we are incapable of making the right sacrifices for people and the greater good. They're wrong, you and I both know it."

She stepped slightly back from him, straigthening the bottom half of her dress. The rare fabric swept across her foot only to reveal black heels with twinkiling, black roses at the tip of her covered toes. She tried to add space to prevent the chatter from other houses carrying empty whispers about the two of them. She didn't want to be rude and end their conversation abruptly. Adalee grabbed a hovering glass walking by.

Champagne will come the nerves. I can't just ignore the rest of my guests. End the conversation, Adalee.

Adalee tipped the glass upward as the clear liquid hit her lips, then her tongue. The sensation reminded her of sizziling candy from the local street merchants in the lower district of Lorrd. She decided...

Screw the rest of the guests...I'll fix it later.

HOUSE THORNE - LORRD

Makai waved away the apology of his father not being dead. Misinformation was real, no matter what circle one ran in. A simple conversation regarding a brief illness or accident could quickly spiral into a massive rumor. His own father had dealt it with first hand when he was a child, when tongues wagged that he was involved with the most powerful woman in the 'verse, Danger Arceneau Danger Arceneau . The truth was much more banal ; business associates turned friends, the Trade Queen stepping in to help raise him.

"No, no where here. Spilursa, near Alderaan. With the Core being the Core, we've got a backup plan but Alderaan seems to thankfully be ignored for now. As for working, she will understand, probably do some herself. Two weeks will typically lend itself to one of us having to put out a fire."

He was looking forward to two weeks of relaxation and hanging out with his best friend.

"Oh, you may know her. You probably know her mother more than likely but her name is Myra Arceneau Dashiell Myra Arceneau Dashiell ? She studied Xenolingustics and Business. The little genius graduated early, so you probably never saw her outside of the library."

Makai chuckled at the thought, unable to help poking fun at his own fiancee. He was still flabbergasted that she at least didn't hit one party during her time away at school. Socialization outside her small circle, coupled with the fact she lived off campus, most likely made for her not to be noticed quite easily. Meanwhile, if it didnt interrupt his studies, Makai was being drug to parties by his fellow fraternity members. It made up for his lack of socialization and normalcy as a child.

By now, whispers were going around the room. Adalee Thorne Adalee Thorne had to do her duty and work the party, greeting everyone, yet here she was stuck talking to a childhood friend. Makai didn't mind but he didn't want the Heiress to get in trouble with any senior members of her family nor did he want any rumors headed her way.

"I look forward to working together, I know you have great ideas." A small pause as he grabbed his own drink and noted the room. "Perhaps you can join the wife and I for dinner at our place? Discuss conquest with a much better audience."

Head inclined, gesturing to the room.

"You should do your rounds, we can meet back up and talk a little later in the evening, if you so desire?"

Outer Rim - New Territories - Lorrd - House of Thorne Estate - Event: Adalee's Return

Adalee could feel the few daggers from the other wealthy men and women in the room. She had dug herself a whole with Makai, but her attendance alone was a miracle for the Thorne Estate. All would be forgotten, once she began her rounds once more. Still, as Makai continued the conversation, Adalee listened. It seemd that the pair of soon to be newly weds would be working on their honeymoon. This was impressive to her and made her feel less accomplished in a way. Although, Adalee knew all too well the amount of powerful women that resided in Makai's inner circles. She too, would have been considered one of them, if not for her efforts alone on Lorrd. Somehow, that didn't seem to satisfy her.

Adalee didn't care for the praise and she definetly didn't feel powerful. She felt lost, her confidence is what made others spout such non-sense. Such things as banter, allowed her to leverage words of others in her favor. A gift, maybe, but to Adalee it truly made her seem more fortuidous than others, to be spoken about in such a degree that her own thoughts did not agree with.

" Myra Arceneau Dashiell Myra Arceneau Dashiell doesn't exactly ring any bells. Regardless Makai, she sounds like quite the woman." Adalee thought about the name for a bit longer before proceeding. "Arceneau, the last name is one I've heard of in the past. I'm sure my father and mother have sat at the same table as her mother." Adalee should have paid closer attention to the other high honor students at the University of Coruscant, maybe she would have known better.

