Suggestion Title Tag for Letters

4JZZO7a.gif

Hello, it's me, ya boy from such famous suggestions as "We should have a First Reply tag".

Lately I have been seeing some use of the article/blog section to do indirect messaging between parties. Stories that while cool, definitely deserves a tag of its own. Imagine that the articles feature is the section where the newspaper crams all their advertisements for a moment here. You have your hot singles looking for attention with their interesting stories. Companies and factions lets you know they want a new thread baker and wage slaves, and on top of that there is satirical magazine covers aplenty. With these new elements of 'indirect threading' we have a problem brought to our attention that quite frankly we should also have stolen from Chronicles while we were at it.

The solution here is a new private thread tag. Correspondence is definitely an interesting and unexplored concept, at least as of late. This would offer those who wish to write letters to do so in a much more easily contained media. And let's be entirely real, sending these secret recipes and what-not in the articles section is really like using a #memes channel on Discord to send your friend a deeply private DM.

SURPRISE ROUND:
Ask tag - A public/private thread tag for stories that are free for people to join as long as they ask the original poster or the parties involved.

Take this as an opportunity to discuss. I am very curious to see what others think of this.

On a Game of Thrones RP i did there was a section for Raven's Letters. I could be behind this though I don't think it's needed as a simple Private Thread Tag can suffice. Especially since these are not often used in reality. We merely see when they are used as blogs. Plus most people want them to have some publicity, which i think is why some people do them as Blogs rather than Private Threads.

I'm down for it, but not a necessity.

I love all of this!

'Ask' was a great way for us to encourage more writing beyond one's familiar circle.

'open' threads are chaotic and can be like jack in boxes, you'll never know when something might jump out at ya.

This lack of control and uncertainty has people putting cool ideas into privates to prevent a derail. It's affective, but you never know what cool twist you COULD have enjoy, if only someone was given a chance to ask and pitch how they'd like to contribute.

Ask is a great middle ground-- it allows the posters the ability to keep their plot on track while making new acquaintances on terms that fit the story.

At least, that was my pitch when I put it up on Chronicles. I think it would be a positive addition here too. I'm clearly bias though.

I like the compromise between Open and Private, an Ask makes it obvious that the thread is willing to accept new people (provided consent), which is assumed to be not the case of a Private thread.

And I really like the idea of encouraging the kind of letter/correspondence/hot takes RP to use those tags. Because it is RP, and it deserves a spot in our RP boards.

What does it do that Looking For Group doesn’t?

Not a fan. While Chronicles has several proof of concepts in action, I’m skeptical of lifting any concepts because it:

1) Applies pressure to a gentleman’s agreement.

2) What works for Chronicles’ may be bloat to us. The activity isn’t comparable between the two.

Ima have to disagree with you for a few a reasons:

One: Nobody mentioned Chronicles, and while Im on there and I know what you're talking about...I dont think that's what people here are talking about.

Two: Adding another title tag for private roleplays is not entirely difficult and the name itself is explanatory

Three: Letters are used a lot on Chaos, or at least the want to use, and going about the use of Blogs...gets messy. Specially with blogs being used for both OCC and IC reasons. And this is the most important reason I disagree with you, the mix of OOC and IC with Blogs. Its very messy sometimes. Sometimes its used for OOC soapboxes (raises hand) and its used for IC reactions. It would be nice to have a place to do letters without mixing the OOC and IC topics together.

Trolling aside though I’m confused. Why can’t people just make an IC thread for writing a letter? Then that can be open or private or whatever. Blogs could just be used when a company etc makes a statement and doesn’t want to entertain replies.

To be fair though I may be way behind. I’ve only recently started reading blogs and still don’t quit get them so if I’m missing something please let me know.

They don't need advertising, guys, they're literally our only affiliate.

As for the idea, I can give you this: After I finish my current project with Staff, we'll focus on the prefix game and how we can boost and evolve our interconnectivity in the community, including this idea.

I may disagree, but as always, I won't stand between the community and something I have no good reason to say no to. We can afford a lil' bloat, it'll give us stuff to axe in a year or two if it doesn't pan out.

From a writer's perspective, it's just a different kind of pitch.

When I read an LFG I'm reading an OOC outline or spiel about what the future thread might be. Similar, reading a thread prefixed 'Ask' would be the same thing but only containing the IC first post itself. To me, those are just two sides to the same coin. Which, I personally would put more weight on the IC version. Because for me it's one thing to talk about writing. To plan to make something. And a whole other ballgame to actually see somebody put that muse into words. Sometimes what you planned to do just... Doesn't always make the transition into good reading. If you know what I mean.

That said. If a saw an 'Ask' thread with 2 or more replies? I'd never join it. Probably consider it full or something. However, I tend to read LFGs with less than twelve replies to them. Or, if it was posted recently enough. Figure there is still room to join as it probably still in the planning phase or whatever.

In reply to bloat.

I think the factory and codex are bloat personally. Cool, even brilliant at times, but necessary or essential? Nah. What's another tech sub for another Star Destroyer railgun or another codex sub for another Jedi Temple Cafeteria on Stewjon. I'm glad it's there. I'm glad people use it. I'm glad it makes the game better. (Kinda like an Ask prefix would.) But, do I still think the factory and codex are 'essential reading'? Nah.

Overall.

I'd consider the 'Ask' idea as a good social experiment for the site and give it a six month trial or something. Then get feedback via a poll and go from there. 2 cents. Not a big deal imo.

Yes, Staff.

Cave to our every demand.

GIVE IN TO US.

THEY'RE ALL GOOD DEMANDS THAT WE SHOULD SPEND OUR TIME ON.

Look man stop saying "ask threads" are more worthwhile than Codex/Factory, which account for hundreds of thousands of posts and activity. I already said we'd explore some options, back down, Cujo.

Aren’t all threads technically open to asking about? If you see a thread you can dm someone and ask to join. If the writer has a specific story they usually make an OOC thread to track and lay out specifics.

Aren’t letters just IC threads that are a letter instead of a story or action?

I am just not sure what this adds to the community. It seems like things we already have. I’m not against it if it helps people get involved and have fun though. I don’t think it’s needed but I also don’t think it would hurt anything.

Ah. I see. I think we have different bars set for success. Posts and activity. Got cha'. It all makes sense now. And yeah, if that's your goal? Then nah. This suggestion won't move your needle much.

I'm more of a 'convenience' guy myself. Which, is honestly what I thought the OP was pitching. Convenience. Less LFGs. Less work for us little guys. That sorta thing. In fact, you said it best when you recognized we already do this kinda thing just, with more steps along the way.

But hey. You do you man. I just saw something obviously truthful in the OP and thought slapping a label on it would be an easy win-win. No biggie.

oh.

btw.
