Strengths:
Modular: The Typhoon's hardpoint allows the ship to be customized for specific missions or tailored to individual pilots far more easily than most other starfighters.
WEAKNESSES
EMP Sensitive: The Typhoon uses some very sensitive electronics, especially its holographic HUD, that make it more susceptible than other starfighters to EMP and ion-based attacks.
Always a Tradeoff: While the Typhoon is exceptionally modular, all of its modules come with some sort of tradeoff or alternatively just make it equivalent to the average starfighter. Many starfighters dedicated to a certain task will outperform a Typhoon trying to compete with it by using a specialized module.
Description: The company's first starfighter, the Monsoon-class Starfighter, was not found to be as universally appealing as the marketing executives had hoped. Bureaucrats disliked its high rate of fuel expenditure while some pilots disliked its reliance on ordinance. Attempting to learn from the Monsoon's shortcomings, the Lucerne Labs design team began to work on more efficient airframe for a new starfighter, choosing to roughly follow the lines of the NovaSword, a little known starfighter with exceptional flight performance.
The resulting starfighter, dubbed the Typhoon, was found to have highly responsive handling characteristics and a decent flight performance. In effort to make it more appealing to established pilots and military institutions, its controls closely mimic those of the X-wing and several popular civilian airspeeders. When it was married to a basic Sublight Acceleration Motor, the Typhoon became one of the fastest starfighter designs available. Combined with an intuitive overlay holographic HUD and an excellent vision from an expansive ceraglass canopy, the Typhoon became appealing to many pilots, though Lucerne Labs was not sure if they would be able to successfully market it to the many bureaucrats that would be purchasing the craft. In an attempt to make it more appealing to them, Lucerne engineers took the space typically reserved for warhead launchers on the ventral side of the craft and made them a pair of hardpoints. Each is capable of taking one of the following modules:
- Warhead Launcher: This module contains a pair of LLT-7 General Purpose Warhead Launchers, which allows the Typhoon to carry a variety of starfighter-grade ordinance. It is probably the most common module used by military Typhoons.
- Mini-Missile Launchers: This module contains a quartet of PLX-2M missile launchers. These light weapons are typically used to attack ground targets (with bunker-busters, anti-vehicle shells, and gas delivery warheads) and small aerial vehicles like airspeeders or swarm fighters (GAM guided missiles or 3t3 missiles). While these warheads are relatively smaller and weaker compared to conventional starship munitions, some pilots use the sheer numbers of these lighter warheads to compensate for their relatively light power.
Autocannon:This module contains a pair of Seure-class cannons and ammunition. This module is typically used as an armor penetrating weapon against vehicles and small starships.(Discontinued; no longer in service - replaced in general use by Reaper Mag Cannon Module)- Reaper Mag Cannon Module (New as of 858 ABY): This module contains a pair of Reaper Mag Cannons, providing the Typhoon with exceptional kinetic gun power for a ship its size
- Ion Cannons: This module contains a pair of f-9 heavy ion cannons, typically used to disable enemy starships and technlogies.
- Cargo Space: This module is a simple cargo container that fits flush with the Typhoon's hull, capable of carrying up to four metric tons of cargo. This module is typically used for couriers transporting small numbers of valuable items or by blockade runners.
- Fuel Tank: This module supplies extra fuel for the starfighter's engines, allowing it travel greater distances than many of its competitors. Each pod provides enough fuel for 4000 light-years of hyperspace travel.
- Sensor Decoy Launches: This module contains two sensor decoy launchers loaded with six Mimic Sensor Decoys.
- Enhanced Sensors: Contains a high resolution EPR equipped with a recorder for close-range reconnaissance flights and a PN-4 sensor component to enhance the range of the Typhoon's standard sensors. This package is typically used to turn Typhoon into a tactical scout, though its sensor capabilities pale in comparison to the sensor packages carried by dedicated scout ships.
- Fire Control Support: This module contains a MCS Tetra-class Targeting/Tracking system, allowing it to provide supplementary fire control to other units, especially during jamming, like the old TIE Fighter/Fire Control variant.
- Shield Module (New as of 858 ABY): This module contains an additional shield generator and power source, giving the Typhoon two layers of shielding.
- Hyperdrive Booster Module (New as of 858 ABY): This module contains a copy of the HD 5-D Booster, which allows the Typhoon to obtain a x0.5 hyperdrive speed, making it exceptionally fast. Often used by individuals using the Typhoon as more of a personal transport rather than a true fighter.
- Enhanced Maneuvering Package (New as of 858 ABY): This module contains several banks of N2-f microthrusters, which enhances the maneuverability of the Typhoon.
- Thruster Booster (New as of 858 ABY): This module contains a three Dual Stream DS-001 thruster components, which take in stray radiation particles and use that energy to consistently boost the Typhoon's speed.
With these options, the Labs hopes to lure buyers with the adaptability of the Typhoon's platform. Rather than buying a simple starfighter, customers are buying a starfighter that can easily be adapted to different roles as needed. This potentially saves customers credits as rather than buying specific starships to fit niche roles, they simply have to buy the right modules for their Typhoons. This philosophy has had other unintended effects though as it appeals to buyers other than governmental bureaucrats. Perhaps the most high-profile example is the Typhoon that took 2nd place in the most recent Dragon Void Run. Despite its relatively high profile in the civilian racing market, it remains to be seen if the Typhoon will gather as much popularity as a military starship.
Update 858 ABY
Typhoons in service for years started experiencing random engagements of their SLAM systems, leading to several accidents but thankfully no fatalities. Consequently, all Typhoons were recalled and grounded until the source of this malfunction was determined to be a software patch update meant to allow new modules to be used in conjunction with a large amount of wear found on existing SLAM systems from overuse. Lucerne Labs removed the ship's SLAM system to prevent reoccurences of this issue, but in order to sweeten this safety recall, all Typhoons received several upgrades, including the replacement of the ship's durasteel armor with Argentum series Matrix Armor, a MAST on its ventral side, and the ship's old electronic suite was replaced with more rugged and self-healing Calor-series Bio-Computers and Biolux Bio-organoform Circuitry. In addition, several of the ship's older modules were phased out and replaced with newer modules, including several new engine-specific ones meant to help console users who liked to use the ship's SLAM feature. All newly produced Typhoons have had the same set of upgrades, making fleets of the Typhoons across the galaxy uniform in both parts and performance.
Updates: 4/3/2020
-Production changed from "Minor" to "Mass" in order to fit new production/affiliation parameters
-Armor material changed from durasteel to Argentum series Matrix Armor in order to match new production value
-Ratings & template altered to meet current factory standards
-Broken links fixed from board change
-The modules section had to be heavily reworked to fit the current system (the original sub predates the use of overall ratings for all aspects of the sub). The basic module concepts have remained the same; several modules had been added with the "New as of 858 ABY" to differentiate them from the older modules. Several of the older modules had their descriptions slightly altered to either meet the standards of this new rating system or to note that instead of two modular hardpoints, there is only one modular hardpoint now).
-SLAM drive removed
-Additional "Update 858 ABY" description to in-character rationalize changes in sub