"Perhaps you can join the wife and I for dinner at our place? Discuss conquest with a much better audience."

Adalee nodded. "I would absoulutely love that Makai. Maybe all three of us can come out of it with furitful endeavors."

She couldn't deny an offer like this. The Thornes had their own cycle of deals and infastructure, but this would be more of a personal advantage for her. She wanted to break away from the pack. She wanted to be the Thorne that changed "the world."

Makai began to mention the exact thing she had been worrying about the entire time, her rounds to please and greet guests. Before she could muster a breath to speak, a loud slamming came into their reality like a ball of thunder. The doors to the ballroom swung open violently, guards marching through the frame of the hallway they clearly made a mess of as they entered.

These weren't her guards. These people weren't Lorrdian. Adalee knew they didn't belong right away. She turned to get a closer look, the mirror on a distant wall providing the information she took in thus far. These were armored troopers, steel grey garnishing their backs in the form of a cape.

Who are they?

The guards split off, blocking the sides of the large staircase above, slamming their plasma torched staffs into the ground as they took position. The last two cleared their way for a red armored bounty hunter. He spoke few words to the entire crowd, frightened for thier lives.

"Meet our demands..." The voice crackled through the ventillator receptor in the helmet adorned on his head. "and no one has to die."

Welcome home Adalee, welcome home...

Makai Dashiell Makai Dashiell

"Great, I'll let her know and we can reach out with a few dates."

A bright grin plastered on his face, Makai was pleased Adalee Thorne Adalee Thorne was willing to come out to his corner of the galaxy for catching up and potential ideas on how to improve the Tingel Arm. His home would be much quieter so the three of them could speak and share ideas without drawing the attention of the 'old guard' so to speak.

About to part ways for now, his movements were stopped by a scream and the loud thundering of breaking and entering. Armored troopers in steel gray with capes. Very dramatic. Also, very expensive. Makai immediately pegged the armored intruders are either some type of private militia or a military force for a very wealthy individual. Their gear was very new, very expensive, and not something he typically saw in this sector of the 'verse.

Carefully, with small, deliberate movements, he slid himself on front of Adalee. There was only so much self-defense and hand-to-hand combat he knew, but as a gentleman, he would be remiss to leave the Lady of House Thorne exposed and to the wolves. Clearly some of his fellow men in the room didn't get the memo, it was always the loudest ones doing the absolute least.

"Thorney, friends of yours? Any ideas?" Voice was low, hoping she had an answer.

Even after studying the dramatic entrance of the red armored one, he was still drawing a blank. His company and his fathers dealt with pirates and mercenaries very regularly. Makai couldn't place these as any he had ran into before, which was the frightening part. The unknown variables that could put himself, Thorney, and all the guests in grave danger.

He would ask where the guards of hers were but that was a dumb question ; no doubt they were dead or captured themselves. Idly he wondered if it was just the typical crash the party of the wealthy, rob 'em blind, and then leave. Those he could handle. Violence and destruction? They may have to take a run for it.

Outer Rim - New Territories - Lorrd - House of Thorne Estate - Event: Adalee's Return

This wasn't good.

She didn't even recognize who they were, what they represented...or if this was a move from another opposing house. The Thornes had begun to make moves in certain sectors that could have garnered some blow back, but nothing like this. This felt different. Adalee stared to the top of the steps, trying to catch a glance of anything dignifying who they might have been.

Nothing.

This might have been the work of the miscreants in the North Sector of Lorrd from House Xathander. It was too likely though and Adalee should have known better to label everyone out to get the House of Thorne right away. She shifted her gaze around the room. These guests were some of the most wealthy, maybe it was an enemy of her enemies. This was supposed to be her "day." She may have hated everything leading up to this moment, but that didn't matter. There was real evil behind the red officers command.

Just as she tried to rack her brain for more clues to who had enough connections to follow through with a raid of House Thorne, she watched as Makai slid in front of her. His gesture was kind, but Adalee could take care of herself. Her fair eyes landed back onto the red officer as Makai's voice was a dull whisper.

