GENERAL INFORMATION

  • Group Name: Tion Cooperative Organization (TCO)

  • Classification: Trade Bloc

  • Headquarters: Tion

  • Loyalties: Silver Jedi, InterGalactic Banking Clan

  • Group Sigil: N/A

  • Description: The Tion Cooperative Organization (TCO) is a currency and customs union consisting of all planets and systems within Silver Space (excluding Tygara and Shri-tal), and some other independent systems across the galaxy.
SOCIAL INFORMATION

  • Hierarchy: Within the trade bloc, all members are treated as equal. A central commission exists to ensure that all customs procedures and standards are followed and negotiates trade deals with external groups on behalf of its members. There are also special arbiters (often Jedi) available who operate to settle disputes between members on issues like intellectual property rights, patents, mining claims, etc. The use of arbitration through the TCO is optional to settle such disputes, but members must agree to abide by the ruling of the arbiters as a precondition for their use.

  • Membership: Members sign a contract where they agree to abide by the rules of the trade bloc in exchange for enjoying its perks. Members who fail to follow the terms of the contract risk fines or termination of their membership. At any time, a member may decide to leave the TCO, going through their own internal process to initiate their official withdrawal. A grace period is provided to allow the withdrawing member time to adjust.

  • Dogma/Doctrines:

No internal tariffs between members and each member agree to enforce a common external tariff on goods and services imported from groups outside the trade bloc.

  • Individual members may not pursue any trade deals on their own. Any such deals must be negotiated through the central commission.

  • Individual members may continue to use their own currency but must recognize Credits (backed by IGBC’s Galactic Credit Standard) as a common/reserve currency.

Curios: Fancy fountain pens for signatories.

[*]
Goals: Promoting economic growth, and giving members - many previously exploited Outer Rim planets - a stronger bargaining position as a single trade bloc while still allowing political autonomy. Long term plans are to see all independent Outer Rim systems become part of the TCO to create one large trade bloc to match the economic output of the Core worlds.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION

The Tion Cooperative Organization began life as a free trade area between the Tion system and a few neighboring star systems during the late 700s as conditions in the galaxy had finally begun to stabilize somewhat from the worst effects of the Gulag Plague. Trade would begin to flourish between these systems under relaxed import restrictions, and gradually more systems within the previously isolated Caluula Sector would opt into the collective through successive rounds of trade pacts as they were attracted by the success of the venture. Over time, deeper economic integration would see the free trade area evolve into a customs union.

It was in the mid 800s that the TCO would see an explosion of growth as they partnered up with the Silver Jedi out of Voss to promote the trade bloc beyond the sector. The goals of the organization meshed well with the Silver Jedi’s mandate promoting peace and prosperity throughout the galaxy, in this case through economic development.

In the late 840s, the TCO would officially recognize the use of credits, finding it valuable as one of the more stable currency systems available.
