- Bulwark: Like many other mon calamari-designed warships, the Thunderhead has multi-layered shielding which allows it to at least put up one set of shields in a given area even if some of the ship's other shielding systems are damaged or down. Combined with a reinforced frame, the Thunderhead is capable of withstanding intense amounts of enemy firepower.
- Slugger: The Thunderhead is designed to dish out large amounts of firepower, not only delegating a large portion of its reactor energy to different weapon systems, but also using larger than normal and heavier weapon systems as well. These weapon systems excel at breaking down cruisers and other star destroyers in quick order.
- Full Forward Firepower: The Thunderhead's hull shape conceptually mimics that of the classic Imperial wedge, allowing it to concentrate nearly all of its firepower in a forward arc, making it more capable of overwhelming enemy defenses.
- ECM Platform: The Thunderhead has an unusually large number of electronic warfare systems, making it ideal for disrupting enemy operations by jamming enemy sensors, communications systems, and even fire control computers and guidance systems.
- Low Agility: The Thunderhead's engines are somewhat improved to typical Ackdools, but it still maneuvers more slowly than the average star destroyer.
- Weak Rear Firepower: As with other wedge-shaped designs, the Thunderhead cannot bring much of its firepower to bear in the rear arc, with most of those weapons also being lighter turbolasers and a number of its plasma energy torpedo launchers rather than its main heavy guns.
- Extra Large Sensor Signature: Between the Thunderhead's unusually heavy use of energy weapons as well as its extensive ECM equipment, it is usually very easy to detect.
The Ackdool II-class Star Defender Thunderhead was extensively refitted to engage in protracted campaigns in the Unknown Regions. Most of these modifications included replacing the star defender's projectile based weaponry with more energy weapons, as energy could be easily replenished by the newly added fuel scoops. Thunderhead also makes much more extensive use of a variety of ECM weapons, which while often irritating to galactic standard powers, can be terrifying effective against less advanced civilizations. Similarly with a mind towards bewildering less advanced opponents, the Thunderhead also utilizes molecular shielding and retribution feedback shields. While the Thunderhead often acts as the flagships of Directorate expeditions into the far reaches of wild space, it is sometimes recalled to more civilized areas of space to reinforce Directorate interests.