"Thorney, friends of yours? Any ideas?"

She hesitated, she wanted to say the long list of those out to get the Thornes. Then she remembered some of her enemies could be in the Dashiell circles. She would keep the obvious answers to herself. These people didn't seem the type.

"I have some ideas, but I don't think they have the resources to do this..." The tone of her voice dipped low to keep others from overhearing. "It might be someone else they are after, if not, I fear they may not be here for the credits."

Adalee wanted to step out from behind Makai and demand it to stop. That could end up with people dying, she wasn't sure how serious the mysterious man in red was. All the armor was new, something that only deep pockets could have bought. Her mind told her they were paid to be here and supplied by whoever was behind this fiasco.

"There are five accounts specifically tied to very wealthy people in this room, I will say each individual name. I expect each of those with those names to step forward or face the consequences." The crimision statue finally moved, stepping down onto the first step. A bright screen lit up in front of him and he began with the first name. "The Lady of the Tempest, Vivinne!"

Adalee's heart dropped. Her breath left her and the thrum of her heart beats flooded her head. She couldn't think straight and goosebumps rose to the surface when she heard the name. A best friend from her childhood was first to be announced. Her fingers tingled and the shock was overcome by anger, her eyes like daggers stared into the helmet of the coward demanding the room to comply.

She wanted to scream out in protest, but she couldn't. It would comprimise her, make her another target and potentially cause things to get worse. Her eyes moved across the court, Vivinne's met with hers. Vivinne was calm and Adalee watched her best friend step out into the open space on the symbol of the Thorne House.

Anger to sadness. Adalee watched, choking on the final effort to hold back tears as Vivinne was dragged away.

Her voice cracked with a whisper toward Makai.

"He's lying, this isn't about money..." Adalee could feel it in her gut. "They're going to kill those five people."

HOUSE THORNE

If someone was looking to assassinate Adalee Thorne Adalee Thorne this seemed like an extraordinary amount of work and showmanship. No, this was sending a message but the question was what was the message? Trying to destroy House Thorne, to collapse it entirely? To make Adalee look like an ineffective leader? To force a takeover?

Makai knew it wasn't a robbery. Those were fairly run of the mill ; exits were blocked and groups would move in unison to strip jewelry, credits, and various other valuables such as datapads or droids. Panic was starting to ripple through the crowd as the first name was called. Murmuring of who would be next as the first girl was drug away.

"He's lying, this isn't about money..." Adalee could feel it in her gut. "They're going to kill those five people."

"Yes." Voice remained quiet, so their sounds didn't carry to their potential captors or the crowd. "I agree. I don't think they will be calling you either. This is...a grander scheme. They want to break you somehow. We need to get out of here otherwise all of us aren't going to make it, no way all of us will be allowed to live."

He was certain of that. The next name was being called out.

"Barron Finnis Primarch, of Ruuria!" A great deal of murmuring now, the crowd commenting how horrible it was for an seventy-two year old man to be called to the front. Barron Primarch took it in stride, chin up, commenting for the younger lads to 'calm down' and that he would 'go out like a gentleman'.

Makai knew this was their chance. The half-Galan grabbed her hand and put his shoulder against hers. Using his body pressure, he started to subtly push her towards the edge of the room they were in. They needed to hide behind the crowd and duck down ever so slightly, then move quickly. From there they could alert planetary authorities or muster the military or some type of reinforcements.

"Move slowly Thorney. We need to get help. You've got a secret corridor or something I hope."

Outer Rim - New Territories - Lorrd - House of Thorne Estate - Event: Adalee's Return

Adalee felt Makai’s hand, her thoughts still scrambled from the announcement of Vivinne’s name first to be called. She was almost in shock, until her heart thrummed to a beat of nervousness. This was more than just a busted in door and some low lives trying to get theirs. This was exact, methodical, pronounced in a wave of pure evil intention. Her gut rarely lied, so she told Makai the truth. These criminals were here to kill them.

For what? Adalee questioned, synapse from her brain trying to find the merit.

