COMBAT INFORMATION
Availability: Rare
Deployment: Mass
Strengths
Umbaran Vehicles: The IAT, the MHC, and the Umbaran hovertank are native Umbaran vehicles that are technologically advanced and made available to the UFARB as well as their starfighters, providing a technological edge and significant variety in what can be done on the battlefield.
Nighttime Operations: Thanks to the natural darkness of their planet the UFARB are trained extensively in nighttime and low-light combat, and their equipment further assists in this. The UAI-1 armor and the bodysuit that comes with it eliminate the wearer’s heat signature, making them nearly invisible on thermal sensors.
Kinetic Weaponry: The primary equipment of the UFARB is kinetic in nature, primarily electrothermal, providing them with a significant advantage over enemies using armor primarily designed to protect from energy weapons such as blasters. While blaster weaponry is still included in their armament, they’re limited to specialized roles such as suppressive fire.
Weaknesses
Recruitment Limitations: The UFARB utilizes several vehicles native to Umbara, and their training includes extensive exposure to utilizing these vehicles. Every member is required to have trained on each vehicle, meaning that non-Umbarans are at a disadvantage if applying for the unit, as they recruit entirely from the Umbaran military, limiting their replacement troops. As a result there are never more than a few hundred available for deployment.
Force Users: The armor provides no protection from force powers, and has several areas that are lacking in serious coverage, making them exceptionally weak to lightsabers at the upper arm and the rear of the legs. In addition the duraplast and Krykna hide aspects of the armor don’t fully resist lightsabers, they can only protect from glancing blows and, in the thicker areas, only delay temporarily compromisation by the extremely powerful weapons.
Echani Shield Usage Issues: To counter the weakness of their armor to sonic weaponry each member has the option to utilize an Echani energy shield for missions, as they cover sonic and energy based weapons. These can be problematic however as it takes significant power to utilize the body-covering shields, especially as the shield produces a very noticeable energy signature, making the user highly visible to enemy sensors.
Aural Sensors: The primary weaponry of the UFARB is very loud, something that can be turned against them in combat if the enemy deploys aural sensors to track the source of fire back to the units position.
The UFARB came to be not long after the induction of the Umbara system into the protectorate of the Silver Jedi. Several high ranking politicians, at the behest of well-connected friends, agreed that the best hope for the Umbaran people in connection to their new allies would be to support them militarily, especially in the wake of several devastating attacks on neutral alliances in the Core. Under Amari Deechi a volunteer unit was put together to deploy alongside their allies under the control of the Antarian Rangers, utilizing Umbaran training and equipment alongside shared technology from their allies.
Their specialization as one might expect is nighttime warfare. Their home planet’s darkness proved a deathtrap for many during the Clone Wars, as the Umbarans took advantage to ambush the invading clones and make them fight for the system, and similar tactics are present in the UFARB’s training. Their armor works to eliminate the operator’s heat signature, making them effectively invisible to thermal sensors. In addition their primary weaponry is electrothermal in nature rather than plasma-based, making tracking the shots back to the source visually exceptionally difficult, though they are very loud, so audio sensors can easily detect the source.
Troops weren’t all that the Umbarans sent to work with the Rangers, however. Specialized heavy vehicles were also included such as the IAT, which in addition to being able to burrow underground and catch enemies by surprise is also ray shielded, and the Umbaran hovertank, which fires highly explosive bolts of electromagnetic plasma capable of wiping out vehicles and troops alike. Umbaran starfighters, while not a focus of the UFARB, were also included, and many in their ranks are trained in operating them, providing an extra range of lethality.
