To Write a Faction

Since I've joined Chaos I've always had an interest in that wild faction-game going on throughout the site, but, once I started getting to work on jumping in I realized just how lost I truly was on making something that could be half successful. And I would adore some advice from those more seasoned members of the board on the topic,

I've been working under the assumption that the whole thing works around the concept of "have something good to pitch" as well as "good recruiting", is this accurate? Or was there some misinterpretations?

The two things you mentioned are indeed important, but I would emphasize have a group of writing partners you regularly write with and bounce ideas off with. This will make the core of the faction, and make good pitches and recruiting easier. You don't need many - two other people would be great to start with.

Another one you can do, is that the faction is open to ideas. Let your people come up with threads within the faction. The more they are invested into the story, the longer people will stay.

I think what's crucial is having a faction narrative and a direction. Not just about the past - you don't want a crystallised thing that you present people on a platter and tell them "do with it whatever you want". You need to have a compelling idea of where this is supposed to be going. That gives people direction and focuses their energy and makes stuff happen. Not to stifle their own creativity and smother them, of course - but to give them building blocks to work with.

This is all good stuff, and you need to keep it in mind and take it to heart. The only thing I would add is you need to be able to lead. The best idea in the world is useless if you can't get people motivated, keep them motivated, and provide direction. If you can't do that, you're dead before you ever get started.