Were these the same people she had learned of in the past. Those that sought to imprint their mark on the world by decimating those in power. It bothered her more than she cared to admit. These unknown sects of uprising degenerates thought they could take what they wanted with little repercussion. Why, because the galaxy afforded it to them? Because they made the choices to struggle and refuse to assimilate to the prescribed society of Lorrd? These people were nothing more than cowards, forcing fate. Adalee was angry now, her home and party disrupted in the blink of an eye. People were going to die…she might die. Makai, soon to be wed…might die.

She wouldn’t allow it, but she couldn’t do anything, not here, not in the now. They would all pay for this, she would guarantee it. For the first time, Adalee felt a deep seated darkness in her. Blood flowed through her at a faster rate as she watched the Primarch Finnis being lifted and carried to the top of the steps. Maybe Dirge blood did run in her veins. She could feel Makai pushing against her, slowly moving her to the edge of the far back ballroom wall. She barely caught his words, until she heard him for the first time.

“Move slowly Throney. We need to get help. You’ve got a secret corridor or something I hope.”

Adalee looked to Makai, her golden eyes telling him all the truth he needed to know. The bright irises of the Thorne family shifted to the far left wall. A green entangled vase with loose strings hanging from it was where her eyes stopped. To pull them would open up a sliding floor board, but they would have to be swift in getting under. Seconds was all they would have before it slid back into place and locked for hours. It served as a tunnel, to the outside east wing of the estate. She wondered if they would make it, but she could already feel Makai slowly forcing her towards it.

“We will only have ten seconds, if this is going to work. We need to make sure we stand directly to the right of the vase, pull the string and rush down the steps.” Adalee informed him, her voice a soft whisper.

She felt her heels dig into his foot, as they tried to scurry to the other far end of the wall. A mistake, but luckily, Makai seemed to keep his composure. Adalee couldn’t remember the last time she attempted to use the Thorne ballroom passageway. This was an emergency, so the entire estate had intertwined safe passages for moments like right now. She hoped changes weren’t made during her time away.

The backside of her waist bumped into the corner of the stand. The vase steady as they both came to an abrupt stop. Her hand reached out for the green strings draping off the sides of the platform it sat on. The next name was yelled out through the ventilator of the red guard.

“Adalee Thorne!! Of this Very Estate!” The voice crackled again, the seeping oxygen hissing through as he demanded her name. The way they spoke seemed of the high society type, she took note of this. Her eyes widened and without thought pulled on the string.

She looked down. The floor was motionless. Nothing.

Adalee looked back to Makai, as the crowd grew louder. The red guard stomped through the core center of the crowd, before everyone made way, the red glistening behemoth of an armored suit staring them both down. Adalee grinned, maybe they weren’t going to get out of this the way she thought.

He started for them and in the split seconds of her breath leaving her, the floor beneath Makai and Adalee was no more. The hatch sank in before they were dropped onto a stone platform of darkness. She looked above, the floor sliding back into place in mere seconds. The last thing she could see was the crimson red of her potential murderer, before the stone hatch slammed shut.

It left her and Makai in a void of pitch black.

They were deposited onto a stone platform, Makai landing unceremoniously on his back with a thud. The stone flooring slid back above them, plunging into darkness. Slowly he stood up, a little shaky. His comm was in his pocket and he was tempted to use the flashlight function to find his way around. Makai hadn't told Myra Arceneau Dashiell Myra Arceneau Dashiell or anyone really, but finding his way around in low-light situations was extremely difficult recently. Even his favorite activity ; spelunking, was giving him a little trouble as of late. He was thankful he knew the corridors at home like the back of his hand, otherwise his terrible night vision coupled with a clumsy nature would have him tripping and falling over everything.

He felt a mild panic setting in. Not at the prospect of the individuals upstairs, but navigating the corridors if they started to twist and turn, or if he and Adalee Thorne Adalee Thorne got separated. Using his comm as a flashlight was out of the question ; what if there were cracks or holes and someone spotted the light? He had no idea of the layout, best to just run a hand along the wall.

Makai took a deep, steadying breath. There was no choice.

