Intent: To build Lucerne Labs refined version of the plasma energy torpedo
Development Thread: N/A
Manufacturer: Lucerne Labs
Model: Torrent-class Plasma Energy Torpedo
Affiliation: Directorate, Closed Market
Modularity: No
Production: Mass-Produced.
Material: Trimantium casing, servo-motors, various electronics
Classification: Shieldbuster energy torpedo
Size: Ship-Mounted
Length: 2 meters
Weight: 10 Tons
Ammunition Type: Power
Ammunition Capacity: Dependent on host vessel
Effective Range: Long-range Capital Ship.
Rate of Fire: Variable (typically 2 torpedoes a minute)
Special Features:
-Counts as 4 guns (2 turbolasers) for starship building purposes
-Turreted
Strengths:
Shieldbuster: The Torrent, like other shieldbuster weapons, uses an intense radiation burst which is especially effective against shields, being roughly 1.5x more effective against shields than a standard warhead its size.
Long Range: Like canon energy torpedoes, the Torrent has an exceptionally long range.
Variable Charge Time: Unlike previous iterations of the plasma energy torpedo, the Torrent has multiple firing rates, allowing it fire more rapidly than standard light energy torpedoes at the cost of reduced range and damage.
Weaknesses:
Poor Physical Damage: Because the Torrent is optimized to take down shields, it is not very good at damaging physical objects, dealing roughly half the damage of a normal warhead its size.
Unguided: Like canon energy torpedoes, the Torrent has no guidance system, which makes it less effective at hitting small and/or fast ships at range.
Poor Rapid Fire performance: The Torrent achieves higher rates of fire by generating and releasing smaller amounts of fusion plasma than standard light energy torpedo launchers. Consequently, the more rapid the fire, the less range and damage the torpedoes inflict.
Description: Then Admiral Quee became acquainted with the Plasma Energy Torpedo during his stint as a project director in the Republic Navy. Since the technology was owned by that government, Gir directed a team of Lucerne Labs engineers to come up with an improved version for their own use. They quickly found it was impossible to improve traditional weapon metrics such as power or range, but since they were not limited by government bureaucracy and policies, they were able to implement software protocol changes to the device. This allowed them to set several different plasma fill up times within the launcher. The lowest settings produce plasma torpedoes with little more power than a grenade and the range of starfighter-grade warheads, while at its highest setting, it delivered performance similar to traditional light energy torpedo launchers.
In practice, the Torrent is usually employed much like its Republic predecessor, occasionally tossing out torpedoes to try and damage enemy shields from a long range. Such torpedoes in flight are almost indistinguishable from either traditional energy torpedoes or the Republic's version except for a faint cyan tint as a result of the slightly different magnetic bottling technology employed by Lucerne Labs. The lower power settings are generally used when there are not capital ship targets present, where the sheer rate of fire might allow it to hit small and close by ships simply by rapidly filling up space with munitions.
