SPECIAL FEATURES
- The Shredder's main characteristic is its use of micro-explosive shards as ammunition instead of bullets.
- Purging Shards: The exploding shards used as the Shredder's ammunition mark the weapon as something capable of slaughtering unarmored and lightly-armored targets with ease, making it notably useful during boarding actions and other such operations where the enemy rearguard must be swiftly eliminated.
- Making A Point: Seeing a long-time comrade turned into a pincushion (and, moments later, a fine red mist) is devastating to morale, marking this as a weapon meant to spread terror in the enemy's ranks.
- No Penetration: Terrifying and spectacular as the Shredder may be, the weapon becomes nothing more than an over-complicated piece of junk when facing an armored enemy. With the explosive factor completely neutralized by infantry-grade body armor (such as Duraplast, widely-available choice across the galaxy) and the ammunition itself bouncing off harmlessly against more durable materials, the weapon is far from polyvalent.
- Up Close And Personal: The most glaring inconvenience when it comes to using the Shredder, as noted by some, is the slight spread - limiting the weapon's viability to short range, in spite of the projectile speed and overall accuracy.
When Jenn Kryze designed the Piercer, she quickly noticed the weapon's shortcomings. Six shots and a low rate of fire made it a marksman's idea of a heavy pistol meant for defeating armor, and so she needed to build a second weapon - one capable of utterly devastating unarmored foes at close range! Ever the enterprising soul, she poured her efforts into coming up with the Piercer's complete opposite, thus leading to the creation of the Shredder. Just as barbaric as its sidearm sister, its unique choice of ammunition makes for morbid results. The shatter gun expels its ammunittion as piercing shards, flying at high velocity in a straight line and embedding themselves into the target's flesh before detonating, causing extreme internal damage in the process. If eight or so of these shards are simultaneously embedded inside of a target in quick succession, a supercombine explosion will occur- often killing the target instantly in a shower of gore. However, in spite of the weapon's formidable performance against unarmored as well as lightly-armored targets, the deadly ammunition is easily turned aside by those wearing infantry-grade body armor or better: the shards outright bounce off of the more heavily-armored of targets, proving to be nothing more than a nuisance. The unique choice of ammunition results in a very slow and awkward reload as well, leaving the user exposed during a pitched firefight- but the recoil is practically nonexistant, making for accurate and sustained fire when needed.
As with its sister weapon, the Shredder is a brutal weapon favored by those who want to make a statement. The psychological impact of seeing an ally reduced to a fine red mist is undeniable.