"Okay Thorney....You go first, I'll be slower."

No sense explaining. Chivalry really demanded he take point as the gentleman in this situation. He was also aware this was her Estate and she should know the way easier. Plus, if their potential captors were to come behind them through the stone piece, he might be able to hear or hold off in that direction.

Hand immediately reached for the tunnel wall, finally coming in contact with stone after inching forward. Ear picked up on the gentle swish of Thorney's dress passing him and he immediately began to follow. They had to be quick and relatively silent. Makai's goal was to escape the massive Estate home and get off grounds to get help ; had to be a law enforcement agency or military close by.

Cobwebs gathered on them as they moved as quick as possible, Thorney a good distance in front of him. Makai could feel cooler, fresher air which he knew was a sign of reaching some kind of opening. Both of their paces increased, her heels on the stone floor echoing, until they abruptly stopped. She must have reached the grassy lawn.

Lady Thorne reached the grass, but so did the armored intruders who busted up the party, waiting from them to exit.

With Makai's poor eyesight having difficulty transition from the dark tunnel to the slightly less dark summer evening, he ran smack into an armored captor. He felt a massive whack to the back of his knee, pushing the half-Galan to the ground in an attempt to hobble him from escaping. The armored captors moved in, he was going nowhere fast.

Outer Rim - New Territories - Lorrd - House of Thorne Estate - Event: Adalee's Return

Adalee couldn’t remember the last time she found herself in the deep parts of her estate underbelly. She never liked the idea of it, being potentially stuck or lost deep beneath her home. When she was younger, she wasn’t allowed to peruse the tunnels in light of the dangers it could pose. Being hurt and not found here, could mean death. It was funny how the tunnels were now being used for her survival. To get away from other dangerous outcomes.

Still, the cold rush of dead air hit her, it was nostalgic for a brief moment. Then, in her moment of remembrance she extended her arm backward. Makai could be felt now, he was right behind her. To her, there was no need for him to lead. If anything she would know these darkened halls better than anyone else. After all, she was a Thorne.

She moved quickly, step by step, until the end of the stairs met her. She tried to whisper back to Makai, but nothing was returned. He had told her he would be slower. Adalee didn’t think it would be this slow. The last thing she needed to do was be loud, so if Makai was taking his time navigating down the steps, she understood. Secret pathways were disorienting to begin with, more so with little light to help guide them.

Minutes passed and the gushing of wind from the far end of the suffocating narrow tunnel gave her hope. Knowing they would soon be in the Court of Courts made her smile. Being able to see the perfected grass and fountains springing with water would make everything a bit better.

She rushed quicker now. Cobwebs draped from one side to the other, the thick mass of them forced her face to turn in disgust. She hated bugs and insects. Adalee slashed outward in front of her, her pale hand barely visible through the delicate threads of webbing hanging from it now. She pushed through, despite the predicament. It was either spiders or death. She whispered to the force under her breath, hoping to not get bit by whatever made the webs.

Her boots pressed against the cement below, cobblestones crunching beneath her weight. They were close now. Light pierced through in wider rays before the massive stone tablet in front of them slid ajar. This was it, they had made it to the Court of Courts. Melodies of summertime teased her ears and she stepped through the brightly lit invitation with a smile.

Adalee was careful, but not careful enough. The tip of her black rose laced heels slammed into the edge of the frame. The blades of grass met her whole body as she took a deep breath. The smell of the perfect green made her eyes close. In that second, she took comfort in its ushering safety from the armored units inside. Her eyes snapped open to a loud bang, startling her comfort in the endless grass. Her head tilted upward and armored soldiers stood around her and Makai.

This wasn’t normal. Someone close to the family had to have known of the passageway. Had to have known the people invited.

But who?

Adalee’s moment of bliss turned sour, each soldier stepping in unison to prevent them from running. She didn’t want this to be the end, but the reality of the situation was she was out of moves. They were unarmed, they were dressed for a high society party…not war.

These criminals came prepared. The glistening armor of white and red showed the cost of their work. These weren’t untrained individuals, these were educated criminals when it came to getting the job done.

