- The hilt is covered in songsteel thorns that pierce the skin of any that hold the weapon. If one is not careful or specially trained to wield the weapon, the thorns will tear the hand to shreds.
The sword known as Thorne was forged shortly after the founding of House Arwyn, on Talravin. The nobles of the House desired a weapon that served as both a badge of office and a family heirloom, to be presented and wielded by Arwyns that distinguished themselves as warriors, and blademasters of considerable skill. To claim the sword, an Arwyn must prove themselves worthy of it. The thorns along the hilt of the blade serve as a warning, and a preventive measure against theft. To wield the blade, an Arwyn must prove themselves willing to sacrifice part of themselves for the family, symbolically represented by the piercing of the skin by the aforementioned thorns.