Another crackle and another voice, more demands.

“Get up.” The silver crest on the arm of the soldier revealed a small symbol, that of a lion. “You’re both coming with us. Don’t try anything, it will just make it worse.” The sizzle and crackle as the ventilator mask cut off hissed.

Adalee slowly rose, looking at Makai with concern. They already hit him, dropping him to his knees. Adalee’s heart raced and before she could think, she rushed her own words in response to the silver giant in front of her.

“I will comply, just leave my guests out of this. Whatever it is you want-”

“Shut it!” The heavy tone gargled through another mask to interrupt her. This soldier was adorned in red, like the previous one inside. “We don’t care.”

The crimson red blocked out the sun as he towered over Adalee. His blaster rifle slung over his shoulder before reaching for Adalee’s black hair. He gripped it and pulled upward slowly, raising her off the ground. The heavy breathing of whoever was behind the mask reminded her of being locked in a casket. It freaked her out and ultimately, she was filled with pain and dread. The pulling of her hair sent spikes of pinpricks through her neck. If she struggled, her neck could snap.

Before long, the ruby soldier lifted her to the sky, one handed.

“I should just kill you now.”

Crackles of robotic laughs resonated through the group. Lackeys that encouraged the violent actions of their superior.

Adalee winced in pain. The grip grew tighter ripping some of her locks from the root. She wanted to kick, yell, and punch her way to freedom, but she remained calm. Even now, as she was left floating in the air by her very own hair, she peered into the glistening black visor of her captor. The golden eyes that stared into it were like daggers in the night. Whoever stared back, would feel her anger, her hate. Most of all, they would feel her darkness.

Adalee whispered as she leaned as close to the crimson guard would allow.

“Then do it.”

LORRD HOUSE THORNE

He was going to die.

Makai was absolutely certain of it at this point. He would be killed outright was his sinking suspicion. His arms were held by two of the lower-tier armored guards, using their body weight to hold him down in a kneeling position. Perhaps preparing to shoot him in the back of the head execution style, grab his valuables, and leave his body on the estate.

For all her fighting, the half-Galan knew Adalee Thorne Adalee Thorne would be a pawn in a larger game. Ransom. Contractual marriage. Land holdings. Noble titles. It wouldn't surprise him if it was one or more of those categories. A noblewoman returns to her ancestral right to rule and this happens at her first introductory social event? This was well-planned, well timed...heist? Kidnapping? Murder? It was unclear.

Ever the gentleman, Makai wasn't going to go just let someone kill him. They would have to work for it. Plus, they were hurting Thorney. Maybe he can at least give her a little advantage and run. Alert planetary authorities.

"Let her go. She's willing to comply."

"Shut it Fish! This can go real easy or real difficult for you."

Arms being held, there was more than one way to move. Instead he did his best to throw his body weight towards the lackey he thought was the skinnier of the two, the one more evenly matched for himself. While knocking into the legs of his one 'guard', Makai didn't gain enough momentum in time, so it was more just pushing the skinnier one and pissing him off. Not quite according to plan.

"Just handle him, we didn't expect this one to come along."

All it took was the butt of a blaster rifle to the back of the head and the world faded to black for him, slumping face down into the ground. The second guard kicked him in the ribs, looking for a sign of moment or a groan...nothing. Picked up by his arms once again, he was drug off to an awaiting atmospheric transport.

Meanwhile, the Red Soldier had lifted Adalee by her hair, threatening to kill her. The high born slut actually thought she was clever. Like an angry kitten, the woman acted as if her angry gaze would affect him. As if he cared about her vitrol.

"I'm not done with you yet."

Hand released her hair but caught her throat. The ruby soldier was skilled. His grip was tight on her windpipe, but not enough to crush her voicebox. Alive was the order. Adalee Thorne needed to come in alive. That's why he was hired ; he was the best, the most skilled, the most discrete. Pressure increased, intent on cutting off her oxygen supply and having her pass out.

"See you soon, Lady Thorne."

Eyes rolled back, then the woman turned into a limp doll. The ruby soldier tossed her body to the ground and motioned to the lower level soldiers in this operation.

"Grab her, and let us be on our way."

Outer Rim - New Territories - Lorrd - House of Thorne Estate - Event: Adalee's Return

Adalee could feel the pressure of her head tingle with sparks of pain. If only there was some alternative way to make the pain go away, but there wasn't. The thug before her was no stranger to her. Not anymore. They were all like this. Men who fed off the control and power of others, it was pathetic that they did it in a way that was unjust. Adalee was a woman of words, sometimes cruel, but true. These men they didn't exist in her world of aristocrats and political chess. No, these armored thugs were playing checkers.

Golden rays shifted to that of Makai. Curious of her friend after being hung from her hair in mid-air. The bite of the pain was ignored, for now. She watched, Makai digging into the assistant soldier holding his arms before rising to his feet. It didn't work, whatever he was trying to do would make it worse. Fighting them in suit and dress wasn't going to get either of them anywhere.

However, words just may have.

Adalee thought on this, but the armored behemoth standing over Makai had already done the deed.

"Just handle him, we didn't expect this one to come along."

She didn't want to see what was next, but had to. The same feeling she had when Verionca's name had been called hit her stomach. Retalition would be met for Makai's little stunt. The metallic end of the handgun in their captors possession swung through the air like lightning. Adalee took note of the skill, before it slammed into the back of Makai's head.

Adalee wanted to yell out, but averted her eyes back to the poor soul restraining her in the air. Her hair continued to tug and before the stinging words she spoke brought true punishment onto her. She felt a moment of releif before the powerful steel hands of the leader slammed into her throat. the tighteness of his hand swallowed her neck whole. She gasped for a breath and her once porceilean white face began to turn red as she struggled with her whole body. She couldn't breathe, she couldn't think and the grip grew tighter.

There was a sudden shift in her airways and the pinprick feeling of the cold grasp pressed even harder. Adalee couldn't hear her own exhale, before the world went blurry and the dark void of sleep greeted her.

Unknown Location - Smelly Cellar -

Hours Later

The distant sound of dripping water woke her. The feeling of cold stone greeting her as she snapped open her eyes. The first thing was the smell. A cellar filled with an aroma of mold and iron chemical. She coughed lurching upward from the soreness in her throat. The dim lit area didn't tell her anything of her situation, instead, her sight had to become accustomed to where she was first, before anything could be determined. Where ever she was didn't matter. It was who she was, that did.

The scratchy singed feeling in her throat forced another cough, careful not to strain it any further as she tried to call out to anyone in the dark. Her voice cracked, a soft whisper as she tried to convey a louder tone.

But nothing. Was this permananent? She thought to herself. Her heart sank and for the first time in a long time she felt loss, again. She hoped it was a temporary, but she remember the grip of the soldier that took it from her. Her first thought was revenge, but she wasn't in any position to do anything, not now.

She tried one more time, before her eyes widened.

Still, nothing.

She wanted to sob due to uncertianty and silence. She was a Thorne, she wouldn't...

She couldn't.

Makai felt the cold, hard stone beneath his back. Why was he laying on his back? More importantly, why was he laying out on smooth stones in the complete darkness. Iced blue eyes popped open in the abandoned cellar. He blinked, trying to clear his vision. Nothing. It was just as dark as if he had his eyes closed. He should be able to see something, right?

Panic rose within him.Not that he was captive but because he couldn't see. Was he going blind? He had always had trouble seeing in the dark. Yet everywhere he lived at some type of lights. Even when he went spelunking or touring caves and caverns there was light. That made things easier. Yet went it was pitch black his eyes couldn't even adjust to pick up the smallest vestiges of light. It worried him. With an impending marriage, he was worried about more than himself. He was worried about Ellie and his ability to take care of her.

Next to him, a cough. Then a whisper.

Makai reached his hand out and it immediately grabbed a forearm in the dark. Slender, he could tell because his hand curled around it. Had to be Thorney, if not, a woman.

"Thorney? That you? You okay...I can't see shit." Makai sighed. "If you're not Thorney, hope you're alright either way...can you see? Is there any light?"
